IGN UK: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Review

So what does that all mean in the end? It’s a tricky one: without Enslaved’s inarguably spectacular bells and whistles, you’d be left with a fun, if undoubtedly flawed, action adventure, nudged ever so slightly up the recommendation scale by its compelling structure and smart sense of pace. Of course, it’s impossible to ignore the game’s glossy production and, for better or worse, these elements carry Enslaved beyond its slightly anaemic core and deliver a genuinely engaging experience. Its rich imagination, restrained narrative and charming cast of characters place it a significant step above its often clumsy story-obsessed brethren - and, while easy to find fault with, it’s harder to knock Enslaved in terms of pure entertainment value.

i am not sure how i am supposed to react to a ninga theory game. Its mainly because the articles about nt contain small portions from a interview. usually the sensatinal stuff. so basically i kind of dont like them at all, since i cant find any reason to like them. which means i am really not going to purchase their products.hmmm. and i know this games was no easy task.

from what i read (so far)it appears to be a good game. But i have a feeling its not going to be enough.

MisterNiwa4954d ago

From my expieriences, Enslaved is not better than Castlevania.

Croash4954d ago

But Enslaved and Castlevania aren't in the same genre.

chazjamie4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

i am glad you picked up on my castlevania dilemma, even though i didn't mention it. but i can imagine (agh, i hate speculating) that i am going to have more fun with castlevania.

nice proper nouns.

x5exotic4954d ago

from my experiences....castlevania is not better than god of war

nveenio4954d ago

Ninja Theory has completely lost any ounce of respect I'd had for them. It seems like they have a lot of hurt feelings about Heavenly Sword and that they aim those hard feelings toward Sony. I think that they're upset that Sony didn't give them the same massive budget and delivery window that they gave to GG, ND, PD and MM. But the fact remains that Ninja Theory is no Sucker Punch. They're no Naughty Dog. They're no Polyphony Digital. They're no Guerilla Games. They're no Media Molecule. Should I go on?

Ninja Theory is a decent dev that has higher ambitions than support. But bad mouthing everything and everyone just because they had a wobbly start this gen isn't going to put them in a prime position for being picked up permanently by any decent publishers.

Still on the fence, damn it..

Replayability & Longevity are the two problems stopping me from buying on day one.

... And of course, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is there & only a few days after it's release. (UK)

Game-ur4954d ago

After a week or 2 you will have another dilemma when Vanquish releases.

Anyone who played the demo will till you Castilevania is a BIG game with a good story great atmosphere and hardcore gameplay lasting 20+ hours, a must buy.

Enslaved in the other hand will be over in a breeze and the gameplay isn't enjoyable. Just looks good with a good story. Rent or wait for a price droop.

King-Leonidas4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

i´ll get it once the price drops a bit, since im a fan of apocalyptic themed games.

CREESH4954d ago

Looks like a good solid game...But is getting of hate from the PS3 fanboy comunity.

Kurisu4954d ago

I don't know why there's so much hate. I'm a PS3 only owner and I've been looking forward to this game ever since it was announced. I keep checking my GAME order. Moved from "preorder" to "pending"....woop! Can't wait to play it.

lowcarb4954d ago

There's hate because the game has good graphics and put's to rest there it could only of been done on PS3 argument. I'm not surprised they gave it an 8 with all those fanboys working at IGN UK.

raztad4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

You talk too much sh1t.

This game has just above average graphics, it has nothing to do wit it.

The "hate" you talk about is because NT developers themselves. They have been doing a very nice job pissing off the PS3 community.

Redlogic4954d ago

No, I don't think that is the reason. I have read a lot of articles quoting NT complaining about Heavenly Sword, how they didn't make money and such. They really went out of their way to distance themselves from that game (btw I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword so I don't know why) and I guess a lot of Ps3 fans didn't like that. It seems they are trying to cozy up to the xbox crowd after doing a ps3 exclusive? Just a theory.

Anyways, I will be getting this game, just not day one.

SaberEdge4954d ago

OR maybe they just weren't happy with the way some parts of their experience with Heavenly Sword went and are just speaking honestly when interviewers ask them questions about it.

Hating them for such mild comments is immature.

YoshiMeetsU4954d ago

"They have been doing a very nice job pissing off the PS3 community. "

Then what a bunch of over sensitive sissies!

lowcarb: I think you are on to something as well.

Boody-Bandit4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

I haven't seen any hate directed at Enslaved. Actually I haven't seen any at Ninja Theory either. I think it's more of people being tired of story after article listening to Ninja Theory bitch about HS, sales, relationship with Sony, etc...

It's like, "WE GET IT NT, YOU'RE FRUSTRATED". Can we move on now? That is what I read into NT and PS3 fans.

To be totally honest I myself am a little disappointed with NT and Enslaved. After having played Heavenly Sword I was expecting more from Ninja Theory's next game.

Enslaved looks to be a decent title but not 3 years removed from NT's last game. I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword and I thought Enslaved wa going to be a mind blower. It's not.

