PS3 losing ground as dominant Blu-ray player

One of the biggest selling points for the PS3 is that Blu-ray player inside it. For a while there it seemed that was one of the only reasons anyone was picking up the system. So it should come as no surprise that according to Home Media Magazine 47 percent of people who watch Blu-rays do it on a PS3. However, that's actually a drop off for the system, as 45 percent of watches are now using stand-alone players where only six months ago the PS3 had a two-to-one advantage over players.

I'm not sure D'toid are correct, in fact, I read the exact opposite recently:

http://www.industrygamers.c...

mikeslemonade4973d ago

Percentages are BS in some context. Until a stand-alone player begins to approach 40 million units then it's a big deal. That will never happen. Name one DVD player model that outsold the PS2 at 150 million. PS3 will always be the dominant one by far.

Anon19744973d ago

So, let me get this straight. The PS3 makes up roughly 50% of all Blu-Ray players out there - and the rest combined make up the other 50%? All that says to me is that Blu-Ray players are finally catching on with the none gamer crowd. Meanwhile PS3 sales keep going up and up. And Destructoid wants us to believe this is a bad thing why?

Oh yeah. Because it's Destructoid, still racing to hit bottom. Good luck with that, boys.

badz1494973d ago

this article is stupid, scratch that, D'toid is stupid! there I said it! in the earlier stage, PS3 was the alternative BD player and it happened to be the best out there and priced cheaper thus making it the best choice for those looking for a BD player but this is gonna happen sooner or later. stand alone player will go down in price faster than the PS3 but that doesn't mean shit because PS3 is sold as a gaming machine first BD player 2nd!

DaTruth4973d ago

8% of people are watching Blurays on something other than a PS3 or standalone Bluray player!

Wonder what that is????

MrMccormo4973d ago

Is the PS2 the "dominant DVD player"? Was it ever?

This article misses the point. The PS3 didn't come out to be only a Blu Ray player. It simply helped push the Blu Ray format.

InTheKnow4973d ago

I saw a $88 blu-ray player at Walmart a few months back. I don't know how Sony can compete with that.

paintsville4973d ago

the ps3 is without a doubt the best blu ray player on the market.

m-s-8-24972d ago

"I saw a $88 blu-ray player at Walmart a few months back. I don't know how Sony can compete with that. "

What would they be trying to compete with exactly? That just means now the white trash of America will be buying Blu-Ray movies which in turn means money for Sony.

darthv724972d ago

i got an lg bd570. That is a nice compact bd player. Quiet and fast at loading a movie or getting on netflix. PS3 beats it though because it plays games.

Video playback however, the LG beats the ps3. The clarity is something i didnt think would be different even on the same tv. Upscaling, I preferred the 360 to the ps3 but now this lg even puts that to shame.

So long as I now have more than one bd player in the house, I can start buying more bd movies. That was the turn off for me. I have WAY more players for dvd available throughout the house to make me buy the bd copy. Now that is slowly changing. Or at least get the bd/dvd combos now.

paintsville4972d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again. PS3 is a great blu ray player.

GrandTheftZamboni4972d ago

If this is true, hopefully it'll shut up those claiming that people buy PS3 for watching Blu-ray movies once and for all.

MAR-TYR-DOM4973d ago

You are sadly mistaken, current high end blu ray players from Pioneer and Panasonic have better audio drivers and optimized video setting to provide a better blu ray experience, not only that they are all network enabled (can update via internet like ps3) of course they cost $500 though. On the other hand there are also cheap alternatives for people who just want a blu ray player like the standard sony BR player which goes for about $100 - $150.

shoddy4973d ago

Sound depend on reciever and speaker.

Can standalone br player play games, serve net, video conference, send message, 3D, rent/buy movies?

Yes ps3 is still the best.

Thugbot1874973d ago

@shoddy at least come to the same conversation, with some common sense. What's being talked about is BLU RAY drive and standard features that should come with it. Its obvious PS3 is a great BLU-RAY player but on the flip side its several years old; with that being said new BLU-RAY players should come out that are better than the first generation players, which in no way means PS3 sucks. Quit being a rabid fanboy ; PS4 can only benefit from improvements made this generation to BLU-RAY.

shoddy4973d ago

do I sound like a fanboy? This is not xbox vs ps3.

tell me what standalone can do ps3 can not.

Nemo884973d ago

You come off as a fanboy spouting all the benefits of ps3 vs standalone... when this is just about Blu-ray players.

The silly thing is people on this site are so used to these fanboy wars... they dont realise that this news is actually POSITIVE.. NOT AN ATTACK. SONY AND THE BLU_RAY CONSORTIUM ARE SELLING MORE PLAYERS.

