Bloomberg: Sony PSP2 to debut next week, PlayStation Phone at MWC

Engadget: It's nothing that runs counter to the ongoing whispers we've heard so far, but according to Bloomberg and its pair of sources, Sony Computer Entertainment's Tokyo event on January 27th is indeed the platform from which it'll unveil the next PSP, and next month at Mobile World Congress will be where we finally meet -- officially, that is -- the PlayStation Phone.

It's no coincidence that Sony is holding an event so close to Nintendo's 3DS unveiling. That leads me to believe Sony might be confident in showing off the PSP2 at this stage of the game. Also, with the PSP2 being so wrapped in secrecy compared to the leaks for the 3DS, seeing any news about it will be more shocking than the 3DS unveiling.

Christopher4874d ago

If they do, I'll be amazed. It will be the first piece of hardware this generation that wouldn't have been leaked months before its unveiling.

Cloudberry4874d ago

.
Aside from the previous VG247 PSP2 developers kit leak (?), I wonder what the final design would like.

+

Putting aside the future PSP2 price & 3DS price right now, I want to know what games would be available, English & Japanese.

Shikoro4874d ago

I just guess they will show the PSP2 soon as its design and specs have been finalized and they want to start building hype for the device.

If Sony put features in the PSP2 people want/expect from a handheld, it should be a real hit. They just have to match its price and features with the right launch games...

I'm excited for it and hope it turns out to be a great product. :)

Ju4874d ago (Edited 4874d ago )

I think the 3DS announcement was rushed. If true, 3DS and PSP2 will release very close to each other in fact.

I think Nintendo tried to steal some thunder from Sony. I don't recall Nintendo announcing a product that early. Normally they never show prototypes. We saw the final 3DS just a couple of weeks back (CES11).

Sony's announcement is sure to counter the 3DS, but I also think they must have reached a milestone to prep it for the market - not just a prototype.

silvacrest4873d ago

3ds is getting a release in late march which the rumours suggest the PSP2 will come in the winter although saying that, i hope it comes earlier

Ju4873d ago (Edited 4873d ago )

Still, both release for these years holiday season. Not sure if releasing a product in spring can create this big of a buzz. Maybe easter? Is that what the intention is?

Spinal4873d ago

No.... The Leaks came After the 3DS was announced and WoW'ed people at E3. All these leaks since then are just the device getting into its final stage. Its not the Same as Leaks of a device that aint even announced yet.

Show me an article with a leaked picture of the 3DS before it was announced in June E3 2010. You sir Fail.

Spinal4873d ago

Errr... what are you on about? the 3DS leaks are AFTER they already officially revealed the device in E3 2010. Unlike Sony who tend to have their products leaked left an right before they officially reveal them.

Ju4873d ago

We haven't seen the product since early this year. All those leaks where development HW (prototype PCBs with no case, etc). The announcement came after those leaks but this seemed rushed.

Stealth20k4874d ago

the 3ds is still going to crush it everywhere. Its called software

Ju4874d ago

Doubt it. UC-Portable, KZ-Portable and nobody cares about the 3DS (can't say UC-Mobile, now. LOL).

Spinal4873d ago (Edited 4873d ago )

Yeah like UC-Portable and KZ-portable will help the PSP 2 outsell Mario, Zelda (Ocarina of Time!) and Pokemon on the 3DS.

Don't be so flippin retarded lol

The software on the DS completely smash PSP software in sales Easily.

saint_john_paul_ii4873d ago (Edited 4873d ago )

but can it play 3rd person/1st person games with just one analog stick? i think i'll go with the PSP2 on that one...

liveActionLeveler4873d ago

Well, assuming your not the president of sony, no one can be 100% sure what the PSP2 will be like software and hardware wise.

theafroman4874d ago

im worry given the psp history i feel like its going to be another eh.
more powerful psp not enough it needs to do so much more.

