The Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the commercial pillars of the video game industry, with the last entry, 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, selling over 17 million units to date.
But the storied franchise was almost nipped in the bud, according to Gary Penn, who worked on DMA Design's original GTA, which released in the late 1990s.

Reminds me of the story of some ultra rich d-bag that had so much wine that he couldn't possibly drink it all so he had to sell like 10 million dollars worth of it. No one has earned that much wealth without exploiting others.
Thats not true.. there are ppl who for example discovered cure are super rich due patent..
A GTA movie will end like a fast and furious.. omg one of the worst movie series ever..
@Roarke The scientist that discoveres the cure doesn't become rich. The patent will belong to Lilly, Pfizer, Merck, or Roche.
The money made is then disseminated amongst the executive board members and administration teams who provide zero value to the company. The scientists will continue to be exploited receiving raises and bonuses that do not beat inflation.
Again exploiting others in order to become rich.

Which is fine, I would much rather all gaming companies just focus on making good games.
Good thing it didn't although I've never played it :), the first one I played was vice city on ps2 and since then I love the series even though most people complained about GTA IV
great series until GTA4. Jesus WTF happened with that game.
Thanks god it didn't... GTA 3 and San Andreas were my favourite of the series. GTA IV was a big disappointment.

Wow, amazing. So what started out as a huge mistake turned out to be the thing that made the game great. Amazing story.
I have fond memories of GTA 1, it evolved beautifully throughout the years.
