In Milan, at the Central Station, a flash mob has morphed some passengers into dancers in a Just Dance 2 related event.
MyGaming: "We all secretly love a number of games we’d never tell anyone else about, games that make us seem like simpletons, suckers or sellouts.
They’re games that are way below our age group, games we know are critical failures, games that are embarrassing to play in a group or that the community despise in general.
Nevertheless, we play them, and we enjoy them too – when no one is looking of course.
These are the games most often spoken about in hushed tones by so many of us"
I'm not so much ashamed for having played SingStar as I am sorry for the people that were listening to it.
And Lego games are fun. No need to be ashamed for playing them imo.
SingStar was one of our party games. We usually wound up competing boys against girls. Us boys always won.
Karaoke American Idol is much better than singstar... Great drunken party game :-) and I enjoyed lollipop chainsaw as well lol!
Definitely no shame in Lego games.
As for just dance and other similar gams, party games are super fun... As long as you aren't playing alone :P
Plants vs Zombies GW and Splatoon - I am 44, I don't tell anyone that I play these. Both are great games.
The only one I felt ashamed of owning, off the top of my head, was TMNT: Smash Up.
I got rid of it not long afterwards, though, so I'm not sure that counts...
I guess maybe Child of Light?
I love the story and combat, but Ubisoft hasn't really done much in the last 3 years to warrant my patronage outside of that game, so I guess I feel a little guilty about giving them money for it when they've burned me so many times before...
It can’t be denied anymore: Just Dance is one of those successes in the previous generation that needs to be acknowledged.
GenGAME writes: "Touted as the most third-party friendly Nintendo platform since the SNES, Wii U had a bunch of third-party games at launch. Sure, most of them were late ports, but as I’ve said before, most gamers (believe it or not) are actually single-console gamers. Opening up a new can of games that Nintendo fans have never had the chance to play should work like a charm, no?
"So why didn’t these games sell on Wii U? Here’s a theory: what if it’s not about Nintendo fans not wanting to play anything that doesn’t come from Nintendo? What if it’s more about Nintendo fans being too smart to be duped by third-parties’ efforts to sell them on the same games that already failed to draw them to other platforms?
"...If developers don’t deliver the kinds of rich play-oriented experiences they crave – and that includes both Nintendo and third parties – they have no problem holding onto their money."
Sure they do. Where do you think Mega Man came from? How about Final Fantasy? Chrono Trigger? Most of the popular Disney games back in the day? Why do you think so many Nintendo fans were lost during the N64 and GameCube eras, and why do you think PlayStation happened to become so huge at the same time? Why is my avatar for FFXII?
The question is: what did all of those games that people went after have in common that modern third-party games lack? They fit in well with the Nintendo audience.
Most of the time said AAA games are terrible ports that underperform compared to other consoles - see: everything AAA port that has ever been released on Wii U.
Nintendo fans are obviously enjoying much better games than that crappy Call of Duty port, and that other mediocre port of Batman Arkham City.
People buy Nintendo for a reason - they are diehard Nintendo fans. If they wanted AAA games from third parties they would buy a PS3 or 360.
Nintendo fans of the past and Nintendo fans today are not the same. I was a fan of Nintendo back then and I'm still a fan of their consoles today. However to me, Nintendo is nothing more than the second or third console. I'm a fan of video games. Couldn't care less what console it's on.
Nintendo fans of today just don't buy third party. There are a lot of hidden gem lists for the Wii floating around. You know why people make those lists, because those people are usually actual gaming fans that buy more than just Mario, Kirby, Metroid, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc. Now there are some Nintendo fans who are console exclusive who do buy more than just Nintendo products, but they're rare. Most Nintendo fans think everything Nintendo releases is gold.
I made mention one time that MonolithSoft was irrelevant to Nintendo fans before they became first party. Go look up sales to Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans and Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier. Both released in the US and both DS games. They sold very poorly. The Wii game they developed sold even worse. But as soon as MonolithSoft was announced as a first party developer and Nintendo announced Xenoblade, everyone was all over them and they immediately became the best RPG developer to Nintendo fans. It's sad. Truly.
cause i already bought said games on the ps3, im not gonna buy the same game twice especially when I buy one copy, i can game share the other copy to my son's ps3. I'm just waiting on a "real" AAA game to buy, and they are bound to come. The best games are usually released around oct/nov. Oh and trust me, if I can't get my hands on a ps4 this year, I'll be buying watch dogs for the WiiU.
