IGN: Kinect vs. Move: By the Numbers

IGN: Now that Microsoft and Sony have both presented interpretations of motion control gaming, now's the time for a little bit of by-the-numbers ratings analysis. It's an interesting time to be a gamer; all three platforms – Kinect, PlayStation Move and Wii MotionPlus – offer movement-based gaming – but Kinect, and to some extent Move, forego the controller completely at times.

Interesting comparisson. I'm kind of suprised they didnt throw in sales numbers to stir the pot a little bit... Oh well I'm loving my move and can't wait for killzone 3 and sorcery...

BrianB4925d ago

looking at the library Kinect wins by a longshot, i mean its about software not hardware and software wise Kinect defecates on Move much like the 360 on Ps3

lol it's about software not hardware?

Tell me, besides the initial lineup of games, what else can Kinect do? I'll be waiting for a reply.

should be 100/10 it reads minds also apparently,..

and about IGN,..
I once literally puked a bit in my mouth when listening to gamescoop,..All the main editors,.. there is so much MS asskissing going on that podcast,.. made me sick,..

PS3 team makes some dumb-ass reviews (like they play a game for 30 minutes ,.. then review it,..(at least learn the f***** controls retards,..) And give low scores to some really great games,.. but as the team they seem the most balanced and not fanboyish,..

At launch..

Kinect wins in the dedicated software department.

Kinect launch software head to head is the best for playing with family and friends, on the same TV or over Live.

Move's strength is it one ups the Wii-mote in accuracy and it can be patched with some older games.

But at launch the dedicated software is limited.

Bottomline if your a 360 owner with Kinect you have some fun options and they earn you achievements

Kinect Adventures is a fun pack-in is easy on the eyes. For example, the river raft has better water effects than the entire Wii library. From my experiences this game was actually a bigger hit with the groups than I thought

But you simply can't go wrong with Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and Kinectimals, or Fitness Evolved.

I still have a blast with Motion Sports and a few games on Games Party..but complete title some of the mini-games on these two are hit and miss.

For Move it's Sports Champion all the way. By far, it's the game tghat get's most run from the Move controllers.

If you want two good family experiences, then I'd get Start the Party and Eye pet (for the younger kids)

The problem with patching older games is that if the developer doesn't implement the controls correctly then the Move controls make the experience worse. I was warned and I still bought Tiger Woods 11 to play with Move and it simply sucked. It was like it was a last second after thought from EA.

2011 should be an interesting year for both

N4WAH4925d ago (Edited 4925d ago )

My opinion on motion controllers is I personally am intrigued but will not run out and purchase one. If I did it would be Move. No question about it.

Why?
For me personally, gaming is about accuracy, complexity and immersion. Without a controller gaming (again for me) sorely lacks immersion. I am all about the immerision. That is why I have a big collection of perphials and spend a lot of time and money making stands and cockpits to use them properly. Simply going through the "motions" doesn't do it for me and I have tried them all.

I own a Wii (rarely use it), PS3 and 360's (gamed more on 360 than the PS3 and way more than the Wii this gen), and have friends that own Move and Kinect. I have tried them all and Move is the best fit for me. Core gamer.

I tried but I can not get into Kinect. If anything I came away feeling disconnected. It literally felt like I was just going through the motions and those motions don't even have to be close to accurate to advance in most of the games I tried on it.

Kevin ButIer4924d ago

Sony managed to stop Kinect's momentum and didnt neglect its hardcore library...

Thats what I call -Multitasking-

Zeevious4924d ago (Edited 4924d ago )

Except why is this "library list" missing so many entires?

Where's Tumble for instance, an amazing and well rated MOVE ONLY puzzle game? I bought this after trying the demo and it's a truly original title.

Resident Evil, Hustle Kings, Heavy Rain, Pain, MAG, Tiger Woods PGA 11-Hotel Experience...Etc...all updated or released as Move Games, but conveniently left out of the list?

Oddly, Eyepet that WAS patched for Move is included.
So if you are including one game patched for move...and not all, how can the rest of your "comparison" be considered valid?

How exactly is that fair IGN?
This list and comparison is a lie.

There are more excellent Move games than reported...and the excuse to leave them off under the fake veil of "release titles" -- Because there simply are none on the other console is so wrong it invalidates the entire comparison.

