PS Unlimited Writes: In 1988 Namco looked to push the envelope for the portrayal of violence within a videogame when they released Splatterhouse in arcades around the world. The game put players in control of Rick, who becomes possessed by an evil mask following his death at the hands of demonic forces. The mask gives Rick another chance at life, endowing him with bizarre powers and super-human strength unlike any normal entity. Setting out on a quest to save his girlfriend Jennifer, Rick encounters enemies that would have been considered disturbing at the time, smashing them with either his fists or the numerous weapons the game gave players to use. While the sheer vulgarity of the game caused controversy amongst parents and the gaming industry back in the 80s, Splatterhouse has become more of a novelty today for most, worth nothing more than a chuckle.
