IGN: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Vietnam Review

Earlier this year, DICE released what I consider the best multiplayer shooter of 2010 with Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Somehow, while pumping out a steady stream of free content updates to Bad Company 2 proper, developing a co-operative add-on for the game, and creating the multiplayer component for Medal of Honor from scratch for EA studio mates Danger Close, DICE has found the time to deliver Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Vietnam, and with it, what might be their best multiplayer experience this year.

The problem I have with BC2 on the PS3 at least is that nobody on my friend's list plays this game anymore. I enjoyed the game but I can't find people to play with. On top of that if I go online after 1am, every game I join has less than half players (12 players total, 6 on each).

I find it ironic that people who love Battlefield trash and bash Dice's BF:BC2 as if "ehhh its not hardcore and purist enough fur mee im too awesome want PC luv"

yet they forget that BF:BC2 is also a game from DICE

I actually met one of the people working with imagination studio's (mo-cap for BF:BC2) and they said that DICE work as hard and as passionately with BF.BC2 as they would with any other BF series.

no game is 2nd best, every game they do is important for them

so if you don't care about bf:bc2, you show as much respect as if you don't care for any of DICE's games

because in all honestly, they ALL rock.

so please mr.puristelitists, show some respect for a great dev and a great MP online experience.

BF3 isn't going to be radically different on the basic levels, either. I would bet BF3 just adds to the formula and expands the player count, so if you don't like BC2 you are probably going to be disappointed by BF3.

I agree but BC and BC2 isn't exactly the best of DICE. When I look back at past games of the series can't help that I find the older games much more fun. Vietnam looks promising though.

@visualb I think for the most part the complaints about the game were about holding out on game modes to release them as DLC on the maps we already had. I'm getting nam day 1, I just hope they don't treat it like BFBC2's online

I probably logged in 1100hrs in BFBC2 for ps3, at one point I hit up 26th on the leaderboards. stopped playing for RDR, then went back after map pack 6 (can't remember ). 2 months ago I stopped playing entirely , after being tierd of the same maps and waiting and more waiting for map packs, plus killing the same newbs over and over got tiring. DICE releases weapons tweek, oh well not needed cause I platinum'd all weapons halfway through the games release life cycle. I ain't picking up BFBC2 DLC , plus im trading in BFBC2 eventually ( I had my fix). I doubt vietnam will bring back the bfbc2 momentum long term to players and just be a HYPED flavor of the month. it will sell well but how long do you think the ps3 community will be playing it long term? look at the next comming ps3 line up, kz3, lbp2 etc.
I just hope DICE's next MO is BF3. I hope it will not be dumbed down for consoles. I don't mean gameplay , BFBC control's are solid. I don't mean destructive environments enhancements , that was a good introduced style .
if bf3 is on a scale level as bf2, with bfbc2 aspects , it will be epic.
What I miss the most about bf :
dogfighting with jets, carriers , 64 players or being able to join low count rooms (etc 64, 32, 24,) , being able to join different map sizes ( sections of map are reduced depending on servers choice), higher squad numbers , the zip line and grappling hook and different faction's.

Give us a real battlefield dice with planes, large maps, and battle recorder. Also for the love of god nerf the snipers most overpowered class in the history of battlefield.

True but snipers in BFBC2 are so easy to kill. All that time looking downfield in their fav camp spots means you can creep up and knife 2 or 3 who are not paying attention.

When that option is gone I play Battlefield 1943 or revert to MW2 =( lol.

Black ops is good but you are truly missing out if you've never tried BC2.....that has nothing to do with what I think of Black Ops (still play it) but BC2 is just one of those rare games that does multiplayer pretty much entirely right

after those occurred did you think about how to avoid them? or destroy them? or did you try to lone wolf it until you just gave up on the game....

I'm not trying to troll you, there's just no thinking involved in COD, and when people make the jump they make assumptions that just because they can't storm in the front gate that there is no infantry battles at all. You just have to be smarter than "sprint with smg down corridor and dolphin dive x10" and move with your squad and when you do, no sniper or tank is going to stop you from murdering their entire team on route to their MCOM.

