"Back in March, I outlined first quarter 2007 sales for a new generation of consumer electronics, including the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Zune, and estimated sales into the future. The 360 costs $350 now. It was $400 for 1 year and 8 months. You think they might have reached their sell through at that price? The PS3 is relatively new there are people that want it at any price and some that want it at a lower price, case in point the 60 gig clearance sale. The Wii is just inexpensive and fun for casual gamers so it sells like crazy. I would say though how well will the Wii sell when the 360 is at $200 and the PS3 at $300? That controller is fun but in the end everyone is a graphics whore. This gen is a battle for the entertainment center of your home and has a long way to play out. What happens when MS gets those 360's in homes as set top boxes? These graphs are nice but they are not complete.

Getting on topic, It's an interesting chart, and I don't think that it's a surprise that the Wii is out in front when considering that everyone bought into the hype. I think this upcoming holiday season may very well determine who will "win" this round of the always-overblown console wars.

The article was quick and clear to mention the 360's loss of market share and any other flaw with the 360. It also mentioned that a 20 month old 360 was "forced" to do a price drop because the PS3 was gaining with it's price drop, however the PS3s price drop was called a clearance sale (What a bunch of BULLSH!T)

Anyway, the only reason he brought the wii along for the ride was so that he would not have to make the 360 a winner over the PS3. The wii numbers are firm and factual. But I noticed he used shipped numbers (which means nothing)because it make the PS3 look better. Underneath this whole story he's really comparing the PS3 and the 360, just too afraid to compare them head to head.

One last thing, a lead is a lead whether it's by 10 thousand or by 4 million. If I beat you by 1 or if I beat you by 50, I have still beaten you. So, don't try to lighten the blow by saying "you were leading by 1 million but in the end you only beat me by 200,000. So damn what, I still beat you! You are still a loser.

PS3 FANBOYS are always using subpoints to try to claim a victory examples:

PS3 gaining on the 360 in units sold (still loosing)

PSN has better downloadable games than XBL (What about the rest of the service)

LAIR & WARHAWK are better than anything out on the 360 (Losing in sales to bioshock and blue dragon)

"Home" is going to kick XBL in the A$$ (home is an interface not a service, it should be compared to the XBL dashboard. Even then the novelty will wear off and you will soon get tired of walking through the house just to see your trophy case. Then if will become a pain like a cut scene that can't be skipped.

This are only statistics, by the NPD in which you believe much more then in VGcharts(as i remember from your posts) and the consoles are only at the begining of the race, there isn't a winner yet, only a momentary leader, first was 360(because of it's head start obviously) now is the wii (because of it's price) tomorrow it can be the ps3 or another one between 360 or wii. The ps2 wasn't the winner after it's first 18 months( and it wasn't first released, but dreamcast) the xbox sold alot better at the launch and so the gamecube, the ps2 was considered an undisputed leader of console gaming only after it's first 4-5 years. WOW James Walker. PGR4 can hardly compare to GT5 :Prologue, so how the hell is it going to compare to the whole game which is gonna be much better?

MGS4 and Halo are different genres so you can't compare the two, they are both the best in their own areas.

Final fantasy 13 will destroy Mass effect. Look we all know FF13 is going to be good, no doubt about that, over 3 years in the making its like gonna be as good as FF7 at least. Not to mention Versus 13 is also a part of that. Mass effect doesn't seem that great, I will admit it is good, but I doubt it can hold against something like FF13. Plus they are being released at completely different times. I doubt anyone would be playing Mass effect in 2009.

Funny site. They "extrapolate" the numbers according to the past trend and the update when exact numbers are available. The funny thing is, if that's true, the Wii numbers should increment twice as fast as the 360, while the 360 and PS3 should be on par (the lead is the last year, currently they sell about the same). No one saying Wii won't win; its in its own casual consumer price friendly market not quite in the Next-gen powerhouse market but above the handheld market.

PS3 isn't going to do sh*t, it has only won sales for a couple of weeks sense it launched(MS could have sold more before PS3 launched but their supply was sh*t and Sony lied to the WORLD; had millions of gamers waiting).

It's still on pace with the ps3 in every territory except japan and parts of europe, selling consistently well and even beating it in some other places, like the us and uk, where it overcomes the difference found in other territories. Until the ps3 outsells the 360 worldwide (which it hasn't yet) then their lead isn't reducing.