And yes... it is definitely possible for a new, 500$ standalone player, to do more than the blu-ray in the 299 ps3, which is as you mention Shoddy does not just do blu-ray, hence the blu-ray is likely to be of even less quality than $299.

One thing that immediately comes to mind as an instant upgrade would be Speed. The blu-ray in ps3 is on 1-2X.

Also 3D blu-rays will be better on these new DVD players.

Love Sony, but quit being on the defensive ;)

Petro4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

Shoddy is actually right. PS3 is always compared to new Blu-ray players and it still wins out. And some point out that Blu-ray drive on PS3 has only 2x reading speeds... but anyone who has played a Blu-ray knows thats plenty. And really a problem with standalone Blu-ray players is the lack of processing power.

RedDragan4972d ago (Edited 4972d ago )

There is far more to it than just being able to display 1080p and producing 7.1 surround.

I recommend you take a visit to AVforums. You'll get all the information there, 1080p video quality can be improved by using advanced techniques in the post processing on the player side.

And 7.1 surround audio fidelity can be improved by filtering signals through the use of dedicated hardware, instead of software.

There are plenty of blu-ray players that produce better video and sound than the PS3. The PS3 strength is the extra features that make it the best media center on the market.

MAR-TYR-DOM4972d ago

Some info on why PS3 is not the best blu ray player
First off, id like to tell you that what i will be talking about is STRICTLY IN REFERENCE OF COMPARING PS3 as a BLURAY player nothing more, i dont care if it can play games store pictures, we are comparing blu ray capability.

Lets compare a better stand alone like the Samsung BD C6900S which is what i own (i also own a ps3), this is a better blu ray player first off, it loads movies faster due to optimized and newer disc laser.
Has HDMI 1.4 installed where as the PS3 is only HDMI 1.2
Has an audio decoder the ps3 does not which is DTS-HD Master Audio (if you have a receiver that has this compatible decoder then you have better audio)
And finally the audio dynamic range (low to high sound outputs) is 100db where the ps3's is 90db.

ON TOP OF ALL THAT, the firmware on these blu ray players or mine at least is updated monthly with improvments where the ps3 is updated when they release a system update for the whole system.

Heres a few sources
http://reviews.cnet.com/blu...

http://www.samsung.com/hk_e...

No one is bashing the ps3 as you may think, but next time please do your research, ps3 is not the best BLURAY player if all you care about is bluray, i have a ps3 and its not the center piece of a my home theater system i have this samsung bp and my ps3 is in my room for games.

If you are an audiophile and home theater fanatic then you will understand better where i am coming from.

PS3 losing ground? I guess people are talking about other abilities being a factor(gaming etc) because as a player itself my entry level Samsung BD-c5500 has a superior picture by more than a little. My brother has an Oppo need I say more?

Skadoosh4973d ago

Actually the ps3 is not the best bluray player on the market. That goes to the Panasonic. The ps3 has a problem with fast moving scenes.

multipayer4973d ago

I'd think the read speed would be vastly improved in BD drives since PS3.

GraySnake4972d ago

thats a problem with your tv refresh rate...

Shane Kim4972d ago

Hhhmmm. Sounds more like your TV than the PS3.

beardpapa4973d ago

isn't it a "good" thing if the ps3 is losing ground as the dominant blu-ray player? It means that blu-ray has become household and isn't increasing in market share solely by ps3 sales.

Nemo884973d ago

...unless this coincided with stats on people passing up on ps3 purchases for a standalone. But then again i think Ps3 should be looking to stand on its own by now

jrm1254972d ago

Exactly right. This was always the point. Sony wanted to get the format popular so it used a system they knew people would buy.

Eventually the point was always to hand off the Blu-ray popularity elsewhere. The PS3 was never meant to always be the most popular (in a way, that would indicate failure).

Of course the story is twisted in a negative light, but from an industry standpoint this is a positive for Sony.

DigitalAnalog4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

Now haters can remove this "Bu-bu-bu-the-PS3-is-just -just-just-a-blu-rayzzzz-plaerr rtthhhh" from their checklist.

It means it's becoming a more dominant "gaming" console.

True, but Sony aren't pushing the PS3 as much as a BR player now as there are cheaper alternatives as you've said (I've seen them as low as £60) and there are more than enough quality titles on the console.

alb18994973d ago

It was the best but is not anymore since there is full 3d 1.4 hdmi out now.

MNicholas4973d ago

and while it's still, by far, the best selling Blu-Ray player, it's only a matter of time before the $99 stand alone arrives and eliminates DVD players from store shelves.

