OtherOS Another Step Closer on PS3

The FailOver group published an updated video of their Linux demonstration on the PS3 slim which fixes the video output problem. Since PS3's security was broken there are three groups who benefit the most; those interested in Linux, those interested in homebrew, and those interested in piracy. This is a great day for those in the Linux camp.

they just don't know when to leave things alone.

just_looken4841d ago

agree also its a very stupid risk majority of inux os's are free and easy to put on a pc yet they want to put linux on ps3 with a risk of jail time.

ComboBreaker4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

Hacker: "Dude, I spent 3 months hacking the PS3 and finally got Linux running on the PS3, but with many many bugs."

Friend: "Lame. I already got Linux on my PC. You have just wasted 3 months of your life."

Hacker: "But but but... It's so cool, because instead of using the full working version of Linux on the PC, I am an idiot and rather use a buggy version of Linux on the PS3, so I can get less work done."

Friend: "F*cking idiot."

HolyOrangeCows4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

"updated...which fixes the video output problem"
LOL! They can barely SEE what they have done so far!

Why just use Linux/Homebrew/etc on a PC? That would work too well. /s

Whether they admit it or not, this has nothing to do with "justice" or Homebrew. It's for E-peni and piracy.

Arksine4841d ago

Actually, this I don't have an issue with. If someone wants to turn their PS3 into a dedicated Cell Linux box then by all means do so. This doesn't allow Piracy or Game Hacking. If FailOverflow had just released this and not released the root key I'd be surprised if Sony had much to say about it.

Its the Custom PS3 firmware that is problematic.

Blooper624841d ago

This whole thing is just stupid. Sony was fine with other os. They weren't fine with it when they said they were able to access other parts of the PS3 from with in it. All the time I read articles about some emulator for snes etc.. and Sony didnt care. And really if they would of not had other os to begin with, the PS3 would still be unhackable or atleast not be at the level its at right now.

Pedobear Rocks4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

How about a big Fuck You.

\a great day for the linux camp\ oh bullshit...linux on PS3 is limited...if you were truly interested in linux you would be doing it on a fucking pc.

sleepy34841d ago

Why does it offend you if someone wants linux on their system as advertised they would have anyway?

Did these people break into your house, rape your mom, kill your dog, turn your mom over then go in for seconds? Why do you hate them so much?

karl4841d ago

it would be really funny if sony brings otherOS back just a few days before this guy could actually get it right

just_looken4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

idiot the other os was a addon not advertised as a feature sense only a handful of linux os were compatible and it was like a 98 pc because of ram issues aswell as a security issue its now gone. just use a fn pc or go 2 your local library

BISHOP-BRASIL4841d ago

@just_looken

Not true. PS3 OtherOS feature was the hability to run PPC self contained code.

Yes it included some PPC Linux distros, but it wasn't just limited to that. The ram was ok for basic PC applications, but indeed wasn't aimed for professional use unless we're talking about clusters (which only really need much of that CPU juice).

That said, it obviously wasn't intended just for it. You could make and run your very own Custom OS from the ground with all the homebrew you like and run it there, there wasn't a limitation to Unix code, people would be able to optimize for the memory available as much they could but to ensure people would not emulate consoles from there, GPU and half memory was blocked access from there...

The hard cold truth though is exactly what everyone here already get, the so called homebrew community wasn't even interested in try to make it's own homebrew dedicated OS or apps, they were just creating what would become security concerns indeed. FailOverLoosers now trying to make Linux work on PS3 is the most lame and pathetic excuse they could find... 'poor poor basement dwellers, just wanted OtherOS back...' Yeah right, and I'm pricess Diana.

Pedobear Rocks4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

As a matter of fact my mom was raped by some dude in a Red Hat so thanks for bringing that up.

The reason is it offensive it that this whole 'we want to be able to run linux' is complete and utter bullshit and the only reason for all this is for asshats to pirate games. homebrew my ass. These people are putting at risk billions of dollars that SONY invested in this tech and putting at risk thousands of dollars I've invested by creating an atmosphere where top end game developers will think twice before risking development.

ComboBreaker4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

It doesn't offend Pedo.

However...
Please consider the following...

Hacker: "Dude, I spent 3 months hacking the PS3 and finally got Linux running on the PS3, but with many many bugs."

Friend: "Lame. I already got Linux on my PC. You have just wasted 3 months of your life."

Hacker: "But but but... It's so cool, because instead of using the full working version of Linux on the PC, I am rather use a buggy version of Linux on the PS3, so I can get less work done."

Friend: "F*cking idiot."

Linux on a ps3 with full access to the hardware would own most pcs, sony are going after hackers but are going to find no one but little kids who dont know the meaning of the word hack.
I cant wait to get my otherOS back

Blaze9294841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

Own 'most' PCs? LOL with what ram? Pls go

ProGrasTiNation4841d ago

With access to the spus i wouldnt need any more ram

ComboBreaker4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

"Linux on a ps3 with full access to the hardware would own most pcs"

Just because the power is there doesn't mean hackers can harness it.

Just because hackers have full access to the hardware doesn't mean that they're somehow going to be magically be able to create something as amazing as Uncharted 2.

I mean, just look at it. All those third party studios with more resources and more skilled programmers can't even create a decent game on the PS3, so how are a bunch of hackers going to be able to do anything amazing on the PS3?

30 years and Linux hackers haven't done anything amazing on Linux. It ain't going to change anytime soon.

Pedobear Rocks4841d ago

So its ok for you to destroy billions of dollars of investment, destroy the enjoyment of millions of owners that could give a rats ass about linux so you can get off on running linux on a PS3? Screw off.

ProGrasTiNation4841d ago

I think youll find its sony who are destroying their own product, hackers built the ps3 security & hackers brought it down.lol
I want to learn how to code on the cell & ill be doing it now thanks to sony & their removal of a feature they promised they wouldnt touch,& it not linux, its the cell that will show the innovation 3rd party games companies dont have the money/or care to show us.Im a fan of games & will never pirate a good game or rob a dev of there money & if you cant see past piracy then your probably a sheep who cant think for themselfs!
