I agree with everything but 3D and the fact that it's a Sony product. We can take a look at DS and PSP and see that that didn't work so well right there. In terms of sales, i think 3DS will be a huge hit. To me the PSP2 sounds like it's going to be one hell of an expensive handheld. If Nintendo is shipping 3DS for about $300, I just don't see the PSP2 being any cheaper. If they can somehow manage to get sell it at $200 and with all those features, then it could easily beat 3DS. But like i said i don't see it being any cheaper.

if the 3DS is coming in at $300, i expect the PSP2 to initially sell for $400 which sounds ludicrous but it's gonna have some amazing features. it'll basically be a portable PS3. HDMI out + connectivity with the DS3 and ports of great franchises like KZ, GoW, and Uncharted will make it a hit in my book. i will wait for the second iteration of said device, though

For those who didn't know, they 3DS is being released at $250 USD.

Imo, Nintendo has the handheld market locked down for now. Things may change if Apple jumps on board. I think the PSP2 will do well as long as they don't go the PSPGo route. But, I just can't see the PSP2 beating the 3DS.

The only thing that will hurt Nintendo, is if all the rumors of 3D being harmful turn out to be true. Then Nintendo will have a major crisis on their hands.

The 3ds could be like the ipad. It has the big name backing and popularity of the other devices to basically sell itself. That doesnt mean it is "THE BEST".

iphone and ipad arent the best in their respected markets but they had the popularity to win over the crowd. There are other tablets and phones superior just as the psp2 will be superior technically to the 3ds.

Sony needs to be aggressive this time around if they want a bigger piece of the portable market.

@active...yeah that might seem cool but I dont know about you but projecting an image is the same as blowing it up and you lose clarity not to mention you wouldnt be able to use a wall. To many imperfections.

A portable screen, yeah but then you are carrying around to much stuff. It defeats the purpose of being portable and the best image anyway would be on the native screen. I have a go and one of those docking craddles. I like to plug it in to my tv and play using a regular controller sometimes but the best image quality is the psp screen itself.

The only thing I see the PSP2 being able to do without getting beaten so badly is to make the games both hard copy and downloadable. Anything else needed to stave off Nintendo's dominance is to either have 3D without glasses also, or....damn, I don't know what else.

Edit: If the PSP2 has a mini projector inside to shoot an image onto a flat surface while playing, then it would have a fighting chance. Damn, I need to be working for these companies. I hate letting my ideas get away for free, lol.

@darth, yeah, but some work around could be done. I mean, the projection doesn't even have to be all that large...32" maybe? I was just trying to put myself in Sony's shoes, with what its up against in the handheld realm and think of what could compete, feature wise, against the 3DS.

@Darthv72, I can't stand when people always argue that certain products are only popular because of "name brand." Well the product had to something right in the FIRST PLACE to even get that "name brand," so clearly Nintendo did something right. Same with Apple, they literally invented the entire mobile OS market as it exists today and everyone else is just copying, there's a reason for their success. Nintendo invented handheld gaming practically and they've always taken the right approach on comparison to competitors, who all just tried to focus on outperforming gameboys specs instead of focusing on cost and mobility. That's why Nintendo has always succeeded in handhelds. Well see how it works for them this time, but people like you are just so out of touch.

Nntendos "name brand" didn't save them from being overtaken in the console market when Sony blew them away with the Playstation. There's a reason for that too, because Nintendo made too many mistakes and Sony did too many things right.

So save your "name brand" bs. It's ignorant. Name brand isn't everything in the consumer electronics market. Products are. If you make a product that is highly appealing to the average consumer, then chances are they will want to buy it. Higher specs does not automatically make something a better PRODUCT as you seem to think.

3DS, 320x240, ok, 3D and $250? Are you serious? 3D is a nice gimmick. People - especially who have a DS - will run out in droved to get one, no doubt about it. Not for me. Most phones will be a better alternative for a quick on the go. What's left is DS specific exclusive which will carry the brand. But that's about it. What's with that damn low res? I mean, 640x400 or something, but that low? WTH.

Anyhow, I want to see what the PSP2 will deliver. Even that will be a challenge against current phones and tablets if it doesn't push the boundaries significantly above those. And yes, I mean PS3 like visuals on a small screen (960x540 - half 1080) with something like UC or KZ. Then it can be a success. Sony will sell raw power, that's their strong argument. DS will sell existing pimped content, as always (and expand a little into hardcore).

second...there are many factors in why somethings happen. Nintendo sticking with carts for the n64 vs cheaper higher capacity cd's like ps1 and saturn used.

Apple and leveraging the popularity of the ipod and itunes to create a phone. Which in turn sparked another popular device. As I said. It may be the mass market appeal but it isnt the best on the market.

A very large number of things need to happen in order for the PSP2 to beat 3DS, let alone "dominate" it. There are a few uncertainties this time around for the 3DS, so I'll be watching initial sales numbers for the 3DS very closely.