They both have interesting lineups, but picking and choosing which motion games you include, then trying to say one motion controller has more games than the other...makes the comparison a joke.

SpinalRemains1384922d ago

Then why is 360 in last place? I think you're confused. PS3 sold and sells more consoles than the 360. Therefore, the PS3 is beating the 360.

That and the fact that SONY has no plans of abandoning its current audience with baby games like Kinect is doing. No, they support who's made them the console king.

WildArmed4925d ago

Just bcoz games like MAG and Heavy Rain where already out doesn't mean you don't count 'em as part of the move library.

I love how they ditched many games that support MOVE (RE5 to name another).

Sony has been saying Move is an alternate way to play games.. not to replace DS3.
If you are going to treat it as a new way to play games and ONLY look at games that use MOVE ONLY.. then i think you got the point of Move wrong.

MNicholas4925d ago (Edited 4925d ago )

The problem with Move is the Wii.

People are so used to standing or sitting in one place and just flicking their wrist.

That won't work with Move.

With Move you actually have to move and make a precise movement which is then replicated on screen.

Kinect is a mess and isn't really worth the bother. Developers are already trying to find ways around the low resolution capture.

The Wii is still the one most accessible for grandma because she can sit in one place and flick her wrist.

frostypants4925d ago

Want to play real games? Move.

Want to plug holes in glass, kick balls, punch balls, dance, and hold your hands up like you're a hitchhiker? Get that thing that costs $150 and requires the giant living space.

JacobIsHollywood4925d ago

You can do all that with Move too...but you're not confined to it. That's what I love about Move. You can play Tumble or Singstar +Dance...and then go for Heavy Rain, Sports Champions, or MAG.

You don't have to settle for just one option. That's what Sony's been saying this entire generation.

Ju4925d ago

Tumble and Echochrome2 is not even on that list. What a shame.

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog846d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry916846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

846d ago
CrimsonWing69846d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming846d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer79845d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember845d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog846d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop845d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic845d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop845d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Rhythmattic844d ago (Edited 844d ago )

Porky
"You're acting like it would take months"
Sometimes it could.. FFS.. 'Strya here...
Best turnaround I reckon was 2-3 weeks.....
Either way, My mates experiences still exist.. So Sorry, no point trying to earn Xbox Achievements when it doesn't feature in what was a situation you never dealt with,,,,
3 of my friends would disagree (overall, 10 extra Xboxes purchased)
Regardless.. MS sold a lot of 360's that was due to this reason.. That is sales. Fact

"none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about."
Headline says HELLO !
Oh and "Sadly, not all hardware is created equal," that's enough to pass this on without taking your article bias into consideration.....
As for the rest.... Ok.. But you've actually gone out of your way to give MS a Pass... Fap on.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 844d ago
Aloymetal845d ago (Edited 845d ago )

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic845d ago (Edited 845d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

lonewolf10846d ago

Lol I had the Atari Jaguar, surprised its "competition" the 3DO isn't on the list too, both as "popular" as each other.

SullysCigar846d ago

Lol same. Played the crap out of Aliens Vs Predator and Tempest 2000 .... aaand that's about it really!!

lonewolf10846d ago

Sad but true that was pretty much it.

Kurt Russell846d ago

Agreed, I never actually saw a 3DO make it to retailers in the UK. At least the Atari Jaguar was sold for around 6 months.

lonewolf10845d ago

It made it to some my brother got one, fared just as well as the Jaguar so most probably hard to find in general.

darthv72846d ago

3do had way better games. Jaguar not so much. Neo Geo sold less than both and yet isnt considered a failure. Go figure.

LWOGaming846d ago

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

Magog846d ago

The sales model was awful. They should have teamed with an existing player to allow for local and cloud access to games or a gaming subscription service.

LWOGaming845d ago

It was a strange mess from such a huge company, as I said, as a system it works really well but without gamers it’s nothing. Such a waste,

LWOGaming846d ago

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s Nintendo Wii U. Undercooked, undersold and just an unholy mess. The thing is with any of these failures is to learn from them and thankfully both Nintendo and Xbox did just that to the benefit of gamers everywhere.
