Ninja Theory Clarifies Concerns on PS3 DmC Development

Ninja Theory is hard at work on the latest adventures of Dante in their title called DMC. Despite what has to be a hectic schedule, they aren’t too busy to converse with fans on their forums…and let them know all is well on PS3 development.

Everyone's fav Dante has something for ya.

Bit sad to be fair ps3 is four years old and people are still not used to it while devs like ND made uncharted 2 in 18mnths and we know it wont be as sophisticated technically

Godmars2904962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

Its sad that a launch title dev is still complaining about PS3 development four years after the fact. With examples like ND, Insomniac and Criterion, who have even done perfect multi-ports.

Never mind that these guys are using an old established engine, likely for all the complaining wont turn out something major or innovative in terms of gameplay.

visualb4962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

developers have been able to take the best out of PS3, including Platinum games (this time around) so any excuse that its too hard to develop for, or problematic, or too complex, its the developers fault.

remember, a bad carpenter always blames his tools, and a bad artist always blames his paints.

what scares me is that, they are already doing damage control, yet no game has been shown =|

solidjun54962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

I wouldn't mind if it was another company who hadn't had much experience with the PS3 or who had limited experience (1 or 2 multiplatform games), but Ninja Theory created a beautiful exclusive in heavenly sword. It was gorgeous. It ran great and I really didn't notice screen tearing. Now, I know multiplatform development is different but with the experience they had and since they are creating the game simultaneously on both systems, I would have not expected this type of issue popping up with regards to Enslaved.

But now with DMC, it just makes you wonder. O_o
Hopefully it's not the case. Still, they have to convince the gaming community that the K.D. Lang version of Dante is going to be "cool."

Why o why4962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

first outing and look how well they handled both consoles with Batman on the UE3. Guess some people are just more dedicated and talented than others... Way of life i suppose

ExplosionSauce4962d ago

Well, UE3 wasn't the most PS3 friendly engine from the start. It's they're fault for making that choice in the first place.

RageAgainstTheMShine4962d ago

Think that this new Dmc does not exist.

There, problem solved.

lexington4961d ago

after 4 years developers are still to blame? Oh please.

blahblah4961d ago (Edited 4961d ago )

fuck, I hit agree by mistake, now i need to clarify

yes, i'm coding for life and i can tell you most coders are lazy. something has to become really, really needed to step into it and it helps if their lives depend on it.

i remember how lazy adoption of xml was in commercial desktop software. all the people i knew were using old and clumsy approach (either database or some binary file) few years after it was starting to get wide adoption. no matter how much time i wasted to explain why xml makes life easier, i couldn't persuade single friend of mine. but when country adopted xml as prefered interchange format for those applications they all moved on. funny thing is... one needed only few hours to get into xml logic, but they were still too lazy to make that step. everyone simply asked same thing... will it sell more for that?

same is with ps3 and its pipelined SPE approach (as far as optimizations go i doubt i can remember one single thing in computing which allows as much optimizing). except this is not few hours tour. one completely needs to adapt his thinking into completely different logic.

i was coding on ps3 linux (just few math apps) while it still existed, so my extent of ps3 knowledge is far from great... but... with every little thing i realized i always got enormous boost. you just have to forget most standard approaches. things like ordinary sync threads for example work piss poor when used in standard wrong manner (pc arch is so much more forgiving, but at the same time way more unreliable for optimizations)

mastiffchild4961d ago

I like a lot of the guys work(Dante redesign is shit, mind)and thought HS was vastly under rated but the fact is that NT are sore about the lack of profit from HS to this day and shouldn't be when Sony basically saved their arses. It had started as, IIRC, an Xbox game that they spunked the advance for and was near death when Sony came in and allowed them to break even. Maybe if there'd been a better amount of PS3 buyers at launch everything would have been fine and their margins would have been bigger but he cannot deny the mismanagement that left them in a mess in the first place.

My best guess is that they still feel bad about losing the IP for HS but had they not been propped up by Sony(who rightly wanted something in return)then maybe we wouldn't be talking about them as a going concern today. I've plenty of time for NT but do feel they have a sore point about Sony when it's basically all their fault.

Trroy4961d ago (Edited 4961d ago )

Yes, developers are "lazy". What that really means is that the businessmen who run development houses don't *like* to have to pay engineers out of their budget, if they can avoid it, because they're expensive.

Hence... middleware. Like Unreal. Hence, bad ports. Like many 360->PS3 quick-n-dirty jobs.

The PS3, pound-for-pound, kicks the 360s arse. Dollar-for-dollar, however, many devs think the 360 is superior. If you see a good PS3 port, its the result of (A) experience on the engineers part -- from a past title which not all game engineers have, especially on the PS3, (B) investment on the part of the developer and publisher, or (C) brilliance on the part of the developer, who goes out of their way to embrace the powerful architecture the PS3 offers (case-in-point -- 1st shipped implementation of MLAA found in The Saboteur, which was a 3rd party multiplat game).

