Why Modern War FPS Games all Look the Same

As we've pointed out before, the makers of modern war FPS games are fresh out of ideas. To truly get a handle on the situation while making us all billionaires, we decided to try and figure out the formula they all appear to be following. It wasn't that hard, actually.

"its funny because it's true"

Russians are always the enemies...lol

now do one for Japanese RPG games:
*kids
*anime characters
*kat characters or robot

same sh*

-Ninja Gaiden 3- is sick!:)

This article is bullshit.

The only 2 FPSs that are somewhat similar are COD and Battlefield BC.

The difference between Killzone and Crysis or Halo and Resistance is massive. Actually it is one of the most diverse genres.

JPRGs and Beat em ups on the other hand.....

I'd say CoD and KZ have the most similarities from gameplay perspective. Neither REALLY have vehicles to drive and pretty much all you ever do is shoot each and every bad guy on your way with more or less the same guns. They also only have one type of enemies, (sans a very few exceptions ofc): Humans/Helghast.

Halo might be the most different of the bunch: It's sci-fi, it has a lot of vehicles to maneuver, all sorts of firepower at your arsenal, a ton of enemy types, a distinctive main character and it most definitely has the best story of them all! CoD is such a disgrace in that category... I mean, MW1's story is about killing some dude TWICE!! Thats pretty much it, ffs! :D

DoomeDx4880d ago

The article is talking about MODERN fps.

Resistance, Halo, Crysis, and killzone, do not take place on the modern age!

So you are wrong, the article is right
(cant belive you've got 4 agrees)

firefoxprime4880d ago

You'd be surprised how people will blindly follow falsifide information.

Fortunately you've got a good head on your shoulders Wesley.

aaaaaaaaa4880d ago

i agree with you about this article

i guess someone will bring out an article saying all drivng games are the same because all the cars have accelerators & breakes

jony_dols4880d ago

@ wesley-dw

Crysis is set 9 years from now, so it is a modern warfare game, with the same guns and vehicles as CODs or Battlefields. And that is one of the most diverse games ever made.

TheGameFoxJTV4880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

@jony_dols
Modern = Current. So if Crysis happens in 9 years. THATS THE FUTURE. It's not modern, it's futuristic.

"Modern = Current. So if Crysis happens in 9 years. THATS THE FUTURE. It's not modern, it's futuristic."

MW1 came out in 2007 but was set in 2011 so it must be a futuristic shooter too!

So lets analyze this article.
Why are all modern FPS games the same?

why are terrorists the enemy in every game?
Games are made in the western world, terrorism is the MODERN enemy in the western world
Why is there a snow level?
because snow combat is real, because in the MODERN world we now how the tech to make Arctic warfare efficient.
Why are there helicopters?
helicopters are the staple of MODERN militaries
Kill a main character?
People actually die in war, btw...

"Modern = Current. So if Crysis happens in 9 years. THATS THE FUTURE. It's not modern, it's futuristic. "

The article is clearly referring the real-world current warfare (within 10 years or whatever).

BUT Crysis is a sci-fi! It has futuristic nano-suits and aliens etc.

Stop being so pedantic about it. Crysis and Halo and Killzone are not the subject of this.

At the article:

There are only 2 highly rated modern war franchised, Call of Duty and Battlefield. Of course they're going to look the same, they have the same setting and so same weapons same uniforms, similar mechanics etc.

pointless article. If its not broken dont fix it what is this guy expecting? Of course theres gonna be helicopters they are for all used in actual war. and snowy levels add to the sense of realism a diverse environment.

IcarusOne4880d ago

It's not about being broken. It's about being uninspired. For me it comes down to style.

Jarhead and Black Hawk Down look nothing like each other. Hell, even Jarhead and Generation Kill are completely different while being about very similar wars.

But maybe this is a different discussion. I'm not necessarily looking for realism. I'm looking for a visual statement.

StarScream4Ever4880d ago

Need a new variety.

Like Chinese are the new Russians.
Playing as a different faction.
No US being invaded scenario.

arjman4880d ago

MW2? Russia invading the US?

Undeadwolfy4880d ago

They need to mix it up a little. Like some Britains invading Antarctica's penguins or something like that lol

kesvalk4879d ago (Edited 4879d ago )

@Undeadwolfy/StarScream4Ever:

i would too...

theafroman4880d ago

modern war shooters are the new WW2 games.

CaptainPunch4880d ago

What's with the disagrees?

EazyC4879d ago (Edited 4879d ago )

Stating that you're giving someone bubbles is a little bit... Chintzy. You should just do it, don't bother stating it.
eg.
"Bubbles for you, sir"
"That deserves some bubbles"
"You get bubbles, well said"

DasBunker4880d ago

we need a new call of duty: quest to find a duty

with this economy landing a job and getting trough the week on an average paycheck is harder than war... but it will probably be n00b friendly like getting a job on your first try having a mediocre resume.