You can't just run around with no resolve because there are tanks and snipers....it's called strategy

LOL, you sound like a COD player. If someone kills you with a tank do the following. 1.Return to the tank and be mildly stealthy and shoot him with an RPG or use a mine or even C4. 2.Get yourself a tank and go blow his ass up. 3. Use a mortar strike. Getting sniped is pretty easy if you run around the map as if it were COD. This game is not COD. Personally I barely even see any Snipers in this game anymore. Plus I generally know all the good sniping spots so I know where to find the snipers right away.

I don't like Cod. BC2 gets annoying when everyone in the other team is sniping every corner. The only tactical online shooter I ever liked and played a lot of hours, was Socom 2. To me, still no game matches Socom 2 tactical online gameplay, even confrontations. In Socom everyone has a mic and talks about strategy. The few times i played BC it was always silent, people were too busy sniping. Ill give BC2 another try.. and another reason i disliked BC2 was because of all the glitches like the gun disappearing and game freezes.

Yes socom 2 was the best. Wasted years of my life on that and lost a girl over it and I don't regret it. Amazing game. My group of friends had it and it was a blast playing together. No other multiplayer compares to this date. This is one game I will never forget and I hope socom 4 has half the impact on me.

No some people call MAG bad coz it doesn't have aim assist, it has friendly fire always on and yes if you die you can't magically respawn out of the a$$ of your squad mates. For this reason a lot of scrubs end up getting teabagged in MAG. BTW those same noobs get r**ed in BFBC2 all the time so I kinda like that game too.

Since scopes are gone, it seems most encounters will be in close quarters. It remains to be seen what kind of shotgun they have. i hope they don't have the stupid auto-shotguns coz I am sure those guns weren't around in the Vietnam era. Maybe its just me but I don't think the flamethrower will be a big deal.

In BC2, although yes it's not perfect it takes WAY more skill to knife someone because you have to be almost perfectly staring at them. In COD as long as they're sort of close you just knife and the dude like glides over to you for the stab it's so dumb.

edit: just watched the video, looks like he wasn't close enough to me. Seems fair to me, he panicked and stabbed and was just a bit too far. Whenever I go for a knife kill it's sneaking up and I make sure I'm almost right up to the person.

As a long time bf2 fan, I didn't dig bc2 as much, the shooting seemed to be much more noob friendly. The light machine gun for instance can't really be operated correctly unless prone, which isn't even in the game. I understand the prone thing, kind of, but they also had no planes, no commander( which I don't think alot of people even know about). Plus the health regen, and the fact that getting revived still counts as a death(I didn't get killed if I was revived).....I mean don't get me wrong frostbite is the shizzy and bc was a step in the right direction on consoles, however, they removed alot of content....oh yeah, and running over people in bc2 is a joke compared to bf2 which is baffling.

You seem like a old school BF player, I know exactly the points you address. BFBC franchise is pretty solid and set alot of good aspects for the next installments. There is alot of 'what if's' with bfbc.

I have one question. If this's supposed to be during the conflict in Vietnam then why is there an XM8 in the pick? This looks like a pic from Bad Company 2 but I'm having trouble remembering this scene. The XM8 was a prototype modular weapons system developed that was first developed in 2003 but never went past the prototype phase. Is there something I'm missing?

The one game in my memory from ages ago of the most fun I've EVER had in a multiplayer game BY FAR was 4 player splitscreen on the N64 with Goldeneye. I had all the maps memorized, me and the buds played it all the time. I never thought I would find a game that brought so much fun to multiplayer... but BC2 did it for me, it's my favourite multiplayer game of all time now. I never would of that to put 120 hours into a game, usually I'd sell a game after I beat it and moved onto the next one, but there's something addicting about trying to collects all those pins and insignias in-game. So freagin' fun.