Nintendo gamers are "too smart" for anything without Mario in it. Hilarious.
Nintendo fanboys' overzealous reaction in wake of the Wii U taking a dive past launch has been rather pathetic. They'll say anything.
How quickly some people forget about the NES and SNES days, when third party software on Nintendo systems thrived.
I've been thinking about this...it would seem the decision to go cartridge with the N64 is what shifted the balance of power, and Nintendo (more like third parties) never recovered with GameCube.
Realize that the quality of third party games ported to the Nintendo Consoles is abysmal now compared to what it once was. Do you think any Nintendo fan really gives a shit about a Call of Duty game that came out several months prior? Or how about a Batman game that came out a year ago? They really don't care about those.
@ buff1044
Exactly right. N64 went cartridge because Nintendo and Sony dropped their partnership building SNES CD. Sony then developed their own machine and so did Nintendo.History.
Yeah you here that Rockstar??! We don't want GTA5!!
Lets make a petition to make sure there is no gta5 wiiU port! Whos with me?! Nintendo fans rise up!!
Now is the time!
/s
I would love GTA on Wii U. I love my wiinu but I also like thee consoles but third parties are maning lazy guts who should not be surprised when they put experimental games (mad world) crap ports and dumb downed versions of games like dead space out there.
A bad game and lazy work will always show.
Why would a Nintendo fan want GTAV?
.
Because they had such great time playing GTA III, VC, San Andraeas & IV on previous Nintendo systems?..Oh wait that never happened.
.
Nintendo fans truly live in neverland. And they luv themselves some port begging.
Nintendo fans were the ones that made MegaMan, Castlevania, Contra, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, etc popular in the first place.
With FF and MGS they just established them in the gaming industry but the Playstation with Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 is what made them more popular then they were
No, actually all those franchises hit their high points on Playstation, truth ouch : (
It wasn't Nintendo fans, it was gaming fans who made those series popular. I've always went with the system that had the most games that appeal to me. Those titles you mention are 3rd party games, and when the 3rd parties moved away from Nintendo, I moved with them, just like so many others. So again, it's gaming fans, not Nintendo fans that made those series what they are. Brand loyalty can kiss my ass.
yeah, and that is why all of those franchises moved to Playstation and beyond.
But left nintendo.
@Jobesy
Bubble up because I agree entirely. It wouldn't matter what console those games were on, they'd still be great games. Nintendo didn't make them good games, they just happened to be on a Nintendo console.
By the way. There's a lot of people who don't know how monopolistic of a company Nintendo was back then. Here's some truth behind Nintendo way back then and why a lot of third parties abandoned them when the Playstation started to do well.
Back then, Nintendo had an iron grip on console developers and threatened them that if they were to develop a game on another console they wouldn't allow their games to be published on the NES or SNES. With how well the NES and SNES sold, they were basically saying if you turn your back on us, you're screwed.
You might make an argument, but Capcom games and other developer games are on the Genesis and Sega Master System. Most of them were arcade titles licensed then ported by Sega themselves.
You guys think EA and Activision are bad? I think this practice Nintendo had in the 80s and 90s was worse than anything those two publishers have done to the industry. I still like Nintendo games and Nintendo consoles, as I'm a gaming fan, but I've never had respect for Nintendo after finding out about this during the 32/64bit era and why Nintendo lost most of its third party support.
If it wasn't for Playstation, how well it sold when it released and being a powerful console with disc format, developers may have never had the courage to get out from under Nintendo. It's only for the reason that the Playstation sold well that developers knew they could be profitable elsewhere, and is now the reason why most games are multiconsole since developers aren't forcibly tied down to one specific console.
You didn't have to necessarily be a "Nintendo fan" to play those games.
The companies that developed the games were the ones that made the games popular. FF and Metal Gear didn't become the huge success they are today until the PS1.
They dont care about bad ones like CoD because they are smart but want good ones like Rayman Legends.
Let's see if that ends up even being true when they will post Rayman legends' sales number .
I'm of the opinions that bare some exceptions , many nintendo fans dont put their money where their mouth is and stick with the safe and familiar nintendo .
