GamesRadar: An Interview with Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii

One of the most well-known game developers in Japan, Yuji Horii created Dragon Quest all the way back in 1986, and has been in charge of the series ever since. With each new entry and rerelease selling millions of copies, it’s one of the most popular game franchises in the world, even if DQ’s international success is a fraction of its popularity in its native Japan.

GamesRadar got a rare chance to sit down with Horii at the Nintendo offices on the eve of the long-awaited US release of Dragon Quest VI.

A Star Wars game that does not have lootboxes littered all over it, Star Wars games get a new fresh breath of life, Star Wars as a game franchise will no longer be dragged in the dirt by EA, who better to make a Star Wars game then Lucas Arts Studios or Lucasfilm Studios. And in the long run this is probably cheaper for Disney to go another route with the game franchise I am sorry but EA buggered up Star Wars as a game franchise and I am not a big Star Wars fan.

I think you clicked on the wrong post.

jznrpg1233d ago

I’ve noticed that happening a lot today in particular. It’s happened to me once or twice . I assume some people are having issues with the site today

Nuvem1233d ago

Well, this is the last IP I thought would try to revolutionize NPC a.i.

Teflon021233d ago

They saw rimoru and thought, what if our slime were that smart 😂

Inverno1233d ago

AI needs to be a priority this gen for all games. We got graphics down, so optimization/AI needs more attention. Especially now with 100+ gig games

porkChop1233d ago

CPUs were the limiting factor regarding AI. The CPUs in the PS4/XBO weren't really an improvement over the previous gen, so progress halted on stuff like AI for the most part. This gen sees a huge jump in CPU capabilities, so we should see vastly superior AI in a couple years.

I really dislike the Dragon Quest games now. I used to enjoy them back in the Squaresoft days, and even shortly after their demise...but now these games just DRAG DRAG DRAG. The world of Dragon Quest 11 was lush and beautiful, but it felt so DEAD. NPCs are boring, everything was too easy, needs more action and dynamics like Final Fantasy 7 remake...this old style RPG was just too slow paced for me.

Can’t wait. In the mean time can we get remaster collection of all the Dragon Quest games?

3-4-51610d ago

4,5,6 Switch Collection? DS versions upgraded.

jaymacx1609d ago

Yeah plus I would like 7,8,9 ... it’s probably too late too bring 10 over due to it’s online gameplay

JBryant06191610d ago

They should take a page out of Capcom's book and do a couple of Legacy Collections.

FallenAngel19841610d ago

One does not simply make collections of RPGs

Segata1610d ago

They literally just did that with the first 3 DQ games on cart for Switch. They also did it on Wii.

FallenAngel19841610d ago

That’s not a collection that’s 3 individual rereleases

Segata1610d ago

No dude I said on cart. As in cartridge. https://www.play-asia.com/d... you can buy it now and play it in English. Something similar was done on Wii. A bunch of old games on disc.

Positivelypositive 1610d ago (Edited 1610d ago )

Isn't pretty common for a long gap between games with DQ? I just hope its not another mmo or builders 3. Main stream standard turn based main series DQ is 1000% better. I want new DQ now! lol.

lol a Movie... dude, FF spirits within is laughing at you. Ratchet and Clank is laughing. Gamers like to play games and only watch them on youtube lol.

IX was a disappointment after VIII I get they like to be different but the story telling style and no real party or main character that is a real main character.

I am all for NEW ips so hopefully we get something new and awesome.

Segata1610d ago

Depends. DQIX and X were small gaps but X to XI was several years. VIII to IX wasn't very long. VII to VIII was about 4 years.

Bleucrunch1610d ago

(Don't yell at me)....I have never played a Dragon Quest, which is odd seeing as how RPG's are my 1st genre of choice. I have XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for PS4 so that will be my first time into that world. Wish me luck folks.

Are their any hints and tips to know before entering that world? It would be appreciated/

Segata1610d ago

If you have a Switch. Play it there. The extra content and fixing the music really took the game to another level.

TheGamez1001610d ago

More heroes and builders games are much welcomed.

ZeekQuattro1610d ago

Indeed. I like both of those spin offs.

Cool. Really hoping they'll announce releasing the Japanese voices for the PS4 release as well. If not, I'll probably buy it on Switch.

gangsta_red1974d ago

Didn't mind the English voices too much but cringed hard every time Sylvando opened his mouth.

bluefox7551975d ago

Cool, after DQ11, I'm now a fan.

jaymacx1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Welcome to the club lol. I’ve been a fan since DQ8 (ps2). Then I played the older titles once they were remade fror DS (4,5,6,9) then DQ7 on ps1. I still haven’t played the first 3 games and 10.

The 10th Rider1974d ago

The phone versions of the first three games are pretty good. Obviously the games themselves are a bit dated, but if you're looking to play through them that's probably the best way to do it. They're not too expensive either.

LG_Fox_Brazil1974d ago

I highly recommend the first three games. They may look dated, but are masterpieces. Truly a work of art for it's time.

Lingonbak1974d ago

I actually ranked the dragon quest games recently in a blog.

1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
2. Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation
3. Dragon Quest V: Hands of the Heavenly Bride
4. Dragon Quest Builders
5. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
6. Dragon Quest: Joker 3
7. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
8. Dragon Quest: Joker 2
9. Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below
10. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
11. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
12. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
13. Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line
14. Dragon Quest
15. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of The Chosen

Lingonbak1974d ago

I really want some of the 3ds games to be localised. Like Joker 3, Slime Mori Mori 3, Terrys Wonderland, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest etc. I would also like to see the rumoured singleplayer version of Dragon Quest X

King_Noctis1974d ago

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest? That is the first time I ever heard of one. I thought only the Final Fantasy series have one.
