Microsoft’s Hand-held Rumor Just a Myth?

Where the heck is Microsoft's hand-held? The PSP and the DS are riding the wave into next-gen and leaving MS in the dust.

they may wait until the middle of the gen to see what consumers want

innovation - 3ds
raw power and multimedia capabilities - psp2

TheLeprachaun4862d ago

Microsoft are going a different direction with mobile gaming. They're concentrating on supporting xbox live on Windows Phone 7 as opposed to a full fledged handheld console. Don't hold your breath for one.

darthv724862d ago

some day. MS is obviously watching how these trends get released.

Looking at handheld trends from before it was usually 2 sometimes 3 console gens in before a company would release a handheld. Not sure if this was to make sure the hardware would be equal if not better than the previous console release.

PSP is better than a ps1 and came out during the run up to the ps3. Game gear is equal to a master system and came out after genesis. The only one I can think of that had a handheld coincide with the same console specs would be the turboexpress. That is because it played the same games on the go as it did at home.

blumatt4862d ago

I hope that the PSP2 can at least play PS2 Classics, which would also require that it have dual analogs and ALL FOUR shoulder buttons too. But, and I say but, it would be very cool if it could play certain PS3 titles, like sports games. So, you're playing NBA 2K 12 on your PS3 and then you take your game on the go and play it on the PSP2. Now THAT would be taking handhelds to a whole new level! I'd buy one for damn sure, then.

MariaHelFutura4862d ago

MS doesn`t have enough internal studios to have a home console and a handheld.

Sarcasm4862d ago

They're probably working out overheating issues.

I kid I kid.

On topic, I hope MS doesn't release a handheld, that would just split up their millions and millions of dollars and resources for the Xbox 360.

saladthieves4862d ago

I think Microsoft's answer to the handheld market of games are their Windows Phone 7. The fact that their Xbox Live service is already present on these phones means that this is their response to the handheld console.

HolyOrangeCows4862d ago

They don't need their attention divided. Look at what they have planned for us this year......yeaaaaaah....

If you divided their attention any further...I don't even know. Their entertainment/Xbox division is already a bit...inattentive.

and microsofts phone is failing hard. They have no idea what to do in the face of nintendo

TheLeprachaun4862d ago

Microsoft don't have a 'phone'. They have a mobile OS, WIndows Phone 7, and it's not failing hard. It's doing quite well considering how long it's been on the market. It's already miles ahead of iOS (not in sales, I mean the OS quality itself) and in my opinion, on par with Android. It's got the best UI of the lot and the only thing holding it back is lack of some features and a smaller app catalogue, things which will come in time.

darthv724862d ago

stealth is thinking of that kin thing which failed. Anyways, the OS is pretty solid. I would gladly trade in my samsung impression for the samsung focus (WP7) or captivate (droid).

I used to want an iphone back when they first came out. Then everyone got one and it wasnt a big deal anymore. Droid and WP7 are the new things to get. iPhone....not so much.

TheLeprachaun4862d ago (Edited 4862d ago )

Maybe he's thinking of the Kin, but that was scrapped so it doesn't really make sense for it to be 'failing hard' hehe. The Kin was a piece of shit though.

Agreed on the iphone point as well. Their OS is just a grid of apps....the only thing it's going for it is the massive app dev support. Without that, their OS is nothing.

Android and WP7 are far superior.

GfxPipeline4862d ago

Windows Phone 7 is garbage that no one but a tiny number of hardcore Microsoft fanboys were dumb enough to buy.

The only positive for Microsoft latest failure in the cellphone market is they can say at least it didn't fail as badly as the Kin.

It's dead. Get over it.

Baka-akaB4862d ago (Edited 4862d ago )

MS indeed had the kin , wich crashed and burned .

And right now the numbers are quite low for win 7 phones . 1.5 million in the first six weeks .

it took longer for android , but on a far less wide selection of devices and carrier (as opposed to 10 devices on 60 carriers in 30 different countries).

And since it's gained lots of traction

Even Microsoft’s Director of Windows Phone Program Management , Joe Belfiore isnt confident w7 phones will catch up android and ios phones anytime soon .

Edit :

Cool someone is such a fanboy he is disagreeing with "microsoft" itself :p .

SuperLupe4862d ago

Bah the xbox is finnaly a hit for them after a lot of hard work, spending and spot on tactical decisions. Not sure they want to try the adventure again with a handheld version any time soon.

GfxPipeline4862d ago

LOL...

Did you actually just try to describe the Xbox 360 as a 'hit'...

The console that is in last place in worldwide installed base and dead everywhere but the US and the UK...

Jazz41084862d ago

GfxPipeline, Thanks for commenting your fanboy hate twice as I got to rape you for bubbles twice.

SuperLupe4862d ago

You're talking BS.

And even if it was true, the USA with 330 million inhabitants counts more in the gaming industry than the whole of Europe with 450 million inhabitants.

And if you just take the UK alone its the 2nd biggest market in the world AHEAD of Japan.

Im sure there's wore than being in MS's position right now :)

Arup024862d ago

I hope it's a myth. I want all the MS attention focused on the Xbox 360

silvacrest4862d ago

MS attention is just on kinect right now and since its seems to be a success i dont see them changing that anytime soon

OC_MurphysLaw4862d ago (Edited 4862d ago )

MS wont be going handheld... that rumor probably was born from Microsofts phone initiative. Window Phone 7 is their handheld device. They set a min. standard all need to meet when making a phone to use for their OS. This is MS's strength and honestly the best move they could have made. Handheld devices pale in comparison to phone sales... MS will continue to grow their Windows Phones through companies like Samsung and LG...