For all the anger about 3rd party support every new nintendo console beyond the snes , and pretense of caring about gameplay and quality moreso than gamers from other platforms , they drop the ball as much , if not more , on many ignored gaming gems .
Mind you the same can be said everywhere , especially for some ps3 fans constantly bragging about exclusives they dont support , but it's a recurring problem imo at nintendo's camp .
All the more reason for Nintendo to stop making hardware and start making software for the other consoles. When the only reason people buy your console is to play your exclusive games, there is no reason to be making consoles. More money could be made from allowing those games to be made on other platforms.
I never said the "Nintendo-Only" people would agree, but that does not mean it is not a smart business decision on their end. Could you imagine how many copies the next mario would sell if it were available on all systems? NSMB on everything from your phone, tablet, laptop/PC/steam/etc, handheld, to your console? Nintendo would laugh all the way to the bank. These are game franchises that EVERYONE knows and identifies with, even those who may not own a Nintendo console or even a console at all. N going third party would open those games up to all those people, and sales would skyrocket.
Not looking at this from a gamer perspective, but more from a business perspective.
For starters you dont know if those people would still be around once they pull a sega . Especially if they start believing the quality of those games will drop once they becomes a multiplatform publisher
Sonic might still be a constant big seller , but it's a far cry from their hardware maker era .
I think it's silly to assume that Sega stopped making games as good as they used to because they stopped making hardware. You are essentially trying to say that by not focusing on hardware at all, and instead focusing on software only, Nintnedo's software will somehow become lower quality as a result of this extra attention... Or that the innovation we've come to know and love will be affected by the fact that they are no longer limited to working with one device.
Nintendo has never needed it's hardware. Think about it, had they not released Wii, but released Wiimote and Wiimote enabled games instead for the other consoles, they would have likely sold more. Same as Wii U. Release the screen controller with a usb adapter for 360 and PS3, support it with screen-controller enabled games using fan favorite franchises, and profits soar. The last 2 Nintendo consoles have been centered around their input devices. If Nintendo started just making controllers and games to work with those controllers, but did not limit the gamer to what system they owned in order to be able to enjoy that content, Nintendo would enjoy the install base of every console buying it's controllers and games. That, in addition to not having to have anywhere near as much money invested into the R&D and launch of consoles, should lead to far higher profits than they have now.
Just my opinion. I know it's controversial, but the fact that they have focused on the controller for many of their previous consoles (N64, Wii, WiiU, etc. all relied heavily on their controllers to sell the system), and many of their gamer fans admit they buy those consoles for the games rather than the hardware, makes me feel that it would be their best option financially. Put all effort into making those games, developing new franchises, and quit worrying about hardware. Find ways to innovate other hardware with new controllers and games, and enjoy the savings and added profit.
i buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games and some japanese exclusives, no more no less.
I'm with you on that. Japanese developers always start their ideas with a controller in hand first and I feel western devs always start with the graphics engine and just shoehorn bland gameplay into the mix. Platformers and fighters almost always play like crap by western devs compare to Japanese devs
Nintendo fans don't like to play masculine games...they prefer to play a game with a princess but unfortunately she is always in another castle.
If most Nintendo fans only buy first party why should Nintendo stay in the hardware game? Seems to me that they would make a killing as a third party dev.
Let nintendo fans keep telling themselves that. I was once a die hard fan.. But no 3rd parties games then I'm moving on.
@NYC_Gamer That's a lie! Because I know a lot of Nintendo gamers asking for 3rd party software, so they won't have to buy 2 consoles. But if developers are going to give us crappy ports with missing features why should we buy them. Give me a good port & I'll buy it. I buy both 1st & 3rd party games on my Wii U. I also own a PS3, and it's actually more for exclusives. But if I can get a 3rd party game that's not on the Wii U I'll get it on my PS3, or a port without features on Wii U then I'll have to be forced to buy the 3rd party game on PS3. On an end note.. GTA V is a must buy and I would absolutely love it on the Wii U.
Personally, as a Nintendo gamer the only third party games I've bought over the years are mostly capcom games and sometimes namco or konami. There are a few oddball games from treasure or other exclusives that I've picked up but at least 80% of the games I've bought are Nintendo produced or published so you are right to some extent. I think on the Japanese front Nintendo does have quite a bit of third party support and I will welcome platinum games (wonderful 101) with open arms. I just don't really care for games like batman, assassins creed or COD and I've played all of them albeit briefly on my brothers Xbox but they just don't have a strong hook to them.
