Gamesradar: PS3 piracy - it begins. First hacked game shown running on unmodded PS3

Gamesradar: After last week's cracking of the PS3's master key, it was only a matter of time before the first full pirated game booted up on PS3. And... it has. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has been shown running off a hard drive, with the PS3 convinced it's a PSN game. GeoHot, the hacker responsible for publishing the key online, may well be 'totally against piracy', but the pirates in question are gleefully touting 'GeoHot's custom firmware' as their springboard. D'oh.

That is how all ps3 games should've been handled from the get go -- Sony should have given us the option to install our games to the hdd and run it from there. It's more convenient. It cuts down on laser eye wear. It makes the system work less. It's just a better means of play.

I wish Sony would release an official patch for this.

There's actually quite a bit of homebrew. Much of it was written right after the Jailbreak row. Now it is all being signed so that it can be installed via Geohot's custom firmware. The emulation angle has really taken off, as expected.

However, Pandora's box is opened. I knew that it wouldn't be long before someone found out how to wrap a ripped game with an installation package and get it running.

This really is sad news. This type of thing always ends up in piracy.

No, like on the 360, they would implement a check that refuses to run the files unless the disk is in the system. The only time the disk is actually read is to verify its the same game. If the disk is removed, the game stops playing but all the data is stored and read on the HDD.

I don't know. Sitting around waiting for a 25-50 gig game to install, to save on minuscule load times for most games. I also still have to put in the disk.

I never had the laser problem and this wouldn't help with YLOD, so I could care less either way!

@DaTruth - It's faster to install a full game to the HDD on the 360 than it is to download and install all needed patches on a PS3 game. Usually takes around 8-10 minutes, whereas Uncharted 2 took me more than two hours.

And the install decreases load times noticeably and makes games run smoother as well.

They already have mandatory installs that don't do anything. Why not have full installs as well?

Well the PS3 isn't too load and it doesn't have any scratch issues (not serious ones anyway) because Blu Ray is coated with an anti scratch anti finger print anti dust Durabis layer:

The only think it would help with is loading times and when they are too slow developers give us installs to speed them up anyway.

At the end of the day it is always going to take long to load a 30GB games like KZ2.

Sony will patch this, make a change and then the hackers will have to figures something else out. Pirates will play a few games but miss out on every single new feature, game and blu-ray released. Hardly worth it in my mind.

I don't know if I'm completely against this! I can never rent games because I can't put in enough time within the rental window! This would allow me to rent a game and get around to it whenever I can. I didn't even rent games until the "no more late fees" at Blockbuster, which is practically non-existent now(found that out when they charged me a late fee and then they tried to lie that the 2 week extra time was never two weeks).

It just always sucked that so many games got classified as a rental, but that effectively means I'll never play it! And I just never see deals on used games until they're 5 years old. $40 for a rental is a bit much!

From what I "researched", the PS3 won't require that much modding in comparison to the Wii(use a memory stick). Its the game themselves which will require to be hacked with PKG files which they then trick the PS3 into thinking they are PSN games.

It won't last for long however. Sony will be able to block this exploit soon enough but unfortunately hackers will more then likely slide by.

Geohot should be sued and jailed. He tried to cover his ass by saying " I don't condone piracy whatsoever" yet his exploit of showing custom "firmware" started the piracy on the right foot.

Sony will have to follow Microsoft directives, by actively bricking consoles if they dare go online. That might lead to future lawsuits, but Sony has been changing its Terms of Service since the whole Jailbrak dongle device showed up.

Lol, the developers aren't trying to recuperate the cost of burning the disk. They need money to cover the cost of all the development time. A developer should see money (albeit they never will)for used game sales, because the person playing the game used is getting the same experience as the guy who played it new. This experience is what the developer is getting paid for, not the physical 2 cent disk. And yes, to a developer/publisher, the used market is the same as piracy. Someone is getting to experience their game, and they are not getting compensated for their efforts.

People who get so upset over used game sales often refuse to look at how they also benefit developers. It isn't all stealing from them.

When people trade their old used games, many of them use the money to pay for the new games they buy. If they couldn't sell their old games then many people just wouldn't be able to buy new ones at full price.

It's a lot easier for some people to come up with half of the cash and a couple of used games than it is to come up with full price to buy a new game. In that scenario the developer still makes the sale.

