XboxGaming: Kinect 'hands-on' impressions from rAge Expo 2010

"Contrary to the rantings of your local forum troll, Kinect isn't some elaborate smoke and mirrors marketing scam peddled by Microsoft employees the world over to steal your money (although, ultimately, that's what they want), in fact, Kinect does a great job at picking up players and their movements. However, while the hardware is certainly impressive, some of the games on show did highlight the need for more development time to smooth out one or two kinks before the final release."

Did any of you thinking this was a positive article actually read the whole thing or just the conclusion.

Examples:
ping pong without a paddle really... oh and you can't actually direct the ball... huh??

Then he plays a racing game that does not control speed or breaking and wait the steering is over responsive and not natural.

Did I read any of this wrong it truly and I don't think I'm being fan-boyish here seems like a de-evolution of gaming since this gives you less control.

Don't get me wrong the dance one seems cool and a fun party game and the animal one could be cool for my 4 year old daughter since their is no controller. But then again with no controller that game doesn't even help develop her fine motor skills so what value other then looking pretty and interactive does it add over her playing with a stuffed animal.

Please lets see some intelligent thought provoking discussions about this.

But I do see it as some one who enjoyed the offering dispite some flaws whic he made every effort to point out even when he saw non. To think that kinect will perfectly reproduce your every action at this stage would be setting yourself up for disappointment. I expect it to do a good job of representing my intent so that I fell in controll of the game. For that reason I will be mindful about what he said about limited lateral placement of the ball in table tennis. That is and issue in theat one game that I look forward to trying.
His comments on Dance Central were unnecessary. Etheir you notic lag or you did. he didn't. In other words, if there is lag and you didn't notice any, it does not exsist. Yourshape fitnest is your image in realtime (No avator)if there is no lag there then there is no way to hide it. There just isn't any.

I am getting Kinect for sure. I have seen many videos and listen to many interviews with people after playing with Kinect. I would say 98% of people who used it had positive reactions with no complaints what so ever. Previews and reviews at this point only serve to some me what to look for when I get it. If I find it unbearable to play, I will come here and tear M$, UBi$, EA, EA, Sega, THQ and all who make games for Kinect a new A'hole. But if I like what they offer, I shall sing them praises. I have never played a game without a controller and I will admit that I am excited about getting my hands on kinect.

@GWAVE
I agree 100% the adds I've seen in bestbuy and futureshop totally gear it towards the same market as wii but because it's xbox the kids that are yammering at their uneducated parents will buy it for them. I'm so tired of these younger gamers showing SO much loyalty to a brand that keeps failing them. 1st they cut their lifetime so short on their 1st console. Then to capitalise on their new found popularity they release a shotty product that has the biggest fail rate I've ever seen in the industry by a LANDSLIDE. They also and this is just IMO release a product they know that can be pirated then wait till they have a tone of them out their. Crash them all on them so they have to go out and buy another system. And finally they use their marketing the same way they always do to marketing a crappy product that does less then everyone else's but cloud it in a mirror of crap like "it doesn't use a controller" so kids can sell it to their parents and get them to spend more money.

Sorry that' probably really poorly written but hopefully get's my point accross

@bigpappy I don't really understand what point you were trying to make their. Yes I agree he said Dance Central lag was not a deterent great that's why I said I could see that being a fun party game.

My overall concern is I don't see how this product is anything worth spending money on especially if you are not a casual gamer or a young child.

I mean to me this does not even give any one ups on wii except graphics. at least wii you could actually direct your ball in ping pong and have control over how fast you drive.

The control I have with my move system is insane am I totally told on it yet... no. Am I enjoying what it's offering so far... VERY much. I played ping pong for 3 hours strait and could not get over the control I had. The Frisbee golf is a blast. That's just the one game. All the mini games xbox has so far have shown me no value compared to what I have. The Dance game should be just as easy to do on PS3 and I'm sure will be out. The adventure game although he had fun it seems like it will be very boring after a few quick laughs.

Lastly Bigpappy my comment was directed at all the people talking about how positive the article was

@ Pocketaces11

Look..your agenda is clear..if you have to come into an Kinect article and bring up the lifetime of the original Xbox or have to tie in RROD just to make your point then it's clear what your bias is.

How about this..don't buy Kinect..the rest of us like myself will gladly pick up our preorder..

I bought a Move this weekend and after playing it..nothing has changed.when it comes to the family games..Wii is still as fun as ever and I'm still looking forward to picking up Kinect..day one.

I bought the Sports champion bundle..an extra controller..and 3 games..Ubisoft's Raquet sports,Start the Party, and Bruswick bowling...then when I got home I downloaded Tumble, the other bowling game and a bunch of the other demos..

Move is cool..we had a blast with Bocce and Gladiator..the mini games of 'party' where pretty much eye toy standards..and the bowling was ok..

At the end of the day..we still ended up playing Wii Sports Resort for the light saber game and the 100 pin bowling...not because the Wii-mote is the most accurate..but because the games are still fun

I'd recommend Move for any PS3 owner if they want to have some fun and want to fork over the cash..but I'm not going to pretend that Ping Pong was so fun that we would play for 3 hours..LOL..it's not

But I'm sure it's more accurate than Kinect..but who cares?

I have 6 neices and family & friends who come over who are all toddlers and above..and I can't wait for them to play Kinectimals and 'Adventures'..Why? Because they are great family games..

For me I love the control funtionality..the cam connection to Messenger..and can't wait to play games like 'Child of Eden'.