I'm a nintendo fan and i care about it alot, but of course i wouldn't buy a game like Mass Effect 3, when i can already play it along with the other two titles in the franchise, on my PC or PS3.
I think the bad sales are due to guys like me, and as the article says, because there are single-console owners that just weren't interested in third party titles.
you are right, as a nintendo fan i don't care about third parties on the wiiu, but as a sony fan i also don't care about third parties on ps3/ps4, i have my pc to play the superior version of third party games, a console is only as good as its exclusives, and nintendo delivers the strongest exclusives. especially now that Kojima and insomniac has gone third party.
why 3rd party games on the wii u failed is that they are being sent out to die cause the ports a rushed and they have been on other systems are a while and don't even get me start on why EA games failed on the wii u madden and fifa were missing features and mass effect 3 on the wii u came out just a couple weeks after the trilogy came out on the other platforms but zombiu was one the best selling games at launch and i imagine monster hunter will sale decently
Well that is one way to spin it.Just sounds like another excuse to me.So what was the explanation for them not buying the third party games that were exclusive to their Wii like Madworld,No More Heroes, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Red Steel and Conduit? Were they too 'smart' for those too?
Do you really think any of those games were ever "huge seller" material? Maybe Red Steel... but notice that games like No More Heroes didn't do too well even on other platforms (<0.25m on PS3, IIRC, vs. ~0.5m on Wii)
Meanwhile, games that ARE good fits for Wii like RE4: Wii Edition and Okami appear to have sold above expectations despite being old ports.
They weren't huge sellers because Wii owners didn't buy them. I mean really did anyone really honestly think that Black Ops was going to sell well on the Wii U? Since when do Nintendo fans rush for anything as much as they do the Nintendo staples? It has nothing to do with being smart. It's just how modern Nintendo fans are. It's the same reason why Rayman isn't exclusive on the Wii U and why Bayonetta 2 isn't going to break the bank on it.Compared to the sales of a new Zelda, Pokemon and Mario game they don't have a chance. And Okami didn't exactly break the bank either. Why? Because it wasn't Zelda.
No More Heroes is Suda 51's greatest hit and still his best selling "single"(not counting other platforms sells) game to date.
Madworld, made a profit, it just wasn't immediate. It sold a lot over time and so did Red Steel 2. It also made a profit in the end.
The Conduit is the only game on your list that didn't do well on the Wii and it was far from mature or good.
Wii games only needed around 200-300k to make a profit because they cost no where near as much to make as 360/PS3 games which were a failure if they didn't break 1 mil.
Get your facts straight.
What are you talking about with No More Heroes didn't do to well? That game is Grasshopper Manufacturer's best selling single game(not counting other platform sells) ever.
On the other hands, Shadows of the Damned flopped heavily on the PS3/360 in comparison.
Comparing numbers without context tells a very twisted story.
Alot of those games started on nintendo mega man was 1987 only on nintendo so some not all were exclusive to nintendo at one point.
I never said the first MG was never on MSX... Was it as popular on that system than on NES?
Maybe not, but there is no denying that MGS and FF were WAAAAAAAAAAAAY more popular on Playstation platforms than any Nintendo system breh.
Im pretty sure about 90% of the people that played MGS when it came out thought it was the first in the series. I know I did.
It would have been the same with Final Fantasy 7 if it werent for the 7 in the title.
I play a lot of games as a kid, but I had never heard of either of these franchises until PlayStation.
It's hard to tell since there are no third-party games to buy at the moment to begin with.
"most gamers (believe it or not) are actually single-console gamers."
Unless someone can prove that to me, i find it very hard to believe.
The linked article (that quote is actually a link in the article) cites a 2012 study. Multi-platform owners were at 17% in 2009, 24% in 2011.
Why would it be hard to believe that *most* people have one system? A lot of people only rent or buy used games. Why would it be surprising that they don't or can't own multiple platforms?
I have a different article that says 49% of households have gaming console and they averaged at least 2 consoles. Also looking that link from the article it looks like it is saying 17% play on one type of device (console,pc, mobile) rather than specifying if they actually play on one console. So agree to disagree on that based on data.
http://www.polygon.com/2012...
