Top 8 'Game of the Year' Worthy Titles

NextGN writes: "It’s hard to believe that we nearing the end to yet another amazing year of gaming. 2010 had a strong line-up for both consoles and that makes it just that much harder to pick the winner. Some may say it’s far too soon to even consider Game of The Year for 2010 – but is it really?"

May I make a suggestion? Splinter Cell: Conviction?

Yi-Long4910d ago

... from not REALLY being the Splinter Cell game the fans were hoping for, and thus maybe not being judged fairly on it's own merits.

It strayed a bit too far from the gameplay of the first (great) games, which scared/pissed of a lot of fans.

That doesn't mean it's a bad game....but it means that for many people it just wasn't a very good SPLINTER CELL game.

BrownRanger4910d ago

What's a Splinter Cell game without stealth. It's like a first person shooter with no crosshair. :(

soundslike4910d ago

If that game came out 5 years ago, as any game not just splinter cell, it would have been trashed by reviewers and gamers alike.

There is nothing redeemable about that game except for the reviewers who got paid to convince people it was.

JeffGUNZ4909d ago

Actually the game was great, I really like the mark and execute system. Still, I don't think it's game of the year quality.

KillerCucumber4910d ago

Good list. Big fan of Mass Effect 2.

FiLTHY ESKiMO4910d ago

One of my personal favorites, too!

nupes984902d ago

Mass Effect 2 would be my vote as well. Though there were a lot of great games

Yi-Long4910d ago

... and enjoyed it, but TBH I didn't think it was as great as some made it out to be.. for several reasons.

I felt like some stuff was 'missing', like when you capture horses in the wild, you couldn't bring them in to make some money by selling them, or 'store' them in your 'garage' or something.

Also, I would have liked to have been able to bull-ride as well.

Also, story-wise I occasionally had problems caring about John and his story, some stuff obviously just felt stupid, and the whole 3rd part seemed pretty short.

There were just a bunch of little tiny things that occasionally bothered me, or just didn't interest me.

Like I said, I DID enjoy it. At times I even enjoyed it ALOT. And it was original and did things many of us thought wouldn't work in the western setting. So it's definitely in my top 5 list of games of the year...

... but I felt it could have been a bit better in some area's.

FiLTHY ESKiMO4910d ago

Yeah. A little bit too linear for me. Also, I didn't like the fact that you couldn't do the fun activities like herding cows and stuff like that once the main story was over.

George Sears4910d ago (Edited 4910d ago )

I think you guys are being a bit to nitpick on such miniscule things. First of all, if you want to cow herd (which was interesting at first but I believe it would be pretty lame and bland if you would do it a lot) you can either just repeat one of the missions or just play co op missions online.

Second, you cant "store horses in your garage" because there already is a better system. Basically, once you capture the horse you can actually purchase one yourself and have the breed for keeps. Forever. If you want to "sell it" then you can just kill it and sell it for parts. But from what I know, John as a character, isn't a salesperson. You can even tell how much he despised selling stuff thanks to West Dickens.

Something like bull rides would had been nice but seriously, nit picking on things that aren't added on a pretty complete game is a bit arrogant IMO.

If you wan't to experience riding bulls (hell even buffalos or donkey zebras if your hearts desire) then you can try online if you so desire.

As for the story goes, I believe it was top notch from beginning to end. I didn't see nothing wrong at all with the story and the side missions were pretty interesting as well.

Definitely, the best game I have played so far in 2010.

frostypants4909d ago

Agreed.

I also felt like a lot of the story was filler. A lot of the Mexico stuff just felt contrived and off-key.

This article brought a tear to my eye. Another year, almost over. :O

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming17d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long17d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple10117d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor17d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6917d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno17d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave23d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan23d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Rockstar still strying to make GTA plus work
Should be $6 for the rdr game on sale not 6 bucks for a months playtime

Exvalos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I hear ya, 49.99 or whatever the price on that game is, is a bit stiff seeing as it's just a port.

anast31d ago

Why would anyone rent this game?

jznrpg31d ago

One of my favorite games from PS3 generation. I have the remaster as there was a buy 2 get 1 free deal a while back but the price they are charging for the port is way too high although not surprising at all.