Better is all based on the user. Which for most people dictated by the games. If you like Zelda, Mario, and Metroid chances are your going to think the 3DS is better. If you like Sony titles chances are PSP2 will be better. But 3-D is good, being able to record and take pictures in 3-D is cool, and street + spot pass look interesting. So the 3DS could end up being better than the PSP2

I think it really depends on the price. Sony customer might be willing to pay the price since its marketed into the high end. $250 for a DS is quite steep, IMO. If the PSP2 is close, it can be a tight match. And it really depends on content. Mario and friends will sell. But hi def visuals on a handheld is what IMO holds the iphone (and smartphones) back to be serious contenders for now. Sony might widen that gap again.

If #5 is right, the systems price is going to kill it, and the games will look bad too compared to the 3DS (If games look like PS3 games they will be the price of PS3 games, $20 more than 3DS games). The PSP2 probably cant compete with the 3DS sales wise because Nintendo just has such a bond with the handheld community. But as far as quality wise the PSP2 can easily compete without any question. It will probably also offer 3D without glasses as well. And we all know how many 1st party studios Sony have.

The specs they are hearing about are simply outrageous. Some highlights:

* Forward- and backward-facing cameras.

The PSP2 COULD dominate...however history is NOT on the side with Sony on this for these 5 reasons...reasons others above also posted:

1) This story comes from a Playstation website for one thing, so even if Sony released a hand-held Atari 2600 with graphics and sound to match in 2011, Playstationshow.com would say it's the best.

2) Many said this with the PSP vs. the DS before and look how that turned out...

3) When has a hand held EVER sold more based on power and specs? For that matter...when has ANY console sold the best based on Power and Specs? Never.

4) Brand recognition for hand held gaming is ruled by Nintendo. Not Sony. Core or casual otherwise. It comes down to developer support. Now look below...

5) Nintendo for hand held gaming has the largest developer support. Period. And based on early previews of upcoming titles, Game developers are releasing more "core" titles for the 3DS than what the DS and GBA had before it.

Unless something drastic happens (and anything is possible folks) I doubt the PSP2 will dominant. We heard this before when the specs for the PSP were announced and then compared to the DS.

The kids demographic is just plain huge. I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen of handhelds turned out just like this one, with a 2-to-1ish ratio of 3DS to PSP2s, just because they cater to different crowds, and the crowds just aren't changing around like the hardware is. It's possible, however, that the tables could turn on the 3DS -- more because of competition with the DSi, though, than the PSP2.

The real challenge, for Nintendo, is to ensure they keep their kid demographics. The high price of the 3DS, and the health issues with the 3D, are both a little worrisome, because neither will weigh-in well in parents' buying decisions.

Contrary to popular belief, it was the low price, and built-in casing that sold the DS to the masses. The touchscreen is cool, but it wasn't the major selling point. The 3DS, in raising the price bar, is dangerously close to pricing itself out of range -- and attempting to compete for a demographic it wasn't really designed for (the PSP2 high-end demographic). The DSi may very well retain its command of the overall market, for even a couple more years after the 3DS release, until the 3DS can come down in price.

Fewer and fewer people want to play games "on the go" nowadays anyway. I have a PS3, why should I want either a PSP2 or a 3DS? The only way I would even consider buying a PSP2 would be if it could somehow connect to the PS3 in a meaningful way, like with the PS3 handling all the physics calculations and the PSP2 being the controller/screen or something like that.

4. Stylus aiming is more accurate than dual analogue. The 3Ds doesn't need a 2nd analogue stick because people can just use the touch screen.

3. The only point with some validity. But if anyone's been paying attention recently, the 3DS online is seriously leaps and bounds beyond what Nintendo has done. There's gonna be a hand-held Virtual Console and one friendcode to a system, and we'll be able to watch movies in 3D. Don't forget the StreetPass and all of those other features.

2. 3D screen? That wouldn't make it better, that would put it on equal ground with it.

One things for sure, the PSP2 is much more desirable than the PSP. Just being the first major portable with dual sticks gets me very excited. I'll buy both of them this time.

Just need to know more information before deciding on which one to buy at launch and which one to wait for the 'lite' version.

I love the PSP but I don't think this will gonna happen. Nintendo still has the upper hands with titles that sells millions and millions. Like Pokemon, like Professor Layton, like Nintendogs,.... and endless Mario titles.

1. We already know that having the better console doesn't mean that it will sell more.

2. We also know that name branding is everything, and the DS is the iPhone of handhelds.

3. The DS still has Mario, Kirby, Pokemon(and other kid-friendly games) regardless of the pitiful battery life it has.

4. People will find out about the 3DS issues far too late as almost NO consumer does research before they buy. The low battery life will become an after-purchase complaint more so than a spec.

5. PSP IMO targets a different age demographic, game selection overall seems less "kiddie", but kids move product (see Bluray - having Disney early helped capture the next gen format).

Just my opinion.

five reasons PSP 2 will rock....
1.Sony has more first party studios which means psp 2 will have more exclusives to boot
2.Sony's psp 2 will offer game studios more room to produce higher quality games
3.Sony has more leverage in the electronic industry with partners which gives them more of a business edge
4.Sony has a larger budget which means better department funding for projects
5.Sony take more risks to offer us more diversity

If they want to make any genre they pretty much have anything covered...