The main reason I would not be surprised to find that most people are single console is because people are constantly back and forth about why their console is better. Though I have always assumed it was a vocal minority, and most people who do have multiple consoles aren't on here because they are having too much fun with their mass selection of games to really give a crap.
Oh so like all those Wii owners are to smart to run out and buy the Wii U.
Exactly? Even Nintendo has sucked at making good games for the Nintendo audience on Wii U.
@ ALEX PLANT (the Author)
Good read- not because of the Butter-Up...
BUT
because you brought something different to the gaming dialogue.
seems like hes read some of my n4g comments and done some extra research to prove my points true. we arent suckers.
You say you're not suckers, but when I look at ignored gems like Fragile Dreams, I wonder as to the veracity of that statement.
I'd never heard of Fragile Dreams until I saw your post. Now metacritic isn't the be all and end all when it comes to games, but it does have a 67 rating, which tells me it's not something that wowed too many people.
Maybe that's why I never heard of it.
Though who seriously buys a Nintendo console now a days for third party gamed. There's only 3 reason most core gamers get it: 1) Mario, 2) Zelda , 3)Smash Bros. Everything else is just icing on a cake.
The article makes some good points. Nintendo had a lot of help on their earlier consoles from companies who wanted to do *new* things. For years! Square and Enix separately explored just about everything you could do with an RPG on the SNES, for instance! Now, graphics/art budgets are insane due to the demand placed on high-poly AAA games, and companies know it's a risk to make something. Too big of a risk. They do things like target demographic groups and give them what they think they want. That spark, that creativity, it no longer thrives in the halls of Capcom, Activision, EA, Ubisoft, any of them. Even Ancel's making Rayman annualized sequels at this point.
But there are some great examples of the opposite. Demon's Souls was a third party game, for instance - Sony just agreed to publish it in a region or two before Atlus scooped it up. Dark Souls is my favorite game on any current-gen console, one of my "of all times." To me, it's the Megaman 2 and 3 of this generation - a huge improvement on a game which took a lot of risks.
This market isn't ready for a new generation of consoles, methinks. But the indie developers are ready for easier-to-use engines, cheap distribution methods, and fair business models outside of those AAA companies' doors. Before long, we're going to be launch headlong into much bigger games from auteurs. I think it may be nice.
The fact the title itself doesn't even makes sense, makes me think the article isn't worth a read either...
And 3rd party studios are too smart to develop games for Nintendo, so its win-win.
Nintendo "gamers" I know 1. Those who never actually use it and let it colect dust for years 2. Parents who bought the cheapest possible console for young kids who can play nothing better than wave your arms around or Mario.
So, that rules out typical 3rd party genres such as mature single-player games (survival horror, adventure, or fighting games) or immersive online shooters, or realistic racing games. All that is left, which a Nintendo "gamer" might be interested is the same old Zelda and Mario.
I wish Nintendo didn't go all casual in the first place..Playstation will always be my first choice (cause their exclusive games appeal more to me) but I will always respect Nintendo for helping this Hobby i love grow in to this juggernaut of an indusry it is today.
"The problem is that the third parties of today aren’t correctly responding to the needs and wants of Nintendo’s market. They incorrectly measured Wii’s success as being owed to “casual gamers,” and that those “casual gamers” can only play easy games that don’t use buttons. That is, they assumed that “casuals” are dumb and so the games they present to casuals should also be dumb"
I think it goes deeper than that because even non casual games still don't do as well as on other consoles. Lets look at prime example.
Tales of graces sold 143k first week in Japan on the Wii and at that point there were 10 million wii's in Japan compared to around 5 million PS3's.
The following year Tales of Graces f was released on the PS3 and it sold 215K first week.
Same game but the PS3 version had some extras. It wasn't a casual or dumbed down game. It was a proper JRPG and it sold a lot less even though the wii's userbase was almost twice of the PS3's at the time.
Look at the Xenoblade, a first party title that many claim to be the best RPG of the gen and that only sold 160K in Japan which is a fraction of what a Mario game will sell.
The 360 and PS3 have established themselves as the home for 3rd party tiles while Nintendo have established their console as the Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc.. machine which is why third party and even some of their first party titles struggle.
What they need to do in my opinion is use the positive reception from the X game and promote it hard and show they can do more than just Mario and co. I hear so many fans saying they can't wait for the next smash or mario kart or Zelda. It's just becoming too predictable.