I have without a doubt though, that in 2008 the PS3 will lead, the 360 in a close second and the wii will have lost it's steam and dropped down to third.

Don't we all just ignore the Wii? I mean, really. Does it count? There's millions of people playing Bejeweled every day but we don't count the sales of that product up against the Halos and MGSs and whatnot. The Wii is in the same bucket as that casual crap you can download online for $5.

The 360 is leading over the ps3 in worldwide sales, and in america according to ndp numbers.

The 360 has yet to release halo 3 a game that's going to push a lot of consoles (only half of current 360 owners owned an original xbox).

Until 2008 Sony does not have a single title that can match halo 3, and there's always the possibility of lost exclusivity.

Blu-ray still hasn't been crowned the winner of the new format (close but just not there).

until some of these requirements are met the ps3 will trail behind the 360. I'm not saying the ps3 won't catch up, I think it will but i can guarantee it wont be till 2008, and it wont happen over night.

Lets not forget though about Japan, the 360 has a lot of games, but its nothing in Japan! The psp out sells it in Japan Halo3 is big, but in Japan its not even on the top 10 most wanted list. Before you say who the hell cares, whatever wins in japan, normally wins the war, and until the 360 gets big there games like MGS and FF have a harder time being multiplatform. Yes, eternal sonata and blue dragon are a start, but they didn't really give the shot in the arm, like they were hoping, like hot shots golf 5 did for ps3 in Japan. The 360 better not forget about those guys on that island!!

You also have to recognize that Japan is known as being a 1 console nation, and it looks like they've already chosen the wii. So I don't think that really helps the PS3's cause as you can already see more focus from japanese gamers being placed on the wii.

Also, every company is about making money, and one cannot deny the attach rate with the 360, japanese developers have noticed it and some have even embraced the 360 with open arms(capcom, namco-bandai), while more traditional ones haven't(SE, factor 5) but are at least willing to try.

Like I said the ps3 wont begin to make gains until 2008. And I'll stick by that. Until FF or MGS are released.

bloodmask is correct it is alot of wait. Sony makes allot of promises also and only delivers about 75 percent. He just forgot to be fair and say MS doesn't make you wait they just give you a barebones machine and wait for something to get popular on playstation and then release yet another skew that has the same. It works remarkably well seeing as the defect rate is so high they can swap in new sku's for the old ones. Even though that's getting the shaft it doesn't matter because MS has allot of money. I don't understand what money has to do with guilt or innocence but that's the reasoning I keep hearing.

The sales figures in that graph shows the 360 is near about a constant rate, similar growth actually, to Sony's platform. It's not rapidly losing anything.

Although I do agree that being able to compare growth rate with a largely more expensive machine with few great titles is not a good sign. We shall have to wait until 2008, 2007 is pretty much signed and sealed with Master Chief slowly loading his Assault Rifle to massacre the competition.

What an intelligent person would realize is that:

a) The title does not, in fact, state that Sony is exclusively making up ground on Microsoft.

b) The graphs produced show that it is the Wii that is outperforming both the MS and Sony consoles, and that this alone would be enough to make the title valid - even if Sony had yet to sell a single console, the rate at which Nintendo is selling consoles would outstrip Microsoft's head start.

c) Sales of Sony's console are at a relatively even pace with Microsoft's console. If you look at the slope of the lines, the 360 and PS3 appear to be running almost exactly parallel since spring. So if Nintendo was taken out of the equation, the title would no longer be valid and Microsoft's head start would remain about even.

Look at the charts. The so called "FACTS". The PS3 does not look like its going to catch 360 ANYTIME soon. If you don't believe me, look at the charts. Good point Dr Rage. You are really a smart person. Well let's look at some stats from vgcharts. Before the PS3 launched the 360 had a lead of 10 million consoles. Then the PS3 launched. And its been 9 months since then. Now lets look at the stats again.

So in 9 months the XBOX 360 sells another 2 million. And the PS3 with its high price and with its lack of games (thats what the xbots say) and with bluray ( :) ) sells 4-5 million.

On a world wide scale PS3 has been outselling 360 since beginning of the year. I hope people are remembering that America is not the only place the console war is been fought (to the XBOTS fans. 360 is doing bad in Japan and Europe and PS3 sales are almost matching it in America.