Strict handheld gaming devices will be a dinosaurs in a matter of a few years.

Former Microsoft CEO talks company's hardware and how Xbox One fits in

With the breadth of hardware Microsoft is now seeing in their portfolio, what's a part of the future and what isn't is becoming more and more clear.

It's been forever since Microsoft revealed the hardware numbers of Xbox One. You'd think Microsoft would be more than proud to tout their fastest selling console's sales numbers.

Skate-AK3100d ago

We all know why they aren't posting numbers. Because they are losing, not that that's a reason to not post numbers. Last gen we heard monthly about sales for 5+ years. Now they won't even post numbers. Only one thing has changed since then and that is their placement in the console race.

UserNameIsNotTaken3100d ago

Yup. It's pretty low if they aren't revealing numbers against the ps4.

Lennoxb633100d ago

Even though the X1 is doing better than 360, it looks bad compared to the PS4's success.

It's like McDonalds versus Burger King. Burger King is in no way doing bad. But McDonalds is dwarfing it in sales and profit.

kotaku773100d ago

You are right! Never though of it like that... they should be proud, but they're not.

BG115793100d ago

A console is there to play games. This is the best strategy for a console. I never understand when CEOs or Ex-CEOs come in public to explain why someone should buy their console...

FallenAngel19843100d ago

@ Skate

There has never been a generation where Microsoft had the #1 selling console for a generation, this situation is no different. In past generations they always touted their hardware numbers despite not being in the lead, and it should be no different here.

@ phatak

The Xbox division of Microsoft already tried their hand in the mobile market with the Zune, and it ultimately failed horribly. It should be no wonder why they didn't go further and make a dedicated handheld platform.

phatak3100d ago

I wonder if microsoft ever thought about entering the portable gaming market with the surface pro as it is such a powerful device. They could at least test the waters with it as opposed to a full blown gaming handheld

Christopher3100d ago

If it had a battery suited towards that, I'd go with it.

I plan to get one eventually just for classic gaming. Most of the games will be turn-based stuff, so no need for a mouse. And... touch screen with a great pen... can't wait.

ScorpiusX3100d ago

This Man may of had some crazy antics at expos show or what have you , but the one thing that I will always admire him for is how he saved Xbox From RROD and did so without hesitation . Will miss he antic at shows .

Gates and Ballmer will retain their positions on the board. Mullaly is too old and Elop wont happen.

Ballmer’s Exit Could Bring More Changes to Xbox One

Game Front: "What does Ballmer’s exit mean for Xbox? Between July’s 'One Microsoft' restructuring and a new CEO, it means that the Xbox One you know now is probably going to look pretty different from the version you’ll know in a year. Three months of backpedalling on destructive policies is likely just the tip of the iceberg of change for the already-floundering new console."

Yet another doom & gloom end of days article on the end of Xbox. Please. Its getting old.

Elvfam5113892d ago

Welcome to the dark side lol

NeutralXP3892d ago

Only the lame post this and I guarantee it was MariaLfutura involved again the super wanna be Troll

P0werVR3892d ago (Edited 3892d ago )

Microsoft needs a Harbaugh like CEO to turn things around...well not implying that they're doing bad.

Just need a new outlook to be more dynamic.

Mystogan3892d ago

Ok this is getting old. We need to report these articles.

Deadpoolio3892d ago

Grow up and get over it quit acting like a baby the damn thing is floundering and it's not even out yet boo hoo

True_Samurai3892d ago

You're sounding quite like a child yourself

Nykamari3892d ago

Why? It was ok the whole gen for PS3, but the shoe is on the other foot and now it's bad! PLEASE! But I will say this, all the trolls against the Xbox are former Xbox loyalists. Don't believe me go thru my history and read the stuff they said about ps3, but apply it to what's being said about Xbox 1 now. Same trolls but on a different side.

4logpc3892d ago

This site just keeps posting crap lately.

WeAreLegion3892d ago

I really don't want the Xbox brand to end. I can't imagine any gamer does. I may be more of a PlayStation guy, but there are incredible franchises owned by Microsoft that may end up in the wrong hands if the Xbox division is shut down. On top of that, Sony and Nintendo need Microsoft. Sure, someone else might take their place, but the current battling between MS and Sony is absolutely fantastic for gamers! I can't remember two systems with launch lineups as strong as the XBO's and PS4's. This is great for the industry! We need this! Games are flying left and right...and we LOVE it!

theWB273892d ago

I try to spread that same sentiment around. Then get replies from people saying it would be best if Sony were dominant again and it'd be better if developers focused on one console.

I don't think people fully understand how much they're pushing each other to make better consoles and services for us. Who else would spend this money on this great hobby of ours.

I ride with Microsoft...but hope to get a playstation this next gen again. Here's to hoping they both stick around.

WeAreLegion3892d ago

Awesome! I'm glad there are some people out there who still love this industry. ;)

P0werVR3892d ago (Edited 3892d ago )

Just calm down, it's not going anywhere. It is about the most illogical thing that people can assume Microsoft is "selling" their Xbox division.

Get a grip of yourselves, we haven't come across anything of any relevancy that Microsoft is doing bad. If anything, we should hope that PS4 turns out great 10 fold because if not that is the end of Playstation.

The logic in these posts are amazingly ridiculous.

GreenRanger3892d ago

I feel for you, Ballmer. Constipation is no joke.
