Die, DLC, Die!

From The Big Pixels:

"This title is a misnomer. I don't want DLC to die, I just want it to change. Drastically.

Do you remember the good ol' expansion pack? Remember the good old days when a game would come out and six months or maybe a year later a hefty expansion pack would arrive on store shelves? It would be offered at a reasonable price and would provide not one or two hours of additional entertainment, but hours upon hours of fun?

What happened to providing value and an experience worth playing through with DLC? Why are we buying $5 pieces of crap that expand upon nothing and are hastily put together to make a quick buck?"

Yeah, I loved GTAs episodes. Borderlands and Fallout did well too. Halo would have done great if ODST was DLC.

VTHockey4114987d ago

I agree. There are some great pieces of DLC, but they are few and far between. Fallout 3 had some great ones, both of the "Episodes from Liberty City" were great, and Borderlands has provided something in-between DLC and Expansion pack. It would just be great to see everyone provide good, quality DLC rather than the phoned-in junk that passes for DLC in most games today.

If it's one thing I can't stand about DLC it's how your trophy percentage goes down. If you platinum a game and have 100% why should your percentage drop even if you don't buy the DLC. You should only lose percentage if you buy the DLC.

joeyda4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

GTA's DLC WAS outstanding. But it's definitely the exception to the rule. How many recycled map packs does the world need?

EDIT: Also loved the DLC for Alan Wake, too bad it seems like I'm one of the few for that franchise.

VTHockey4114987d ago

I love the Alan Wake DLC, too. The next one may be the first DLC I actually purchase haha.

kissmeimgreek4987d ago

God i hope Alan Wake DLC is selling well so we will see a sequel. Truly a great game that should have sold more.

hikayu4987d ago

sorry but alan didnt ... unless MS suddenly throw a giant ads campaign , instead of Halo Reach , it's not likely to change .

mfwahwah4987d ago

What's that GTA4? I can't hear you over the roar of the crowd. Damn DLC throwing parties after every new release...

Redempteur4987d ago

GTA episodes made GTA 4 complete ..everything pretty much explained , humors and new games modes ... i bought it half price and that was awesome ..
ruis story was just great ...

dlc isn't a problem if there is a worthwhile content ...hours of fun in a city like GTA isn't bad dlc ..however the versus multiplayer of RE5 is ...

there is still dlc that give you hours of fun ... they are becoming rare day after day but wipeout HD fury is also another prime example of good dlc ...

and i could go on for hours ... dlc is good but the overexploitation of dlc by rehashed map packs ( COD MW2 ) or some unlock from the disk is what is killing dlc ...

PS: i enjoyed "opposing force " as much as halflife...

Solid_Snakeps34986d ago

Dragon Age's Witch Hunt and Darkspawn Chronicles say hi

Man In Black4986d ago

A lot of stuff that would have been unlockables last gen are now pre-order dlc. Just look at games like The Smackdown vs Raw series, or Mafia 2.

Yup, I've got to agree that Borderlands has had the best DLC of any recent game. I never played GTA's though (GTA4 got old for me fast), and Fallout 3's was good too. I just wish that everyone would stop paying 15 bucks for map packs.

e-p-ayeaH4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

Fallout 3 DLC´s were there to fill up more depresing gameplay

Mothership Zeta was the most depressing spaceship i ever seen and the the fact you cant hear your character talking just makes things go really slow (maybe thats the point lmao)

Eiffel4987d ago

"fact you cant hear your character talking "

Huh? Your character doesn't talk at all, vocally that is.

e-p-ayeaH4987d ago

@Eiffel yeah he/she doesnt talk at all and that´s even more depressing lol

Eiffel4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

Well the game revolves around a post apocalyptic setting with pure anarchy, of course it needs to be depressing, lol.

monkeybizz4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

bioware dlc has been good too. ME2 and DA:Origins in partcular.

Sarevok4987d ago

ALL DLC NEEDS TO DIE.
I got dragon age...
1 week later DOA goty announced.

etownone4987d ago

Yeah, sucks for you.

But great for me! I heard the game and all DLC was awesome.

Same as me and Mass Effect 2, bought all the DLC and now Ps3 owners get the game and all the DLC included.

Sarevok4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

sucks for me indeed..

I heard the dlc was not worth 7.00 a pop.
People tell me it only adds about a hour or 2 to game play.

A Cupcake for Gabe4987d ago

Doesn't Dragon Age have $87 worth of DLC? How is that going to fit onto a GotY Edition for only $60?

Sidewinder-4987d ago (Edited 4987d ago )

Though i must say the dlc i played was not worth my time.
don't bother bro.

Completed DA and feel nothing compell me to play again.

DA to me is full of "meh'ness".

floatingworld4987d ago

also says hi.

For real, the amount of content released for Mass Effect 2 has been fantastic. There has also been an excellent mix of free and paid-dlc. I didn't get very far in Dragon's Age but it seems it got a good amount of substantial DLC as well.

e-p-ayeaH4987d ago

as been getting some pointless DLCs but the zombie based one is actually interesting

Aquanauts Holiday at $500. Nice

jznrpg19h ago

I don’t collect games for their value I collect games I enjoyed playing. Many games I own are worth a lot of money but they must be games I want to play for me to purposely collect them. Most of this list isn’t games I would enjoy. I may have some of these games because I bought my friends PS2/3 Collection years ago and I never actually looked what was in it. It was a couple hundred games though still sitting in a box and I’m sure there are some good valuable games. I should go sift through it sometime.

Profchaos18h ago

I tend to agree for the most part rarity is linked to price
It's unusual that a rare game was popular with a few notable exceptions. Games released at the tail end of a consoles lifecycle which became popular years or decades later like little Samson on the NES or earthbound on SNES.
Or games that were banned after release in certain regions

Looking at this list there's nothing I'd be trying to collect either most of these games were fairly unpopular and bashed on their release leading to the scarcity seen now.
Especially NBA elite which I remember actually watching the news about how it got cancelled but had already shipped to retail it was so bad .

P_Bomb18h ago

I still have Afrika. Who knew it’d be worth something?

MrBaskerville11h ago

Was unaware that Verdict Day was rare, glad I still own my copy. Game is very good.

Chocoburger8h ago

She forgot to mention Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Wizard's Edition with Ninostarter bonuses. This is the second or third most expensive PS3 game, and I own a sealed copy.

Moving In My 30s Made Me Nostalgic For Physical Games

I lost my drive for collecting physical games due to many discs lacking the whole complete game. Instead, of collecting games I started collected figurines.

Popsicle2d ago

I am a collector have a room dedicated with a couple original arcade cabinets, physical game library, old and new consoles and controllers backlit with LED lighting. It’s very cool to have but with emulation being so strong and prevalent, I sometimes feel foolish because the hobby is expensive and like another said, the full game is not always on the disc. Could probably spend more wisely but I enjoy it.

shinoff21832d ago

Most games are usually on disc still. Of course you got you publishers that are hit and miss, Activision, ubisoft, ea, Microsoft, where the rest of the game needs downloaded.