It surprises me as a PS3 fan how well the console seems to be doing, despite not having any real system sellers. I mean warhawk is a great game but no PS3 fan or fanboy was really hyping this one up, the way they were Lair and Heavenly Sword. We all know what the critics have to say about Lair and Heavenly and Warhawk. And with the upcoming holiday line-up I see the PS3 further improving their sales.

The Wii is also surprising to me. The whole it's only $250 excuse doesn't cut it. There is really nothing worth playing on the system with the exception of Zelda and Wiisports, so for the system to be selling like hotcakes is amazing.

Now the 360 is in a crazy stitution, it has for the most part been stalling in sales. But I don't really attirbute that to the PS3 price drop. I think it has more to do with HALO 3. I think all 360 fans and fanboys have been saving their pennies in order to get everything halo ( game, controllers, halo scheme console, etc.) when the game is released. So all the stalling that appears apperent will not be there anymore once Halo 3 is released. This game will make the 360 #1 for the 07 year. Not really surprising but that is what will happen.

'08 promises to be a good year for gamers all around and 'o8 will be the year that I think a definite winner will be crowned for this console war.

Anyone can see that the Wii is doing spectacular. You would be fool to down play it's success. However the Playstation 3 isn't a threat to anyone. All you have to do is look at the rate the Playstation 3 is moving and it's piss poor software sales which has been well documented.

Although the Wii is selling more systems per month than the Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 maintains better software sales. Most Wii users stick with First Party software. Where as both First Party and Third party software is selling well on Xbox 360.

Wow METROID is a great game and its getting great reviews so your wrong about that one, but your right about 360 being dead in japan and I don't think there any game that can save them out there(maybe NG2 but that might be multi-platform and even if it wasn't its not going to sell that many units over there).

Gamers, gather 'round. We are finally entering a time when each system has killer titles available. Finally, every Xbox owner will not have to pretend that they haven't been waiting for Halo 3 for all this time. Every PS3 player will have their steroid filled gears of war shooter, UT3, to play. Wii owners will be butt stomping the universe, and Nintendo will continue butt-stomping the competition. Our eyes are now on our favorite developers, not necessarily the systems, but who is making what games, and how we should judge their quality. Just a few months ago we were in a different boat. PS3 had few games, and Halo 3 looked like Halo 2 with better HDR lighting and textures. Killzone 2 was an impossibility, and Nintendo fans were scrambling for news about Mario Galaxy. Now we've got some cool stuff going, and games on the horizon that are ambitious and looming. Xbox, PS3, and Wii fans, we all wait for the games we love. That's just it. If you are going to love a game, you will wait for the title to come out. Just look at what people did before the last Harry Potter came out... They waited! Same thing with the movie and videogame industry. Owners of Xbox 360s, make sure you spend your money on more than just Halo 3. With the legendary edition costing 120, and accessories upping the bill way past PS3 system price when bundled with a 360, you are leaving little left for the titles you mentioned earlier in your lists of glory. We all need to watch our numbers and statistics, and even moreso, we need to watch how we treat each other on here, and if we do intend to be insulting, to use correct spelling and grammar. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but there won't be another price cut for the 360 anytime soon even if the FALCON 65 comes out in a few weeks. The next time you see a price cut will be next year for each console, right now the 360 is out selling the PS3 and it wouldn't make any sense for MS to drop the price of the 360 if one of their biggest games is about to be released.

The only system that might drop its price is the 80Gb PS3, simply because they would drop it from $600 to $500 and that isn't really a price cut for the system. The only way MS would have another price cut is if SONY announce that they will drop the PS3 to $400 and thats not happening until Q2 08.

The only reason Wii is winning is because of Japan, where it is selling super fast and Xbox 360s are collecting dust on store shelves.

Here's a look at American sales (in millions of consoles sold):

360: 6.96
Wii: 4.58
PS3: 1.96

And Japanese sales (in millions of consoles sold):

Wii: 3.56
PS3: 1.16
360: 0.44

and then in places like Europe the 360 is still slightly ahead of Wii, but not by much, and PS3 is in last.

If Microsoft had released an amazing RPG for Japanese gamers when 360 launched, 360 would have a big lead still. Instead they offered only western oriented titles that did not really get Japanese gamers excited about the 360.