In the end..don't like it..don't buy it..but if you are in every Kinect article spinning the same old stuff..then it's clear what it's all about

pocketaces114952d ago

Played many games on wii have similar family situation we all got tired of wii in few days (I still don't know anyone anymore who uses their wii still) and thought that we would almost out the gates. Not the same with move lots of fun like wii was but because of added realism it has way more lasting fun power. I didn't even think I would like that superstars game but we were almost in tears making our characters. Still never got close to that with wii. So I can't say I agree with your thoughts. I hadn't even tried the ping pong game as I was having so much fun with the others but last night I couldn't stop playing. I can't see that being the case except MAYBE for very your kids.

This is the 1st kinect post I've even posted comments on and thought we could have a real discussion but I guess that's impossible on n4g as I found time and time again. The advertising including a new one is just Microsoft looking for more money with the least amount of added value to the consumer.

I do apologize though my 2nd post did I guess go over the top but regardless I think it holds some valid points and I'm glad you think I got my point across (not that anyone is listening) and yes I guess not the place for it.

ndibu4953d ago

A positive Kinect article. I didn't think these were allowed here.
Watch the resident anti-kinect squadron decent and tell us whats really what. I'll believe a guy who's had time on kinect over a jack-ass on n4g any day

King-Leonidas4952d ago (Edited 4952d ago )

settle down troll and enjoy the article.

Mr_Bun4952d ago (Edited 4952d ago )

"I'll believe a guy who's had time on kinect over a jack-ass on n4g any day"....or the many videos showing the flaws apparently. This guy even mentions how all issues that people have noticed from game footage are still relevant. How is this a positive review?

Oh, and I love how the 'journalist' makes it sound like any and all negative press regarding kinect are from forum trolls...OK buddy

k-Lan4952d ago

Was Move released to market? I haven't heard anything since.

lowcarb4952d ago (Edited 4952d ago )

A lot of people have talked it down but to deny the majority are forum trolls is just wrong.

edit bun: "The issues surrounding kinect have been witnessed and recorded."

And as of late all those witnessed and recorded moments have been put to rest. When it releases people can decide for themselves but as far as trolling goes I see we agree.

Moentjers4952d ago

that's because
a) it works
b) it has games
c) it sells

nothing to complain about = no articles

Mr_Bun4952d ago (Edited 4952d ago )

to deny the majority of problems haven't been captured on video, is just wrong.

With kinect, we aren't talking about the typical speculation that spreads with any 'new' product. The issues surrounding kinect have been witnessed and recorded.

Does it bother you at all that this "positive" Kinect article mentions how laggy it is several times? And that he describes most of the stuff he played as "mini-games?" And that he concludes by saying that it's obviously targeted at the casual market, as opposed to core gamers?

I agree that this was a nice write-up from somebody who obviously liked his brief time with Kinect, but it kind of confirms what most of us have been suspecting all along.

gamingdroid4952d ago

I have no issues with casual games. They have a place in my game library as well and works great when I want to have some fun with the family.

The article mentions lags, but also says it isn't that noticeable. I tried it and it works great. What it lacks in response time, it makes up for in other areas such as full body 3D tracking.

King-Leonidas4952d ago

hahaha i love what they did with the title. ´Hands on´ with Kinect.

Bgibbs4952d ago

xboxgaming.co.za

Can't be taken seriously just like site who review Move with Playstation in the title can't be taken seriously.

Psynapt1k4952d ago

Gee, thanks, like we South Africans are sub-human or something? - We do not have lions roaming the streets over here contrary to popular belief. South Africa is an awesome country with credible people.

Bgibbs4952d ago

Don't be absurd. All I said was sites with "xbox" or "playstaion" in the in the site name reviewing products from their respected company can't be taken seriously.

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog827d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry916827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

827d ago
CrimsonWing69827d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming827d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer79827d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember827d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog827d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop827d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic827d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop827d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Rhythmattic826d ago (Edited 826d ago )

Porky
"You're acting like it would take months"
Sometimes it could.. FFS.. 'Strya here...
Best turnaround I reckon was 2-3 weeks.....
Either way, My mates experiences still exist.. So Sorry, no point trying to earn Xbox Achievements when it doesn't feature in what was a situation you never dealt with,,,,
3 of my friends would disagree (overall, 10 extra Xboxes purchased)
Regardless.. MS sold a lot of 360's that was due to this reason.. That is sales. Fact

"none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about."
Headline says HELLO !
Oh and "Sadly, not all hardware is created equal," that's enough to pass this on without taking your article bias into consideration.....
As for the rest.... Ok.. But you've actually gone out of your way to give MS a Pass... Fap on.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 826d ago
Aloymetal827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic827d ago (Edited 827d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

lonewolf10827d ago

Lol I had the Atari Jaguar, surprised its "competition" the 3DO isn't on the list too, both as "popular" as each other.

SullysCigar827d ago

Lol same. Played the crap out of Aliens Vs Predator and Tempest 2000 .... aaand that's about it really!!

lonewolf10827d ago

Sad but true that was pretty much it.

Kurt Russell827d ago

Agreed, I never actually saw a 3DO make it to retailers in the UK. At least the Atari Jaguar was sold for around 6 months.

lonewolf10827d ago

It made it to some my brother got one, fared just as well as the Jaguar so most probably hard to find in general.

darthv72827d ago

3do had way better games. Jaguar not so much. Neo Geo sold less than both and yet isnt considered a failure. Go figure.

LWOGaming827d ago

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

Magog827d ago

The sales model was awful. They should have teamed with an existing player to allow for local and cloud access to games or a gaming subscription service.

LWOGaming827d ago

It was a strange mess from such a huge company, as I said, as a system it works really well but without gamers it’s nothing. Such a waste,

LWOGaming827d ago

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s Nintendo Wii U. Undercooked, undersold and just an unholy mess. The thing is with any of these failures is to learn from them and thankfully both Nintendo and Xbox did just that to the benefit of gamers everywhere.