Maybe if new games weren't as expensive developers would sell more of them and not have to worry about lower-priced used games cutting into their revenue stream. The mere fact that outfits like Gamestop thrive support this idea.

It's funny how so many people dog the PC because of it's piracy problem and swear up and down that PC gaming is dead because of Piracy. Nope alive and very well.

Piracy is an issue but not a death nail cause if that was true then the Wii should have been DEAD since day one as a PC emulator was running for it the second week it was out but it has sold more units than the 360 or PS3.

The 360 has been hacked for all it's life span except it's first year but Halo COD Gears and many other games have sold quite well. Now the PS3 seems to be hacked (I think Sony will fix this) but the PS3 will continue on it's path to dominance and have a long life span like the PS2 which by the way has a PC emulator and game hacks but still sells 10,000 units a month.

Piracy is a small cost of doing business, Windows 7 has a very nice hack but it didn't stop M$ from selling like 200 million licenses and basically printing their own money. Piracy, it happens but it's not the end of the world.

So all this talk about developers not wanting to make games for systems that can be pirated is CRAP cause if that were true then the video game industry would not exist.

Piracy doesn't = game over for the console industry. It's been around since the ZX Spectrum when people were copying cassette tapes...probably even further back than that.

As Krayzie said, its a part of doing business and it has been since day one.

One thing most people fail to take into account is these people who were waiting for the PS3 to be hacked probably never intended to buy most of the games they will be playing anyway! Either way you look at it the developer would never have seen money for that game.

If you look at the 360's hacking history, hackers will stop at nothing. A lot of them just hack for the fun of it. Sony cannot beat them, they can only slow them down and make life difficult for them. Unfortunately for Sony, the PS3 is going to lose a huge amount of software sales. Hardware sales will rise but won't offset the losses.

Who says they need to be downloaded? With the right application and access to a game disc, either through rental or borrowing, people can get as many games as they want for next to nothing.

The point is, you don't have to be able to download games to pirate them. All you need is access to a legitimate copy, the right tools, and the time to rip it.

In either case, it's wrong and people shouldn't do it. Just buy your games.

@turgore... I don't agree with piracy, however if you told someone who is fine with it... you have to wait a day to get this new game while it downloads and play it for free...or you can pay $60 and play it now.... I am pretty sure most will wait that day.

This is sad news for Sony and even more so for the gaming industry. All this will do is force us to deal with more DLC code / online pass items....and probably drive the cost of games up more.

Piracy has been around for around 15-20 years on consoles, don't be fooled into thinking this is going to destroy the console industry.

Saying it wont affect smaller developers would be naive, but just take a look at the xbox 360 as a prime example. It was hacked shortly after release yet its multi-platform games still outsold the PS3 equivilent...a console that hadn't been hacked at the time.

A lot of people who will be busy getting copied games never intended to buy them to begin with or would be buying them cheap, probably pre-owned and the developer sees no money from this. No one ever seems to take this into account.

@caseh... No I totally hear you. This certainly isnt going to kill the industry. However you are now probably going to see Sony 1st party games implement things like EA's online pass now for future games. Previously they didnt have to worry about that...now they will.

Its just one of those things that while not critical to success is enough of an issue to make a company like Sony waste time on it.

To be honest I would expect that of companies like EA anyway. The other day I went to pick up Battlefield 2 pre-owned, I was advised that I would have limited online access as I would need to purchase a new online key or something.

Suffice to say I didn't bother buying it and will most likely wait for a price drop on an un-used copy.

My only concern about the recent hack is Sony will start issuing firmware updates more frequently but to be honest around 90% of the firmware updates to date have been completely irrelevant for me so theres nothing new there lol.

It is always a cat and mouse game. For long Sony did not need to implement other anti-piracy techniques, now they will. There is lots of ways to do it. Check for a valid disk in the BR drive to confirm that you have a valid copy, writing between sectors to make it difficult to copy, etc etc etc.

This is not over and done with by a long shot. It just puts the PS3 on par with Wii, XB360 and PC for piracy. Maybe still a bit more difficult as not everyone has a BR writer yet.

Piracy won't kill any console. There is very few pirates who download their games compared to people who buy them. People who buy games far outnumber the people who pirates. Sure, devs will lose money, but not like everyone thinks.

It's not the end of the world people, the 360 and wii were hacked way before then and they're still going strong.