In my opinion the competition is more between 360 and PS3, since they are targeted at really the same audience (which includes most of the hardcore gamers) whereas Wii is going for mostly the casual gaming group.

Really it'll be interesting to see what happens to the Wii in a year. It is selling so fast that there's no doubt its going to hit some sort of tapering off point soon...especially next year if the 360 and PS3 get price drops and the Wii doesn't.

Sony is still make a killing in PS2 software and hardware sales as there are millions upon millions of PS2 and people still buying games for it. PS2 is already in the profitability category and so they make money quite easily (even on the hardware). PS3 will eventually take its seat among the other players. I actually like Sony's strategy with this. The other console makers just dump older systems and concentrate on new systems and while that is efficient, it doesn't leave much to loyalty among consumers. History shows that this works for Sony and though slow in adoption the PS2 crowd will eventually convert over just like they did when switching from PS1 to PS2.

Matter of fact, Sony is doing a much better job starting this time than with the PS2 and the PS3 is also way closer to achieving the hype Sony advertise than PS2 ever came. I say it might even be possible to actually match it once everybody figures the Cell processor out!

Of course it takes time but the potential is there and I believe the Playstation crowd will stay true. Remember, Sony could lose half their Playstation user base and still have more customers than Microsoft and Nintendo combined with the original xbox and Gamecube (that number hovers around 50 million)

I think People forget that its not Sony that needs to prove themselves its Microsoft and Nintendo. Microsoft is a very big commericial entity so despite only have a slight lead over the Gamecube it received much broader support by game developers than Nintendo.

While Nintendo's Wii is a step in the right direction for Nintendo, its not the system its Nintendo's personality and business practices that tend to get it into trouble. Gamecube was a very good game machine it just had a few flaws (controller was that great). Nintendo has a habit of pushing hardware early then dropping the hardware push and concentrate on their software titles. Nintendo didn't even put much effort into promoting software creation among Third Party game developers. I'm still not convinced Nintendo has changed their ways. I'll wait til Christmas 2008 to see just how Nintendo is doing then decide if this surge is just loyal Gamecube fans hungry for a new system or if Nintendo actually willing to kiss developers but a little to support their system more.

Microsoft has had a lot of bad luck (or bad business practices). Its been nothing but negativity for Microsoft fans and took a year for them to get a true Next Gen game out on their system. They are still plague with problems and all their FUD they used against Sony (like 1080p isn't needed nor HDMI or HD movie making or non gaming essentials like photo, web browsing, etc...) and yet here we are seeing Microsoft become the hypocrite they are releasing Xboxes with HDMI bigger drives and non gaming entertainment - on a machine and architecture that wasn't initially designed for it.

Sony on the other had designed the PS3 to be more than a game machine. PSN network is showing that it has the potential but we still need to see if Sony can pull it off. Sony is doing better now in the first year than they did with the PS2 in its first year and Sony's first year titles are on par with games that Microsoft and crew took a year to come out with. Basically, Sony isn't nor shouldn't be worried at this point. Also it is my opinion that Sony's original price point has always been $499 and the extra $100 was just an extra kick back (much like what Apple did with the iPhone dropping it $200 only after 2 months out). I say as Long as Sony sees equivalent to better numbers than PS2 the same time into its life cycle things will stay pretty much the same regardless how well the other two are doing. I expect somewhere between winter 2009 to winter 2010 Sony will shrink the PS3 and tighten up the electronics which should reduce what it cost to make the PS3 and thus allowing a $200 dollar price drop?

Why such a steep price around this time? Remember, Microsoft released the Xbox 360 November 2005. Well November 2010 is the 5 year mark (original xbox was only out for little over 4 years since it launched in Nov. 2001. If Microsoft is feeling the pressure from Nintendo and Sony then 2010 will be the time for a new more powerful Xbox (perhaps even a complete new name change as well) Sony will more an likely just do what I said and drop the PS3 drastically then try to hold on one or more years(2011 or 2012) then release a megabeast PS4 against whatever Microsoft's new beast is in 2010 giving Sony time to tweak their system to make Microsoft cry. Another point to make is that I believe the Cell is truly a powerful processor - way ahead of its time processor. Matter of fact, I believe all Sony have to do next Playstation is Pump out a New Graphic card, add more memory, improve bus speeds a bit. If anything the Cell's layout could remain the same with the exception of making it smaller (45nm or 30nm) and raising its speed ( 5 or 6Ghz perhaps I believe IBM has already demonstrated this is possible). This would reduce cost significantly because the Main Processor essentiall is the same and Sony can concentrate the money on more important things like Next Gen GPU, more memory and bus speeds.

