Beta Impressions: Killzone 3

Gamer's Guide to Life.com, 6th February 2011: Lead Editor, Linford Butler, casts his critical eye over Guerrilla Games' latest, Killzone 3.

"A lone, mourning violin heralds your arrival into the world of Killzone 3. [...] It’s an oddly serious, sombre opening to the latest in a series renowned for its straight-up shooting and un-shying goriness. [..] Guerrilla’s baby has grown up into one of that very rare breed: a serious first-person shooter."

"Where Killzone 2 was a loud, egocentric teenager, flexing its not-quite-fully-developed virtual muscles with testosterone-fuelled bloodiness and shouting you down with a range of obscenities that even criminals on North London estates would struggle to recognise, its successor is a solemn, straight-faced adult, stoic and businesslike, getting on with whichever tasks are necessary with unfaltering professionalism."

Huh. Well put.

redsquad4860d ago

That's a bizarre analogy, yet I actually get what they mean... I guess that means it's well written.

PhilipLarkin4860d ago

Nice impressions - with Move it's awesome!

NecrumSlavery4860d ago

I love the Alpha Beta and this Open Beta. But I have not used Move with it yet. Every single person who has used it says it's the best Move experience around and gmaing with Move is flawless. What are your thoughts? I am excited to use Move with KZ3, and on the SOCOM4 Beta as well.

a_bro4860d ago

the implimentation of Move in this game is not a Gimmick. Its how every FPS game should follow now.

the fact that i do better dominating people on Move instead of DS3 is outstanding.

people thought that DS3 people was going to own Move people, but its the other way around.

SIX4860d ago

It's a good control scheme that doesn't feel tacked on. To me, it feels like a completely different game with the move. With that said, you really don't need it. Most people will always be content with a controller.

colonel1794860d ago

a_bro

What are the settings you used for Move? I played around with it a bit, but felt it too sensitive.. Am I doing something wrong?

a_bro4860d ago (Edited 4860d ago )

lower the sensitivity. i have mine at around 10% as for the dead zones, i have mine set at 20% (height and Width)

keep messing around with those settings until you feel comfortable with it. do it while playing on botzone, just so you can take it easy instead of getting killed by players online.

"the lovely interjecting cut-scenes in Operations mode"
Every time I'm in the cut-scenes I scream like a little girl...

redsquad4860d ago

I know - Seeing your own name over the character is a blast.

Raven_Nomad4860d ago

I had trouble connecting to the beta at all. It looked nice, but no prone ability and the controls felt off. Meh, maybe KZ just isn't for me.

holdmyown834860d ago

So agree with u..ive beeen able to log on once since ive had it

Fil1014860d ago

I love it loads more than I did kz2 multiplayer but when I cant connect online that pisses me off

the_best_player4860d ago

Guerrilla Games' Multiplayer Horizon Game Could Be Named "Hunters Gathering," Teases Leak

Guerrilla Games' upcoming multiplayer Horizon title could be dubbed "Hunters Gathering," according to a new leak.

Jin_Sakai160d ago (Edited 160d ago )

I wish PlayStation Studios would just stick to what they do best, making great single player games.

Outside_ofthe_Box160d ago

The core gameplay of Horizon is really good, so this is one of the few I can see working out. Also GG does have one of the greatest multiplayer games ever made in Killzone 2 under their belt so MP isn't too far off with what GG does best.

SyntheticForm160d ago

Hell, I enjoyed Shadowfall's MP thoroughly even though it had issues. Guerrilla have delivered solid multiplayer experiences.

Cacabunga159d ago

Oh boy. No idea why they don't want to work on a killzone it's a much more fun multi mode. -

__SteakDeck__159d ago

@Jin_Sakai First. As a business, you don’t just stick to what you do great. If that was the case, Apple would of just done computers and not taken a risk with iTunes and the iPhone. Also have you seen the cost of their AAA games like Spiderman 2? Sony is going to need one of these GAAS games to hit, or expect budget cuts to their SP games. We’re already seeing in the document leak, that they’re asking Insomniac to cut budgets.

Jin_Sakai159d ago

Their studios aren’t masters at GaaS and it’s showing. Naughty Dog wasted all that time and Resources just to cancel Factions and Insomniac's multiplayer Spider-Verse got axed. If Sony really wants a big GaaS hit their best bet would be to acquire EA or Epic Games. You need huge support to keep these games going with content and updates.

purple101160d ago (Edited 160d ago )

OHH GOD YES,, or at least some new shooter. finals was okay but I want more, spesh from 1st party

DaleCooper160d ago

Meh. You know what could be good? A new Killzone.

Magatsuhi160d ago

Hope it's not battle royale.

anast160d ago

It would be better than Monster Hunter, but I'm good with the Gaas stuff.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor385d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar385d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg385d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149384d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138385d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim385d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC385d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138385d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle385d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76385d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM384d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger384d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca385d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

potatoseal385d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright385d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