Playstation Phone Hacked! PS1 Emulator Running

Tech savvy readers are well aware of the Sony Ericcson device and it's been a slow push getting the desirability to market mainly due to lack of content and games that would make it useful. Some folks have mentioned that having to re-purchase a PS1 title just to play it again on your phone doesn't seem fair. That's all about to change, at least for one hacker.

It's a Playstation, of course it was hacked

Nitrowolf24671d ago

It's running on Android, should anyone really be surprised with this?

Information Minister4670d ago

It's not just the fact that this is an Android phone. This is an Android phone with an unlocked bootloader!

And this is old news by the way: http://n4g.com/news/756091/... .

JerryMatters4670d ago

Actually this is a reply to Information Minister.. the old story was the original hack story. This is a new story about HOW it's just been hacked to play PS1 games, kind of a completely different story. In your eyes, if one writer ever writes, PS3 hacked, then if it was ever hacked 'again' that would also be old news.

Information Minister4670d ago

The Xperia Play has been able to play PS1 games from day 1, hacked or otherwise. There's no shortage of PS1 emulators for android. That IS old news.

If anything, the real news here is that someone has found a new way to play those games by hacking the built-in PS1 emulator on the device, which is what the title should have made clear in the first place.

gameguidedog4670d ago

It kinda needed it. Sony should just get smart and release an emulator with free roms anyway. Or cheaper to buy roms, like $.50 each.

limewax4670d ago (Edited 4670d ago )

Beneficial how? giving the PS3/PSP community the middle finger in favor of the mobile crowd. Or dropping all prices and losing a lot of money

Edit: Also a PS1 game packs more value than an Ipod app, So app prices shouldn't really apply, if anything it should have the same availability as PSN price and content wise, As far as its hardware can carry it

Kamikaze1354670d ago

Lossing money how? for 50 cents a game, a lot more people would buy them. This would more than cover any cost it took to get those games on the phone.

But yeah, it would be a huge middle finger to PSP and PS3 owners.

limewax4670d ago

You have a solid point there, sales would likely outweigh the loss in money, Only conflict I could actually imagine would be maybe PS plus users would see their weekly free game value decrease. It would be a very good idea though, If I could pick up PS1 titles at that price I would certainly have a larger PS1 library on my PS3

bacrec14670d ago

Somebody needs to hack my ps3 so i can play my damn ps2 games.

CrescentFang4670d ago

Too bad, Sony wants you to buy their rereleases (which I'm sure why they removed PS2 compatibility...)

frelyler4670d ago

Or you know, own a ps2.

kreate4670d ago

i think its more like ..

the developers/publishers wants u to re-buy their re-releases.

if u want backward compatibility.
sony offered one for 399 when the 20gb fat dropped in price.
but ppl didnt buy it. oh well.

Cpt_kitten4670d ago (Edited 4670d ago )

ps2 + component cables = enjoying your games

always been the better option vs the BC PS3's

@STK026

that sentece makes no sense what so ever, did you play them on the ps3 when they ps2 first came out? think before you speak

STK0264670d ago (Edited 4670d ago )

How is it the better option? I mean, is there any advantage to play PS2 games on the PS2 rather than on the 60GB/20GB launch PS3s?

Edit
I don't see how my sentence makes no sense. You said that playing PS2 games on the PS2 is a better than playing them on the PS3, and I asked how it was any better. You and I never mentioned when PS2 games were played; by the way you commented, I assumed you meant that still to this day PS2 games play better on the PS2, and asked you in which way.

You compare the PS2 to the BC PS3, and when asked how the PS2 is the better choice, you answer by saying that the PS3 wasn't released when most PS2 games were being released, which is true, but completely irrelevant to the matter at hand.

ThatArtGuy4670d ago (Edited 4670d ago )

The PS3 has upscaling abilities that the PS2 doesn't. So if you're playing on an HDTV, the BC PS3 is the better option.

ChiVoLok04670d ago

Not to mention being able to play on an official PlayStation wireless controler.