NecrumSlavery4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

Yeah it's basically that Ninja Theory has spent everyday since Enslaved was announced, bitching about the sales of Heavenly Sword, how the media reviews were to mean, the PS3 is a tough machine to work on, and that everyone stole their milk and cookies, blah, blah, blah,....!

PS3 fans actually don't have any hate for this game. I am sure this will probably sell more on the PS3 too. But to call out on people isnt needed. It's not really a fanboy issue here. I get that some see this as an Uncharted knockoff, but that's cause NT pulled a Molyneux and said this game is visually more epic than U2: Among Thieves. 360 gamers don't usually buy these types of games, but with NT's 360 ass kissing and that they promote this more on 360, the sales my be good for them. Overall I feel they will get around the same in sales like they did with Heavenly Sword(2mil), and NT probably will go on to making up more excuses why it quote-unquote FAILED.

And BTW, Heavenly Sword rocked. It's a shame that this game is a bit of step behind an amazing epic three year old game with gorgous cutscenes, environments, and Oscar worthy characters. But we'll see how Enslaved really compares.

Biggest4954d ago

I'd love to see the "good graphics and put's to rest there it could only of been done on PS3 argument" that lowcarb is talking about. What the hell is a "put's" anyway? You know that someone is going to show screen shots of this game aside a certain other Ninja Theory game. Don't be sad when they do, lowcarb.

lowcarb4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

Quit whining you baby brats. You sensitive guys know exactly what I'm talking about.

"They have been doing a very nice job pissing off the PS3 community."
Lord forbid anybody tick off the PS3 community.

edit redlogic: Your post might be spot on.

Homicide4954d ago (Edited 4954d ago )

"The "hate" you talk about is because NT developers themselves. They have been doing a very nice job pissing off the PS3 community. "

There's just talking about their experience with the game. They're upset with everything that happened during development and after the game released. They didn't make any money, and the game didn't live up to the hype.

Would you be upset that you didn't make any money on a big budget game? It's not like they're attacking your mother or anything...unless the PS3 is your mother.

I got my order early from shopto.net and I have to say this is strange one I don't want spoil it but its 100% not what it seems there's big twist that notice from couple hours in. An i mean this might cause alot stir if this is goning the way think its going. graphics are very good for mutiplat game I'am playing the ps3 version and it runs at 720p

and I have say I had since this mourning gone to work and had only few hours on it and on chapter 4 out 13 so its not going to longest of games and the only replay I see this is getting more of the upgrades I probably trade it in.

Kurisu next time go shopto.net cheapest on the web due price guarantee and I allways get games early Sometimes early than the pirates.

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming17d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long17d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple10117d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor17d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6917d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno17d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 10 worst PC ports that ruined otherwise great video games

From Xfire: "It's not unusual to see the occasional bad PC port, but these ones make the bad PC ports look great in comparison."

Kados1024d ago

To be fair with GTAIV, it was a very CPU bound game, released at a time when the vast majority of PC gamers still believed that the CPU was nearly irrelevant, and that you only needed a good GPU. 95% of "gaming" builds back then were using turds for CPUs.

Giblet_Head1024d ago (Edited 1024d ago )

Ya, 2005-2010 was an interesting period. Entry/mid level CPUs have come a long way since then.

RonsonPL1023d ago (Edited 1023d ago )

The "majority" is still just as dumb as before. The game was simply f...d.
It had micro-stutters and never ever ran properly. People who say otherwise simply couldn't see the microstutter because of their LCD display's blurry motion. It should fly in 85fps or 100fps on fastest CPU back then, but it didn't. It was a buggy, awful port. I had a CPU over twice as fast as what x360 had. A GPU 5x as fast. And I couldn't do anything to make it run perfectly.
I don't know who's fault was this. Maybe it was not the developers alone. Maybe it was because of the drivers and the fact nobody gave a flying f..k about stable, high framerate on a PC game. We've had two different OSes then, and as I pointed out, microstutters were not that obvious on an LCD. There was no Digital Foundry to point such problems out and not many people still played on CRT monitors to be able to notice the problem (in like 2 seconds of playing, seriously, you don't need any tools. It just hits your eyes like a speeding truck)

GTA V continued the tradition. It manages the CPU resources so badly, it basically cannot run at locked 144fps till this day, or even 60fps in stereoscopic 3D mode (so 2x 60fps per second) because it's so dependant on single core performance and because it's so messed up by either port devs or Nvidia (who said they will fix it, then 3 years of promises led to shutting the forums down, which solved the problem in their eyes - no one complains anymore ;)

GTA III port was never optimized for even 60fps, not to mention 100 or 120.
The port of GTA V was hidden in their cabinet for almost 3 years, during which PC gamers were bein lied to about it.

See the pattern yet?
Yeah. They don't give a shit about PC gaming or assume a buggy, stuttery mess is good enough, as long as people keep buying the games.

Actually... to think of it. They didn't make a proper Lemmings game for PC either. There was Amiga version and that's it. Only later on they mercifully released Lemmings: Tribes sequel. Until then PC gamers could only dream about digitized (real recorded audio) sounds and music. So this tradition of shitting onto PC gamers is now 30 years old ;)