There's also the disadvantage of less power but that's another argument
give me a series of AAA third party titles exclusive to wii and I will buy them. I will not buy games at full price I bought months or a year before on another console just for a few extra features.
What?... I'll buy good third party software... I bought zombiu and enjoyed it. Of course, that may not be AAA title...
Well this is generalization to the max.
I AM interested in third-party games. A number of up-coming Wii U games that I have on my radar are third-party.
I'm a one-console gamer because my game life revolves around what my parents are willing to spend and when they are willing to spend it. Later down the line, hopefully I'll accquire a PS4 or 720, which ever one I'm most interested in - but certainly not as quickly as I got my Wii U. Simply because I know my dad won't throw down another $400-$500 in such a short space of time, for a game console.
And even for gamers who aren't in the same parent-based boat, their wallets probably aren't so healthy either. Gaming is a lot to invest in. With such a lousy economy, it's harder than ever.
No. I think the stupid ones are the ones buying a Wii U and expecting 3rd party support. It's not going to happen.
or... maybe they're not single console gamers, and have already played the AAA third-party games on their other consoles.
Nintendo fans may have made many franchises big, but they haven't treated 3rd party exclusives very well and vice verse for a long time. Its the reason why developers don't take Nintendo consoles seriously and make for them.
That ship sailed years ago and it's not an argument point anymore. Final Fantasy went to Playstation, the Blue Bomber had 2 releases but for all consoles, Metal Gear Solid is on every system Except Nintendo HOME consoles.
When Nintendo releases a console, the discussion basically goes as followed: When will we see Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, etc? And most Nintendo fans are ok with that, but that's why I didn't even give 2 looks at the WiiU.
metal gear solid on gamecube says hello, ok it was 9 years ago but you made it sound like nintendo have never had metal gear solid, also people forget that nintendo has the 3ds with more 3rd party support than vita, nintendo is more than just wii. i buy third party on nintendo i didnt get ac3 or cod on my ps3 coz i got it on wii u, also watch dogs im getting on wii u even though im getting a ps4 on launch, infamous is only ps4 game im currently interested in.
The industry is a little silly. We have been watching these ports for a while. It is true they where not even fun enough to warrent a Xbox or ps purchase.
EA is killing there own franchises on purpose to hurt nintendo for not making them another 3do.
It's going to be curious to see if graphics or game play sells games after E3.
Lots of people are waiting to buy a wiiu since they want to see what ms and Sony are offering. Many may wait of the other systems to become affordable. Who knows, yet game play sells on Nintendo consoles.
Nintendo gamers like games like gradius, tmnt arcade, secret of mana, chrono trigger, killer instinct, master blaster, ff3, ng3, great side scrollers with action like battle toads! With a twist like using today's technology.
The problem is the current youth of gaming wants 3d free roaming story based gaming. None of that insures fun yet costs lots of money to make. This thinking killed sega and it's killing other 3rd parties now.
Plus visual hype does not sell to an older crowd aka Nintendo gamers who owned a Nes and problably have a nice pc setup.
Personally i hope 3rd parties stop making excuses and start making games. Don't half ass on the Nintendo consoles and then say, "Oh, look Nintendo users don't like a or b, they like C. BS, As a consumer and gamer, I like good games, period. Not old ports, watered down ports or imitationNintendo games. I buy good games.
Good article but I think your logic isn't base on sound judgement. This article gives the impression Nintendo fans are too smart for everyone else and have an elitist attitude. Everyone wants good quality games.
What's the sales number of N64's or Gamecube console. That to me would be a good indicator of about how many hardcore Nintendo fans there really are out there or maybe less.
Look at the sales of the WII U and it launch with Nintendo land and New Super Mario Bros.
The fact is the real reason majority of gamers are draw to a console can be for a lot of different reasons. There's 1st and 3rd party support, innovation of the console, the "Hot" item to have, price, brand royalty, family friendly games, etc.