When sales of standalone Blu-Ray players overtake PS3 sales, the Blu-Ray on PS3 strategy can be considered a significant success.

frostypants4972d ago (Edited 4972d ago )

The PS3 is arguably still the best Blu-Ray player, but the margin is narrowing and the days when the PS3 was the CHEAPEST player have long since passed.

Still, this is actually a victory for Sony and the rest of the Blu-Ray consortium. It shows that the format has gained broad acceptance, and the strategy to leverage the PS3 as a means of showcasing the capabilities of the format to the mainstream was no doubt a massive part of it.

Remember, gaming is just a slice of Sony's business. It's little skin off their back if people buy other Blu-Ray players...they make next to nothing on the PS3 hardware anyway (they used to take a massive loss on them).

Also note that "drop-off" in percentage of PS3's sold as a Blu-Ray device does NOT equate to a drop off in the number of PS3's sold overall. It just means that more people are buying Blu-Ray players in general, and non-PS3 players are gaining share of that larger audience. "Percentage" does not equal "total units sold".

/End wall of text

vhero4972d ago

Considering it was one of the first blu-ray players out there it's eventually gonna degrade as players get better and firmware can only take that so far but it won't affect the great games and great loooking movies in 2d or 3d.

yeah i am not surprised, it isn't the cheapest BD around any more. BD Players run $80-$160. It's like i said a long time ago, they will get cheaper and cheaper as time goes on. Eventually we will see the BD Player Percentage get closer to DVD player Percentage.

frostypants4972d ago

Remember when people said Blu-Ray was DOA? Especially the HD-DVD fanboys after that format was crushed?

I told people back then, the Best Buy movie aisle tells you all you need to know, and back then every few weeks the Blu-Ray aisle got bigger...and bigger...and bigger...

Now here we are. Within 2 or 3 years, DVD will be on the verge of being phased out, much as VHS was after DVD had been around for a few years. Then...when nobody is even paying attention anymore...*poof*...DVD will be gone.

All_4_One4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

I could see how Blu-Ray was a selling point when it first launched, but nowadays you can pick up a Blu-Ray player for dirt cheap. I`d say that most people buying PS3s nowadays are looking to play some games.

Edit: If you disagree, please, let me know why you think otherwise.

All_4_One4973d ago

Yeah, having 2-in-1 is a selling point for sure, but I still doubt many people are buying PS3s for mainly Blu-Ray. I think nowadays the PS3 having Blu-Ray is more of a bonus where as a few years ago it was an incentive.

Boody-Bandit4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

baodeus4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

there are billions of people out there that don't play console games. They may like to watch blueray movie, but not games. If there is a cheaper alternative to blue-ray, they will go for it instead of a PS3. Why do u guys think non gamer would go for PS3 for blue-ray?

There are billions of computer user out there compare to 40 million ps3 users. The PC/MAC already have everything including Blue-ray. How can online, web search features on PS3 be better than computer? Furthermore, those features on PS3 are probably the worst out there right? Can you seriously prefer web search on PS3 to a PC? If you disagree, then explain how those online feature (web search for example) is better on PS3 than PC/MAC.

They already have 3D tv, 3d movie, and of course stand alone blue-ray player that can do all of those things. PS3 is not the only option for 3D movie. The adoption may not be as fast since many people just switch to HDTV. Are they gonna fork out more to get a 3D tv instead (which is still pretty expansive right now).

DelbertGrady4973d ago

maybe other do...but, bah wtv, its a console not a blu ray player above all what a stupid discussion.

kerrak4973d ago

DelbertGrady you better make sure those people that don't play games know nothing about the web browser, the ability to stream from their pc/mac, VCR funcionality with PlayTV, store divx/mp3/jpg as a very powerful multimedia hdd, easy access to netflix/mubi/PSStore films, VidZone, mlbtv and other catchup tv channels, everything in a cheap single device.

bustamove4973d ago

Only you would spin what I just said, only you. The thing is, this argument is getting stale. The PS3 is still the best bluray on the market and it plays some damn good games. If a consumer knows that, then why would they buy a standalone bluray when they have something that can be used for more than one thing?

radphil4973d ago (Edited 4973d ago )

Because NOT EVERYONE is a gamer. There are movie enthusiasts.

I dunno what's DelbertGrady's past actions are, nor do I care tbh.

I have a few co-workers that care only about movies. Those types of people do exist in the world.

playboi284973d ago

I understand what you are saying and I love my PS3 but standalone Blu-Ray players are getting far cheaper. Not to mention the fact that I already have a PS3 so why spend that much money to get another one just to have a Blu-Ray player in my bedroom? Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1825d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie4d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.
