OXCGN’s 2010 Game Of The Year Announced: Do you agree?

OXCGN:

"I won’t lie: this gaming year has been a difficult one for OXCGN’s staff. (Cue violins). It seems most of us have had a hard time balancing a lack of time, a lack of money, and a lack of interest in the current crop of gamer’s games.

The general lack of innovation and proliferation of sequels in hard-core games in a difficult economic climate has seen many of us often turn to alternative (and often cheaper) gaming experiences like on smartphones or XBLA and PSN. (okay, kill violins).

That’s not to say there haven’t been some real gems out this year. It mainly has meant that each of us has been more discerning in our console game purchase choices."

Also reader's poll on site.

Dark_Charizard4880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

Nope.

@BadCircuit - Either StarCraft II or Super Mario Galaxy 2. Both games are the greatest in their respective genres. The latter is probably better, and may just be the best game of all time. IMO, of course.

BadCircuit4880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

What would you have?

@AGhostFromThePast - Starcraft II won the other platform exclusive game of the year and the top 5 could only be from the Xbox 360, so neither of those two are possible candidates.

gaminoz4880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

It's good to include other platform picks as so many people have more than one, even if they mostly game on one console.

I agree the PC had a strong showing this year and PS3's God of War and Heavy Rain were popular, but probably not as big as SC 2...

GWAVE4880d ago

My "GotY" is MGS: Peace Walker.

ME2, RDR, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Bad Company 2, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Limbo, Golden Sun, Donkey Kong Returns....the list goes on. All these games I enjoyed, but I enjoyed Peace Walker the most and for the longest period of time. That's why it was my GotY, and that doesn't have to affect anyone else's choice.

See? An easy way to choose GotY.

BadCircuit4880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

All the top games are up there so I agree with the choices by OXCGN. Having Mass Effect 2 and Halo Reach as the top two is easily understandable as they were the stand-outs for this year in my opinion.

RememberThe3574880d ago (Edited 4880d ago )

True, but Alan Wake over God of War 3? Are they high? I loved Alan Wake, but that game needed more work to even reach half the quality of God of War 3. Hell, quality wise God of War 3 is at the top this year. That game is polished like a diamond.

From what I've had the pleasure of playing this year, God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Gran Turismo 5, and Red Dead Redemption are the only GOTY candidates.

MariaHelFutura4880d ago

ME2, GT5 and GOW3 are my GOTYs.

Immortal Kaim4880d ago

My top games this year (in no particular order) would be:

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mass Effect 2
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

RememberThe3574880d ago

Assassin's Creed was a great game. I would have spend more time with it if it wasn't for GT5. I love that series.

Proeliator4880d ago

It's a good list. While it may not reflect EVERYONE'S opinion, they did say that they all voted on it.

gaminoz4880d ago

Plus they have a poll so we can say what we think. I like seeing polls to see what the general public think.

So far Mass Effect 2 is still the public's choice too...

Proeliator4880d ago

Well, it's an excellent game, sir/madame. I'm glad the PS3 audience gets to experience it soon.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran820d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto19d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia20d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger20d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie20d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos20d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie20d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh20d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming25d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long25d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming25d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple10124d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor25d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6925d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming25d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno25d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming25d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave31d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan31d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