These other gamers are really the ones that decide who's console or all three of them, are going to be hugely successful or not.
in all honesty, the only reason i didn't buy many 3rd party games for the Wii was not because i was too "smart" to get them, but there just weren't that many for the Wii that were not shovelware. yes, it's me a nintendo fan, and I admit that Wii had plenty of shovelwares.
however I can't say otherwise for their other platforms coz I equally enjoyed 3rd party softwares from the NES to the GameCube (in fact, I have more 3rd party software for them compared to 1st party). it was only the Wii when most AAA 3rd party games didn't come for it.
so frankly, I just hope that more 3rd parties will come to the Wii U. coz I do know that most Nintendo fans are simply waiting for the 3rd parties to support the Wii U. and most nintendo gamers are also multiplatform gamers who knows how to appreciate what each console can offer, instead of joining the pissing contest.
so neither nintendo or their fans care about third party support.
well ain't that just dandy. i guess they can all sink on the same ship together.
At least the article is more complimentary than the usual bait articles about the Wii U, but why are Wii U owners always referred to like they're some amorphous hive-mind?
I doubt many Wii U owners just blindly buy everything published by Nintendo, but the attention to detail that Nintendo puts into it's products means that 3rd party publishers need to stand out on Nintendo platforms. Take the Wii for example, pretty much every genre you can name had a Nintendo game in that niche - sport, platformer, party game, racer, FPS, RPG... Each one highly polished, if at times a little shallow - it makes publishing on Nintendo platforms riskier because you have a 500lb Gorilla (sometimes literally) focussing exclusively on that platform.
This has always scared publishers. When I started in this industry every one wanted to be the man who made Mario. Now they want you to feel some half ass art school feeling when you play.
The problem is company's had a chance to make better games than nintendo until the graphics arm race started. Then people started hiring "artist" instead of game makers.
We have an industry full of non game makers now. I have to blame Sony and square for that. Most movie talent are not trained to make great games and are more about visuals. Ms is to blame for perfecting it on the pc side.
Also marketing is way too important now. Sony gamers truely believe it is ok to have a horrible game play experience yet with the right marketing every one will sloop it up. I constantly here if we only had more marketing, no one says go fix your damn game or at least make it fun. Nintendo did with ninja gaiden on the wiiu and now you see why high and mighty developers will hate nintendo, it is purely a pride issue.
Look at the smash clone and the mkart clone, they took out what the media didn't want and they both did horrible. You know there is a reason why the media doesn't make games because they don't listen to their customers. A few vocal blogs or forum post and suddenly they know these gamers.
It never occurred to them we have overlap of casuals, younger gamers vs old and skilled verses show me a picture picture and let me win now.
It is very possible lots of gamers fell for hype from certain companies, ms Sony. Notice how Sony gamers kept buying a broken Skyrim? It's ok to buy the other next gen system and wait on games yet not other systems?
Also most nintendo gamers remember acclaim(sp) which is I believe EA now lol boy did they suck. Some of these publisher are just going for the easily impressed visual gamers and then using investment tactics to keep you spending aka you pay a hell of a lot of money now you better find your own fun sorry.
I really think devs may be incapable of gaining a fanbase with out fake hype from the media due to subpar development or lack of funds. The simple fact that the industry believes they can't make good games on the wiiu means they will get ate alive by the bigger publishers who will out spend them.
Sums up my feelings on the games industry at the moment.
I think you nailed it on the head as to why I was never a fan of Sony's gaming contributions. They seem more interested in cinematic experiences rather than gaming experiences.
If people wonder why PC gaming seems to be 'coming back' look no further than this past gens Jr. PC line ie PS3/360. Many gamers are realizing that the 'consoles' from Sony and M$ are just Jr. PC's, why watch JV sports when you can watch Varsity?
I'm sick of games that play themselves. I'm sick of quick time events, cut scenes all that bloated crap. Give me a game!
Fortunately, the days of hiding behind flash are coming to a head. People are already wondering where the incentive is for next gen, is it just prettier graphics in games that play the same way otherwise?
People are also beginning to see that nearly every launch title for next gen consoles will also be released on 7th gen consoles. I just hope folks don't become hypocrites; Meaning, the knock on Wii U was that their launch titles were just ports or 360/PS3 games..Well what happens when PS4 launches with Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed 4 ect?
I don't think people realize what's really going on right now. Also what happens if these games on PS4/720 cost $69.99, What about the price of these consoles? Should be interesting times come E3 into Holiday 2013.
@The title and that is why nintendo lost alot of marketshare to sony(ps1) and later to ms consoles. Nes and snes had killer 3rd party support it flatlined on the 64.
Nintendo fans in general don't give a shit about 3rd party games, the wii had a decent effort(considering the hardware) by 3rd partys trying to bring unique games to it.
