Is 2D Gaming Better Than Ever?

GameInformer Dan Ryckert: "Like most gamers in their mid-20s, I grew up on a healthy diet of games like Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Donkey Kong Country. Those were the big-name classics that are first on everyone's mind when it comes to nostalgia, but the 8- and 16-bit era also played host to solid games like Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Contra, and plenty more. I would even spend copious amounts of time with platformers that probably weren't that great in retrospect, such as Boogerman and licensed games like Wayne's World or Ren and Stimpy. While I'll always have fond memories of the era, I started thinking recently that 2D gaming might be better now than it's ever been."

Super Meat Boy says "yes"

Dark_Charizard4882d ago (Edited 4882d ago )

Super Mario Bros, Battletoads, Super Mario Bros 3, The Legend of Zelda: ALttP, Super Metroid, Castlevania 3, Super Mario World, Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man 2, Contra, Symphony of the Night and Super Castlevania IV kick Super Meat Boy in the **** and say "Happy New Year"

Snatcher4881d ago

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the best games created. It's not a game, it's art.

Even with Battletoads and SMB3 we would get your point. Another great is Kirby's Adventure. I have never gotten to play Earthbound. I really want to get it.

The handhelds and the Wii especially have been getting some awesome 2D games, as well as XBLA and PSN.

But there are also hundreds of awesome 2D games on PC that people should try.

You can find loads of good ones on the DS, but let's not get carried away here. 2D shined it's brightest on the Super Nintendo IMO.

Smacktard4882d ago

Super Meat Boy IS great, but you just can't argue with what AGhostFromThePast said!

Ya know what is nice about 2D platformers though, when they are displayed in anamorphic widescreen and you can see the objects coming infront of you. O_O

These indie games can easily compete with 3 generations ago. Mainly by ripping them off, which makes 2D gaming better then ever IMO.

wii pisses on the competition for platformers.

i think nintendo predicted the wii was going to be a runaway success so called it the wii- ie pisses on the competition :)

"Better than ever" is kind of an iffy statement. The 8 and 16 bit era's were pure bliss for fans of 2D games.

That being said. The 2D format has made a very welcome resurgance. It's great to see.

Shok4881d ago

Thanks to the Wii, yes.

Honorable mentions include: Limbo, Super Meat Boy.

hassi944881d ago

2 games that aren't on the Wii?

I think XBLA and PSN as well as the resurgence is PC indie development has 10X the impact on 2D games as Wii.

Shok4881d ago

I do realize that there are plenty of platformers on XBL/PSN/PC, but retail releases hold more weight than downloadable ones. For instance, you'll hear somebody say "I want a 360 for Halo Reach" before you ever hear "I want a 360 for Limbo." Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby Epic Yarn, New Super Mario Bros Wii, (and maybe the 2D portions of Epic Mickey) are given more credit because they are [arguably] higher quality and full retail releases.

hassi944881d ago

I see your point. That's fair. I guess since I'm quite a knowledgeable gamer I don't consider people who are influenced by only the big advertised 2d games.

To be clear though, Steam does not restrict use of their platform in any country. So, to say that Sony delisted games in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and other similar regions is disingenuous. The taliban doesn't allow video games in Afghanistan.

There are many restrictions in many countries. Painting this as a false dichotomy of Sony or Valve ignores all other layers of what is going on.

Just be honest in your journalism about what countries are left out. Those countries should a) have internet access b) allow the game.

There's literally almost 170 countries and mentioned 3, and Taliban banned PUBG only, do you seriously think that these countries that had games all this time, suddenly decided to ban games when Sony wanted to put PSN as a restriction

anast11m ago

Sony would be stupid to let valve run the show. They would be bad at business if they did that.

i mean its pretty simple, they spent close to 30 billion in acquiring activision, they thought they'd make it bk no problem, and that didnt happen.

its just shit that because of MS's miscalculation alot of people lost their jobs.

Jingsing8m ago

This is exactly what many people said would happen including the CMA and FTC. Lies lies and more lies and they allowed a $69 billion buy out to happen.

gold_drake0m ago

oh yeh it was 70 billion. that was my bad haha even worse.

anast9m ago

They are going to use AI for a large portion of the game development process. Upper management need bonuses and the shareholders need more money. So, people will lose their jobs.
