Scrutiny and Hype: 'Gran Turismo 5' Review Roundup

XMNR: Any game with a pedigree like Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo is bound to be subject to two things after over five years in development: intense scrutiny and deafening hype. On launch day, the first batch of reviews for Gran Turismo 5 certainly display both ends of the spectrum, ranging from sobering disappointment to resounding achievement.

That's the problem with hype --some people are always bound to be disappointed. At the end of the day though, it boils down to what makes YOU happy. No reviewer (and let's be honest, they're a dime a dozen) shouldn't tell you how you should feel about something YOU'RE paying for.

killyourfm4930d ago

I mostly agree with you - but let's face it: literally millions of gamers rely on these reviews to influence their buying decision.

T9X694930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

"iterally millions of gamers rely on these reviews to influence their bragging rights."

FIXED.

Don't matter if GT5 got 1/10's across the board, GT fans will still buy it, and there's enough GT fans to insure the game wont be a flop.

@NYC_Gamer - Really? Check Gamefaqs and IGN forums. GT5 fans aren't happy with some of the review scores.

http://boards.ign.com/ps3_l...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boa...

I'm sure these two sites aren't the only ones with pissed off fans.

NYC_Gamer4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

fans of gaming outside of these forums dont care about reviews

Edit:
i was talking about the average gamer on the street...none of them care about scores they just buy games...

STONEY44930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

GTPlanet (basically the biggest GT fan site) doesn't seem to care about the reviews either. In fact, they poke fun at the stupid contradictions and complaints (no rubber banding AI... really?) that these reviews have, and how unprofessional some of them are.

Edit:

"i was talking about the average gamer on the street...none of them care about scores they just buy games..."

For the most part, correct. Such as Black Ops, no one who was buying it cared about the glitches or having worse reception than Modern Warfare 2, or looking up reviews. Everyone who was going to buy it bought it anyways, and the ones who weren't obviously wouldn't be persuaded by reviews.

All the Gran Turismo fans are buying it regardless. I'm pretty sure the people who don't care about racing games won't be reading the reviews. Hey, look at GT5 Prologue. over 5 million sales, and it was a $40 with reviews in the 80s (which, because of the score inflation these days... people on forums fail to realize it's a good score, and call it a "flop"). No ones cares about the reviews.

Really, the only time reviews matter to me are with third-party console games. PC reviews don't matter since I'll probably have it one day from a $5 Steam sale impulse buy. First-party established franchises are already a day-1 buy in my head (MGS, UC, LBP, ect.).

Dee_914930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

not in this case
they are reviewing the game way too early
i wasnt expecting reviews from major sites till next week

edit: and yes ive been reading alot of reviews .. i never read a review for a game before in my life so im not sure if contradicting sentences are the norm when it comes to reviews
and does the hype from the gamers effect the review ?
it would seem so ..

edit:and it seems like alot of people wanted an arcade racer ( the dumb statement ign made about it being a 10/10 simulator but 5/10 game)

T9X694930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

I still wouldn't be to sure on that. The internet is much bigger today than it was 5-10 years ago. 5-10 years tons of people were still running dial up, were today most people have some sort of high speed connection. It's a lot easier today to hop online and google a game and type review in front of it, than it was 5-10 years ago. I know many people who use to never bother with reviews, but with so many products coming out, especially in gaming and the price of games, many people have turned to reviews before buying a game, or any product for that matter.

CrAppleton4930d ago

@DMarc: yea, the author of this article points that out too. I like how GameSpot refuses to pen theirs until next week.

Death24944930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

T9x69

People plz give this man a bubble. He's exactly right. There is no way people are conviced by these reviews for buying GT. Especially since 14 million people bought GT3 A-spec. People were decided on this game from it's first release date. Also people buy games through word of mouth. If 4 of your friends said: "hey, you should get GT5 man, we just bought it." ,then you probably going to buy since you value your friends opinion more than some guy from a website.

Edit: T9X69 bubble approved

ZombieAssassin4930d ago

T9X69 pretty much nailed it, not that reviews aren't helpful but in the end i think most people ignore them...i mean how many of us bought FF13 even though most reviews said it was a let down I know I did and even though i agree with them now that i've played it i still picked it up.