I really don't see anything to cry about as far as Sony goes and Sony fans already know how Sony flows so no surprises here.

I have a feeling my predictions are pretty spot on for Xbox 360 and PS3 but Nintendo is truly a wild card. Maybe they got it right this time maybe not, but I definitely will wait a couple years this time to feel out how Nintendo's attitude is. By then I also expect a pretty good price reduction ($150 maybe) specially if Sony decides to go aggresive price wise around the 2010 year (Microsoft will make sure of that).

Well what about it? Without being to fanboyish do you think these predictions have merit. Like to tweak it a bit but don't say I didn't warn you when Microsoft announces their new system in 2009-2010 year. Watch Sony counter not with a new system but a huge discount maybe even a redesign to save some money (like they did with the PS2). Remember PS3 will only have been out 4 years Winter 2010) Possible that Nintendo might even pick this time to introduce a Wii HD (hey kind of catchy) But who knows, Nintendo's developer support and motivation has been spotty at best and we all know in order to have games you need developers - something Nintendo failed at with the Gamecube.

I've been saying this forever, but it is not until late Q3 '08/early Q4 '08 that we will all see the results on a graph of where 360 will be because of all these new 90nm/RROD consumers. I believe your wrong. Sony has always wanted a "do more" system and Playstation has always been the expensive of the consoles. It was old and xbox was out selling at $200 the Sony was still trying to hold the $200 price point and then slowly lowered the price point to the $150 even though the original xbox was obviously more powerful machine at the time. Microsoft definitely had a good strategy back then problem is they were too late in the game and Sony was ready to release their upcoming product during Xbox 5th year (actually Sony made it seem like 2005-2006 which is one of the reasons Microsoft rushed the xbox 360. This rush is what really hurt Microsoft this time and developers as well as Microsoft just weren't ready. Sony brand has always had premium and people know this. When people by Sony products they know they are not going to get a cheap unit but they will end up paying for it. This is synonymous with all Sony products. If anything Sony attracts the upper type crowd not the cheap.

I believe Sony is comfortable with that. There are a lot of people who want affordable gaming and I believe this is a competition between Microsoft and Nintendo not Microsoft and Sony. People who buy Sony products aren't just buying to get games they want a quality experience with everything - including the hardware. Sony's PS3 does just this, it is an exceptional piece of hardware and feels like you get what you paid for (unlike the Wii or Xbox 360 that feel and look toyish and, in MS's case, break down often like toys usually do these days).

So basically your basis for people who buy Playstations are because they are kiddy or cheap is wrong.

How can PS3 be a failure. Are you saying the original xbox was a failure. It released a year later did quite well and had lots of support. It didn't have the numbers the PS2 had but it wasn't the end of the world. What happen is Xbox didn't have no user base and did 30mil its first time out - not to shabby. PS2 had a huge following and is over 100mill systems out. I just don't think Sony will lose over 50% of its install base - the PS3 is still good enough to hold over 50% of its consumer base.

This doom and gloom by xbots isn't good because in a way it says they admit Xbox was a failure because it launched a year late - when that's not true (I'm not calling you and xbot so don't flame me). Just saying that don't believe the hype put on by them.

I believe Microsoft jump the gun a little too early. They could have waited a year and included an HD DVD in the system and HDMI and still been competitively price against the PS3. They could have done more hardware testing and polished everthing an given developers another year to perfect their games. Their software launch would have been huge, very polished, and had Gears of War as is first launch title. If this had happen we wouldn't been talking right now but Microsoft blew it and Sony keeps closing the Technology/fun gap while Wii steals the Cheap/fun crowd.

I believe Microsoft isn't going to get the uppity crowd with the xbox 360 or change loyal PS fans in large enough numbers to do any damage. What they need to concentrate on is Wii and making sure that if Sony indeed regains the lead that there is a Second Place for them. The battle to convince Wii people that it isn't worth the price of admission is much easier to fight than trying to convince PS fans that their system is less powerful or is less feature rich than the xbox 360 (which I strongly disagree with and Sony seems to be proving otherwise).