Almost all of them did horrible sales, they brought games but it wasn't a mario, zelda or metroid ect, so wii owners let them die.
If it wasn't for ubisoft wii u 3rd party support would be borderline dead.
Nintendo fans are definitely too something.
Many ps gamers are or where nintendo gamers and we all know ps gamers think 3rd party sucks on nintendo consoles and they are half right not many third parties have a leg to stand on since they damaged the image of them supporting a nintendo console.
They are currently doing this on the ps systems as bad game after bad game is released.
They seem to use of the hype and good will surrounding a system and move on. Some my fav developers are on wiiu so I'm good. I most follow the talent rather than the publisher name or brand.
All I read here was a bunch of bullshit excuses and selective facts that try to justify 3rd party "hardcore" games not selling on the Wii and WiiU. He is actually implying that PS3 and X360 gamers are dumber and less refined than WiiU gamers who apparently have a higher standard for games.
Yea, this is mostly nonsense. Its just that nintendo fans like 5 or 6 titles(mario, zelda etc.) and casual games (even the data they provide for the Wii prove that) and claim they get the short end on everything else. LMAO.
True some 3rd party games are boring and rehashed. A lot of people wait till the game is discounted before buying.
Poor sales could also mean nintendo fans have brought another console so as to play the good 3rd party games.
I bought my Wii U to play Wii U exclusive games... nothing more...
Since there's no Trophy or Achievement system on Wii U, there's no incentive to buying any 3rd party multiplatform games on Wii U....
Nintendo.... alot of us really would like a trophy/achievement system on Wii U.... Please make it happen...
Just my 2 cents...
apparently they dont care about some first party games either as games such as Conduit,Conduit 2, Pikmin and others barely sold on the Wii.
People have tastes whether its 1st party games or third party games and most ppl wont settle buying a game they dont want. I myself spend at least 90% of my time gaming on exclusives on my Ps3.
the only thing this article proves is that idiocy knows no bounds. The piece is just a massive contradiction with lots of holes.
Nintendo's first party stuff can keep the Wii-u afloat for a while, but you do need 3rd party stuff to keep the boat floating. Also many 3rd party games for the wii were bad ports. The few exclusives like No more Heroes and Tatsunoku vs Capcom were amazing games. If a 3rd party focuses on making a wii-u game, then they'll most likely make a great game that will sell well.
I've been a fan of Nintendo since even before the NES came out. But my taste has changed and I havn't bought the WiiU yet because I am not as enticed to buy with owning a PS3, PC and 360, my Wii sat so much and the PS3, PC and 360 put out more games than I can keep up with. But if the new Zelda and Metroid blow me away, I may buy the WiiU then since I love these games.
I can't think of one time I ever bought a non-excluive title for a Nintendo system. I think it was the South Park game for the N64 but it was super hard to find the PS1 version..
I was a Nintendo fan until N64/PS1 came along, then I jumped shipped and never looked back.
I never liked any of the gimmicky controllers, including 64 and this is the reason why I never played some of the game that looked interesting.
I'm just waiting for a huge price drop or deal for a Wii U so I can play those classics on the pro controller...
I don't want a secondary touch screen or a stylus or a non wireless nunchuck.
I want more games like New Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
I want a full fledged pokemon rpg that plays like the originals on Gameboy or Gameboy advance, but on the big screen. Even if they changed the graphics to make it a clean looking 3D HD game that's fine.
I don't want some cheap looking 3d pokemon game that they call black/white. You either keep the old style graphics or you move to console if you want to make it 3d. The DS doesn't do what Nintendo wants with black/white.
no nintendo fans are smart enough not to buy third party games they already spent there hard earned money on on other consoles. If a series of AAA third party exclusives came to wii they very well might sell well
It's not that they're too smart or they dont care. Nintendo is reliable. They make more money on software than anybody. If a software company can't spend the dollars to market their game on Nintendo, then they're asking for their game to get buried.
Nintendo knows what their fans want.
Let's face it, when you have such a devoted fanbase, there's just no room for other developers. It's a double-edged sword.
I don't know I usually buy third party games on PS3 or PC. But now and then I did get one on Wii and now Wii U like I got Black Ops 2 on Wii U and love it. Some third party games are really good on a Nintendo console and others just prefer the PS3 and coming up PS4 and PC.