-Alpha4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

Agree 100% with T9, if people hype the game to be perfect or flawless it's their own fault.

Reviews are for bragging rights, that's all people care for.

Serves people right for not thinking critically and ignoring any possibility of the game having a flaw or two

But it's sad that great games scoring 7-9 have fanboys trashing reviews, throwing tantrums, etc. when those scores are great.

GT5 is hurt not by scores but by fanboy hype.

I think the reviews are good-- obviously the game has its issues, but its still a solid sounding game.

@T9X69: HA, i like your "reviews are fuel for the fanboy" statement. Sadly, true.

I disagree Nyc_Gamer at the end of the day review scores do matter to the consumer (guy on the street). Games that score 7-9 sell more than games 3-6 thats just the way it is. Only once in a whle do you get that rare gem like Psychonauts no one buys and that usually because it gets released next to another high profile game. Review scores also help sell music, movies, theater, books and just about every consumer brand not just games. I play every game I can get good or bad and form my own opinion but I'm a core gamer and we are the minority here.

visualb4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

well said MMFGaming

reviews are hardly ever useful - unless used as **** to sling at someone's face, a technique used by fanboys only

if anyone went by review averages last year for MW2...they would have literally been cheated off their money

the same applies for great games that suffer a lot due to bad reviews / unfair reviews and turn out to be great games

@ killyourfm

I agree many depend on reviews, but not as many as you'd expect. especially not for an established franchise.

COD:BO could have gotten 4's and 5's and it'd still would have sold roughly the same

this also applies for any established franchise, and GT5 is one of the most established out there.

+ as IGN put it, GT5 is a 10/10 simulator, but a 5/10 game, and I can see how that makes sense

ironically, GT5's sales come mostly from people who want a real simulator on a console, not gamers who want to have fun crashing into each other, so obviously its tricky to base yourself on GAME reviews for a SIMULATOR

JUDALATION4930d ago

A reply from youtube sums it up best...

They didnt talk about the online features, about the museum, GT TV, youtube replay upload feature, every special event, the damage progresses as you progress the game, the dealership, GT Auto, tuning shop, course editor, weather effects, day and night transition, licenses, trade cars with your friends online, endurances races, nascar pit stop, the fact that you gotta upgrade once in a while like real life (oil, gas, etc)

This is an experience I'd always longed for, something I'd glimpsed parts of in Project Gotham 2's Nordschleife Nürburgring or Test Drive Unlimited's untamed roadmap – but never so vividly, and never with such profoundly realistic handling.

For me, this is the Holy Grail of driving games!!!

gtsentry4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

remember when yamauchi said the ps3 limited what he wanted to do with gt5,now sony will make ps4 beastlike in power so developers will have hella power to make anything they want in there game....gt6..cant imagine n wont even try to imagine what it will be like on ps4

@killyourfm,polyphony digital said that the reason gt5 took so long to develope was because they scraped the ps2 tech so they had to work from scratch on the ps3 which was new,so yamauchi said gt6 should be developed easier than gt5 since the tech wont be generations apart like ps2 n ps3

killyourfm4930d ago

Problem is GT6 won't be out until the the PS5 launches :-)
(just making a stab at all the Gt5 delays)

raztad4930d ago

GT6 will likely be a PS3 game. Two years from now. GT6=GT5+ some polishing+more premium cars+ some added mode feature. Check KZ for reference. KZ2 took loke 4 years to develop but the sequel has only two years in the making.

alb18994930d ago

If the game isn't what expected ether way will sell a lot but next one people will think about it. Thats the way a good franchise can be killed but i'm not saying thats what is happening in GT5 case....correction.

Fans are not stupid!

KingPin4930d ago

i dont give a damn what all the reviwers say. heck, most of them are biased/secretly fanboys. the thing with fanboyism in reviews is it messes it up both ways- hate a console, they trash the game. love the console, they overlook many of the flaws. what il be doing is the same thing i did since forever.....BUY THE GAME, REVIEW IT FOR MYSELF. if it sux, il trade it in. if its hot, keep it. simple as that.

Masterchef20074930d ago

The game is great but it is not for people who love Arcade Racers. In my opinion GT5 has the most realistic driving experience followed by Forza 3.

