What If The Fight Night Roster Reflected The Sorry State Of Boxing Today?

Boxing isn’t what is used to be. Once upon a time household names like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis ruled the sport. Masses watched the big title bout. Everybody was excited to see the next major slugfest.

Today...not so much.

With that said, is it really a surprise that EA has loaded old legends in its new game Fight Night

Very true.
and quite honestly.. I enjoy the boxer specific ‘boxer style’ enhancement associated with the new title. The story mode looks very interesting as well.

On topic (and this is hard to say..) Boxing is on life support. With the absence of a unified commission or structured/mandated scheduling coupled with onslaught of MMA... It looks like a slow death is on the horizon. And that is a shame among shames

MMA is definitely much better than today's boxing. In MMA you have heroic figures. After Pacman retires, boxing will be left without any outstanding personalities.

Quagmire4847d ago

I was born in the wrong decade to be honest. I love 80's movies, 80's music, and the Boxing of the 80's. I wish I couldve lived through wacthing all those fights happening, but you're right, it's a dying sport given the way of ninnny-prancer soccer, bromancing MMA, and fake-as-pamela's-tits wrestling.

Rugby has almost the same intensity as Boxing, but its unfortunately a team-based effort.

RayRay364846d ago

I also was born in the wrong decade. It was the 70's for me. Cheech and Chong, $15 a lid, and all the hallucinogens your mouth could fit. Yeah.... The 70's is where its at man.

boxing has a lot of up and coming talent that EA skipped over.

diggler4846d ago (Edited 4846d ago )

it's always funny how much the US people think the USA = the world.
boxing is still quite popular here in europe and the lost interest in the USA is clearly to blame on the fact, that in the last years no US boxer was competitive against the eastern boxers, like for example the klitschko brothers.

over here in middle europe nearly everybody knows the klitschkos.
there fighting style may not be as exciting as mike tyson's was, but keep in mind it's highly effective and they, both holding a doctorate, fight with brain.

the change to MMA to me looks like: we have no competitive fighters in the boxing world championship anymore, so let's make an own league with US fighters ... and it's more bloody too ;-)

no offense to my US friends, but keep in mind that the world is bigger than only the USA.
something that often is forgotten by the US media.

and EA sells many games over here in europe. most of them from the FIFA series, also a sport not popular in the USA.

NYC_Gamer4846d ago

the problem is these people aren't true boxing fans.they only follow mainstream fighters, europe has a lot of talent that could have been in Fight Night.

dc14846d ago (Edited 4846d ago )

I'm sure I didnt make my point as cleary as I should have. I'm sure both of you will acknowledge the steady decline of the sport over the past 30 years.

@NYC: Without questions there are up and comers however their notoriety was/is interlaced with the general relevance of the sport. In the 60, 70, 80 and early 90s folks followed the armature rankings with vigor: The Olympics was must see TV. Today there is hardly a mention unless pursued.

In addition (I know you see it in NY)... several local DC/Metropolitan area boxing centers have also taken an significant hit (Multiple closing) over the last 20 years.

I love the art/sport but general politics and management monopolies has significantly hampered the US market.

@diggler
I agree the US does not equal the World.
However.. US specific: The supply and demand theory is holding true. There has been a steady lack of demand for boxing outside of the major ‘known’ name fights.

I want it back ..trust me. I miss the days when sports talk was dominated by the big middle weight fight of the night before.

anyone saying that boxing is on life support needs their head checked...and stats checked..

boxing is still outselling MMA...period.

at a ridiculous amount..

i hate the band wagoneers who only love MMA and wear all the tap out sh!t because it's popular..

it's annoying...

i like mma..i personally know Rampage Jackson and some other fighters...good friends..and they themselves would tell you that mma still has a long way to go and is still not comparable to boxing as far as worldwide appeal goes..

NYC_Gamer4846d ago (Edited 4846d ago )

half of the so called MMA fans, only watch mainstream stuff like UFC and Strikeforce.and don't even know the other organizations exist.

RXL4846d ago

exactly...

and it would be like trying to compare football to soccer...

both are popular...obviously..but one is worldwide while the other only caters to the states...(im an American btw)

Baka-akaB4846d ago

funny thing is while they are gaining traction (though mostly in usa) most of those movement crumbles on there own .

how many time have been resurrected ufc , and others mma leagues ? and how many time have they respawned themselves with a new direction and name ?

Fight Night Round 5: We Want A New Fight Night Game

It’s been almost a decade since the critically acclaimed Fight Night Champion, the final title in a series of beloved boxing video games from Electronic Arts. Since 2011, the studio has been focused on its mixed martial arts title, UFC, instead. But with the rise of the popularity of boxing again, thanks to fighters like Floyd Mayweather and Tyson Fury, could we possibly have another Fight Night game on the way?

Undisputed looks like a ps3 game, cmon EA, stuff UFC, give the people what we really want which is a boxing game!!!

cnote00463d ago

Petebloodyonion463d ago

IT'SSSSSSSS FIIIIIIGHT NIIIIIIGHT!!!!
I hope they make it like round four instead of champions but ill take any fight night at this point

Dabigsiebowski463d ago

They need to go back to the good roots of FN R2 and FN R3. Everything after watered down the formula too much and enabled gimmicks. FNR2&3 are some of the greatest fighting games ever.

Kurt Russell462d ago

3 was fun and you could smash out so many haymakers. But I found 4 more technical and enjoyed it for that too.

navi87462d ago

At least in 3 you had to wind up your shots, it was more skill based as opposed to 4 where you just held down L1 or R1 whilst flicking the analogue stick.

navi87462d ago

Agreed, i played FNR 3 the most on Xbox 360 back in the day and using the analogue sticks to kinda mimic punches thrown was fun af. FNR 4 ruined it by just flicking the analogue stick to throw hooks, felt really unintuitive after the previous games.

isarai463d ago

They'd ruin it like they do everything these days