It doesn't matter anyway. If MS fails this time around They'll release a new machine within 5 years of its lifecycle (they may do it anyways even with a more successful Xbox). With Technology progressing so fast it will be to much temptation not to come out with a System in 2010.

now when you consider that every month since the release of the ps3 the 360 has outsold ps3 in total sales when you combine the NPD#'s and those weekly sales #'s we see out of Japan= except for July where you would see a small lead for ps3 in total sales for US and Japan since US sales for the 360 were only slighty higher than ps3 in July which doesnt make up the difference for the poor 360 sales in Japan that US sales usually do

the ps3 is NOT catching up to the 360 based on NPD numbers since 360 has in fact outsold ps3 every month so far, yes Japan helps ps3 sales make up some ground but its not enough, and we have no real hard data from the rest of the world

if you actually take the time to look an analyze the graph and skipped his lecture about micro not selling as well as they did last yr, you will see that micro sales are pretty constant, maybe slowing slighty but its still pretty consistent for the next gen console that has been out the longest, the only thing the graph actually shows is that the ps3 sales have picked up/closed the gap with 360, but they are still in fact selling LESS= you can't overcome a lead without selling MORE than your competitor, NOT CLOSE, NOT SIMILIAR, but MORE *CONSISTENTLY and if you want to do it this gen then you better SELL ALOT MORE *CONSISTENTLY than your competitor (like Wii) or you're going to be behind for along time=

In October the ratio of PS3 to 360 is 6m to 0
and by Feb-March the ratio is 1:6
and June the ratio is 1:3
Now the ratio is 1:2

You are right that 360 outsell PS3 for the most part, but that number is in 10k-20k range not significant like 100k range and some month PS3 outsell 360 altogether. Looking at another side, PS3 manage to sell near 6m with thin games library, thats pretty impressive.

Im not sure where some of you guys get your facts from but 2 different places NPD and VGcharts both put the ps3 around 4.5m and the 360 and 10.6 now there is no way both web sites that deal in sales are going to be that way off when it comes to the numbers maybe a couple of thousdand. The fact is the install base between the 2 is 6m for the ps3 to catch up it will have to out sell the 360 by 500thousdand for the next 12 months to draw even. That really doesnt sound very plausable does it? I really dont think the ps3 will catch up to the 360 by 2008 like some people have mentioned(do the maths its all there) will it close the cap I would deffinatly bet it will, how much I really dont know or care cause I am loving playing both the 360 and ps3. A lot of people don't understand Sony. Yes the are in third right now but how can they remain so calm. Its because they are comparing their success with the success of the PS2. PS2 had a horrible start and was the inferior of the two consoles Xbox and PS2. Now, PS3 is doing incredible better than the PS2 and the quality of games (not quantity which they could use) is way better than what xbox 360 had at its launch/first year.

Sony is competiting with themselves not the others. They have confidence in their product and seem to be sticking to their plan despite Microsoft's best efforts to change the Xbox 360 to imitate the PS3 more.

Truth be told - Xbox fans keep crying that the xbox 360 is more powerful of the two but People don't just buy systems only for the pretty graphics. People want value in their system and value doesn't always mean lowest cost. Its the overall experience and Sony always seems to balance its console for everybody much better than MS or Nintendo do.

Completely stupid article, not sure what the Zune had to do with the sales between consoles first. Next outside of initial sales of the PS3 Sony has sold less per month than Microsoft, so with that information I’m still wondering how Sony is catching anyone. Now if this article was how Microsoft is losing its lead to Nintendo, then yes that would be a factual statement. I just wonder where these fan drodes come up with this crap. Another thing if we are going to call this the worse sales for MS we definitely have to call it the worse sales for Sony because Sony is selling less then launch time, but anyone with a brain would expect that to be with most items.

Because even if your selling this then microsoft, if you've increased your own sales, then your still gaining.

Say last month sony sold. 180,000. Microshit sold 200,000.

Next month sony sold 190,000. Microshit sold 205,000.

Your still gaining.

Dosent mean your going to catch them up that quickly. But its a start.
