Interplay: Fallout 6 could be ours

EuroGamer: Interplay reckons it could end up developing the sixth Fallout game if Bethesda successfully prevents it from releasing Fallout Online.

Speaking exclusively to Eurogamer, Interplay president Eric Caen said his company was "ready to fight for years if necessary" in the high-profile legal battle with Bethesda over the future of the in-development post-apocalyptic MMO.

Fallout 6
lol
should we wait 10 to 15 years for this ?

After reading that, it just seems like Bethesda's saying they don't want Interplay stealing ideas, or taking things Bethesda created for their Fallout games. Interplay sold them what was left of Fallout, and only asked to be able to continue work on their MMO. But I think Bethesda is fighting because they never agreed for Interplay to be allowed to take and use Bethesda's ideas/materials created for their games for use in Interplay's MMO.

This seems far too complex for me, but as much as I felt the need to be on Interplay's side in the first chunk of the article, after reading that one line Bethesda stated, it's hard to look at Interplay as if they're the good guys.

Oh well, not like I really enjoyed Fallout games myself. I'm more or less just interested in it for the sake of a good debate.

Yeah, but part of Bethesda's complaint is that they only licenced the Fallout name, not the locations, characters, story, history or anything like that.

I think that's a pretty unreasonab request to licence the name, but not let you use, for example, a Pip-Boy or Deathclaw or VaultBoy or Caps or Vaults or anything Fallout related even though it's FAllOUT: THE MMO.

JoySticksFTW4852d ago (Edited 4852d ago )

"Bethesda had claimed it gave Interplay rights over the Fallout trademark and nothing else, meaning it had no right to use essential Fallout ingredients such as weapon art and game concepts, for example the Pip Boy and what's called the "World Bible"."

And that right there is what we call some bull.

As Pirate Thom said, that's a pretty unreasonable request.

Try making a Star Wars game without the Force, a Light Saber, or some form of Storm Trooper. Sure it could be done, but it would suck.

It seems that's what Bethesda is asking Interplay to do.

And by the way, I loved Fallout 3. Thinking about hitting gog.com to snatch up Fallout 1 & 2 on the cheap.

I just think it doesn't make sense to licence the Fallout name without granting access to the things that make up the Fallout world.

I think Bethesda should let Interplay release the MMO. Is it really worth it to potentially losing the IP over an MMO. MMO's are expensive to run and people who play Fallout like the single player experience might not be interested in the game.

SilverSlug4852d ago

I think so to, but Interplay squatted on the Fallout license while fans asked for years and years for Fallout 3. Bethesda took the rest, invested millions and brought it to new platforms. Now its a big IP.

Now Interplay wants a MMO game to make a ton of cash after someone else did all the hard work in getting the Fallout franchise where it is?>

Man In Black4851d ago

They were making Fallout 3 when most of the employees were laid off.

SilverSlug4851d ago

So they can't afford it? Cool. After Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, I don't want Interplay doing Fallout games.

Eiffel4852d ago

Let Interplay keep the MMO, Bethesda, don't lose the IP over this. You've done great with it so far. Keep it up.

Superted20074852d ago

I think Bethesda should not lose the IP or the MMO which I don't really want anyway. Bethesda should pay Interplay another "Fuck off" fee and Interplay should walk away. From what I have seen from the agreement the signed is that Interplay are only allowed use the the name for an MMO and not anything else from the Fallout Universe. Unfair? yes Is there a legal case here? They signed the contract so its there fault for not being more specific about what they wanted.

A walk away and don't bother us with this crap payment from Bethesda to Interplay is more than deserved here. Bethesda have done an amazing job with Fallout and Interplay's part in the Fallout world is done. Walk away.

Perkel4852d ago

" Bethesda have done an amazing job "

no. You should realy play F1 or F2.

Also Black isle made Fallout not Interplay, Interplay was only publisher

SilverSlug4852d ago

I agree, Fallout 2 is better than 3, but doesn't mean they did a 'bad job'. Fallout 3 is a great game for a franchise reboot.

Superted20074852d ago

I have played both Fallout 1 and 2 many times...There great games for there generation...but Bethesda have done the Fallout Universe perfect and I do not think that any other developer hired by Interplay will do near as good a job

socomnick4851d ago

Fallout 2 is so much better than any of the Bethesda fallouts wish black isle was still around.
