Review: GoldenEye 007 – Some Classics Are Best Left Untouched

GoldenEye is a name that most games not only know very well, but love. It was a cult classic back in the days of the Nintendo 64, and was probably the single best movie to video game adaptations ever. It’s a game that most gamers grew up playing with friends and the name alone comes attached with great memories and fun times.

What are you talking about? The game is updated. Instead of a watch, Bond has a smart phone. The time in the plot is modern day, and other plot changes and level pieces have been altered.

To be honest I didn't like the game. I agree with him. Some people just need to understand that people have different points of views on games. It was a bit harsh, but I could see why.

Thank god I don't have a Wii and would have been tempted to buy this because they slapped GoldenEye on the game. If they decided to make a new story and re-write it, why call it GoldenEye? I mean when I think GoldenEye, I don't think of this game.

I am glad someone decided to give this a negative score for the sole reason that this is NOT GoldenEye. They should have just called this BloodStone like the PS3 and 360 version.

But this is Goldeneye, people seem to forget that the game isn't the original source. It takes the story of the movie and updates it, but it is still the same story. It hits all the major beats of the movie pretty well. Even throwing in nods to dialog with an updated twist like when he meets Xenia at Valentin's club and remarks about the counterfeit vodka label.

I love how the Wii owners stating that this game is great, are getting so many disagrees yet no replies. This tells me than none of you Wii-haters have actually played the game.

Well I've played it, and the game is simply epic. It's very polished: The voice-acting, graphics, controls, AI, gameplay, level design, everything is spot on. Split-screen is simply a blast. The online isn't really deep, but it does have a neice XP progression system and some of the funnest game modes I've ever played.

Heck, scratch what I just said, let's look at this from a logical standpoint. A 2/5 game is nearly unplayable. Back controls, graphics, and lack lasting appeal are what describes 2/5. Now, does this game sound like that at all? No.

I'd advise all of you to play the game instead of blindly judging it.

I think too many people are blinded by their devotion to a 13 year old game. I won't dare compare the two, but will say that this stays extremely true to the spirit of Goldeneye, and isn't just Goldeneye in name.

Exactly, easily the best fps on the Wii and one of the best fps' this gen. The singplayer campaign is as you said, epic. And the stealth tactics are well implemented.

I really don't know what else to say, but it does seem to me that some folks are upset the game is exclusive to Wii. Which is hilarious.

But part of the reason why I'm scarce around here as of late is because of nonsense like this review, as well as ridiculous comments trying to downplay how good this game is. If it was too similar to the original they'd say "its the same game with just a new coat of paint, wahhh" Which ironically enough, I could apply that complaint to damn near every HD game released this gen as a sequel to last gen (RE5, DMC4, GOW3, etc lol)

My favourite tho is when a really good game comes out i always read comments like "well im not buying a wii for just one game". I see these comments all the time..surely they would realize by now there are many great games on the system.

I keep telling people, imagine they re-released Halo: Combat Evolved in this same fashion? Wouldn't you compare it to the original? Why is it that since it's re-done we should give it a shot at being something new?

But that seems to be the only thing this reviewer didn't like. Reviews are suppose to be able to help us, the consumer, not for the reviewer to strut around their personal taste and expectations.

With this review, its hard to even know for sure whether or not he played the game as all he talks about is how its not the original. I don't remember the original all that well, nor do I have access to my N64, is this new Goldeneye a good game on its own or not?

Sure, if they remade Halo in this kind of fashion we will definitely have to compare it the original, but what if its still a good game? Even if not as good as the original, does that mean the remake has the either surpass the original or just fail? Those are some pretty big extremes and really just plain unfair to the developers.

It may well be a good game, but GoldenEye it is not.

It's Call of Duty with a Bond licence slapped on it and uses a totally unrelated movie title to try and appeal to nostalgia, but it backfired by not being GoldenEye.