Between Sophy and PSVR 2, Polyphony is REALLY pushing videogames forward into a whole new era.

crazyCoconuts203d ago

"Gran Turismo has to run on the PlayStation 5, and that means Sophy cannot consume all the computing resources of the machine."
Interesting - I thought at first Sophy was controlled from their server farms. Seems like they've got it running locally.

Yamauchi on Why Gran Turismo Works in VR Without Making You Sick

Remon: "I didn't expect Gran Turismo 7 to be the most relaxing and soothing game on Playstation VR2 . Yes, it's a high speed racing game with extremely realistic physics. But for me, next to Tetris Effect Connected, it's become the most meditative PSVR 2 experience. What's even more surprising is that Gran Turismo 7 in PSVR 2 doesn't make me sick despite its high speeds.

Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi spoke to me via video chat to discuss why the GT7 feels so enjoyable to drive and what inspired his design choices."

I was very careful not to push myself when i first popped GT7 in VR, by limiting myself to 30 min sessions. I got sick from Drive Club VR. Surprisingly, even after hours of playing on a Gr 3 race, I don’t get sick now.

SullysCigar396d ago

Yamauchi has suggested in the past that choosing a slower car that's a convertible is a good choice for your first drive, because it makes you feel less enclosed, but you still have the frame of reference of the car itself.

When I put friends or family into GT7 on PSVR2, I sit them in front of my wheel, put them in a Mazda MX-5 / Miata, roof off and tuned to remove body roll, improved brakes, slick soft racing tyres and a turbo. This seems perfect, as they spin out less and can get started again more easily if they do. It's not too fast, but fast enough for a first timer. Set up a fan facing them too - that certainly helps.

But people quickly adjust and you just want more variation, speed and handling as you get better at the game. It's the most hooked I've been for years.

XiNatsuDragnel396d ago (Edited 396d ago )

Congratulations Yamauchi

Viljong396d ago

Is vr sickness even a thing. 30 fps games are worse

mandf396d ago

Nothing to do with frames although that has a part. Walking and then saddening stopping messes with your brain for some people. Me included

Viljong396d ago

Switchback is the only game which give me slight nausea same as irl rollercoaster. When it go highspeed and steep downhill comes it feel like my stomach is moving up and im falling off my stool. Interesting that i get the same effect than irl coaster without movement. But i dont call it vr sickness its just very immersive. Other games i play with freemovement and all vignette effects off.

Have GT7 too and playing it without nausea. Its superb in vr mode. Wish i could get the logitech g923 for it. But dualsense is very good aswell and feel right at home after playing forza on series x. Ofc with better haptics that dual sense offer. Only bad thing about gt7 is the unskipable movie when you play it first time. I was getting frustrated after all the motor history it start showing ingame racing i think the whole thingh lasted like 20-30min. Then you get the coffeeshop things and tutorials going on and finally when you get to race you have 120hp hybrid family car.

lucian229396d ago

Any artificial movement can cause motion sickness. Certain games I can't play in vr be cause of it. That's why I prefer games like superhot thst move only when your body moves

kneon395d ago

It's the discrepancy between what you are seeing and feeling and what your brain expects to be seeing and feeling that causes issues in VR. That's why latency is a killer. if you turn your head and the image lags behind it messes you up.

mandf395d ago

Kneon
You're right about that. Gt7 gave me motion sickness in the beginning but went away. I play for 12 hours a day on the weekend with no problems now. Pavlov still gets me. Resident evil is awesome but when I walk it gets me. It gets less over time.

RPGer396d ago

Because the nature of GT games. The game and the camera is static as ever, and it very usable and a prefect way to play racing game with long sessions in VR.

Einhander1971396d ago

I must say I'm still feeling sick when playing Turismo.

Babadook7396d ago (Edited 396d ago )

That’s too bad. Take it slow. Don’t push through uncomfortable feelings. Just play within your limit and build your VR legs over the course of a month or two. Eventually you’ll be able to play much more and with faster cars. It’s worth it, trust me.

And PSVR2 support.

I recently got back into this and am really enjoying it. Working mainly on Circuit Experience to save up enough cash for the Porsche 917K. Should be there after another five or six sessions.

Damn, that should be very cool

CobraKai518d ago

I remember my mind being blown at the reflective cars for the PS1.