The PS3 is a superior architecture, techincally. The question is, is it superior _economically_, if you're making a multiplat?

More and more devs will work harder and harder to please their PS3 fanbase, as the PS3 fanbase grows, plain and simple.

cliffbo4961d ago

they lost their best programmer and lead artist a while back they are working on Majin a similar title.

ThanatosDMC4961d ago

^What are you talking about? There's only DMC1 and DMC3.

morganfell4961d ago

That is true but this isn't the U3 engine from 2006. It has been fully optimized to run on the PS3 and that tired excuse from NT just doesn't carry any relativity in 2010.

CrIpPeN4961d ago

how can they fuck up Enslave port when Heavenly Sword wasn't?

Danteh4961d ago

I can accept the change n dante's look IF they explain what traumatic event changed his hair to white AND if at the end of he game he's the old ass-kicking Dante again :D

Hehe, I love it. I say you give that finger to capcom too while your at.

hot4play4961d ago (Edited 4961d ago )

Yeah, this whole reboot thing was Capcom's idea in the first place. They just delegated the job to Ninja Theory.

Yokan4961d ago

@hot4play
Your an idiot, what people hate the most is te fact that they changed Dantes image, he's an icon, he represents the badass action hero. Even if Ninja Theory rebooted the game, Its partially Capcoms fault or allowing such a drastic and atrocious change to one of gaming biggest icons.

hot4play4961d ago

^^
@Yokan

Didn't you just contradict yourself?

"Even if Ninja Theory rebooted the game, Its partially CAPCOM'S FAULT or allowing such a drastic and atrocious change to one of gaming biggest icons."

What's the point you're trying to make again?? Stupid. You're the idiot here. lol

Yokan4961d ago

My point being dumbass, is the fact you saying Capcom had nothing to do with the drastic change on Dante, you act as if they had nothin to do here when they do. So I agree give the finger to Capcom and to you as well. Go ahead and shove it up your arsenal while your at it. Dumbass.

hot4play4961d ago

@ Yokan

This will be my last reply to you as I think you do not have the capacity to comprehend a simple message.

Read my first message. Again.
You said:
"you saying Capcom had nothing to do with the drastic change on Dante"
I meant the exact opposite. I was replying to Devil-Hunter and I agreed with him the YES, IT IS CAPCOM'S IDEA/FAULT.
Dumbass. LOL @ you

You don't even have to read between the lines, just TRY to COMPREHEND the things you read next time before posting idiotic replies. Wow. Just WOW. Have a nice day!

DaTruth4961d ago (Edited 4961d ago )

This is the dumbest thing about the internet; No one in real life would hear two strangers talking and just bust in and call one an idiot for his opinion!

On top of that, he called him an idiot and then agreed with him and backed up his point!

EskiJoe4961d ago

Lol, so true and so funny!

The_Devil_Hunter4961d ago

Ladies ladies, what's all the commotion. What's with all the name calling. Try expressing your feelings without name calling. I'm looking at you Yokan.

Zezo4961d ago

┌П┐(•_•)┌П┐

Christopher4962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

I dislike the changes, but I will hold my complete opinion until we see the result through gameplay and storyline concepts.

As far as Ninja Theory... As a company they come off as extremely arrogant. They have some great motion capturing technology at their hands, but the way they bear themselves and their company leaves me thinking that when they and SCE had issues, it was because they wanted more than they deserved. I don't know, but they don't come off as the company that is grateful for Sony keeping them afloat considering everyone thought they were going to close and go out of business until Sony stepped in.

Either way, Ninja Theory, why don't you take some time to learn from exclusive developers like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and Guerilla Games. People you would freely be able to work with and share ideas with if you hadn't been the one current generation exclusive title creator who had problems with Sony (just saying, seems weird that everyone else loves Sony but you).

Christopher4962d ago

***Wanted more than they deserve? What the hell is that suppose to mean? They made the god damn game not Sony.***

It means they weren't happy being a quality exclusive developer when it was Sony who pulled their asses from being unemployed and no longer existent. They got another chance and then they complain when they wasted their budget on their first title and didn't make any profit off of it because of how overboard they went with it.

mrcash4961d ago

I'm sure they have their reasons. It's all business, maybe they don't have the time to learn from ND GG or whoever because they are soo busy trying to make more money. Whatever it is, it's obviously not stoping them from making great games.

Ju4959d ago

Well, I agree with cgoodno. I get the feeling they are great artists and screen writers, but they lack the respect for the technology they are working with. As such, I think there is a disconnect between how they do things from a technological and focus on the artistic perspective instead. That's alright. But they seam to forget, technology is part of what they do and also requires certain investments to succeed. It is a mindset which is hard to grasp if you are not willing to accept that. Shortcutting it and using a "standard solution" (e.g. UE3) will not work. Sooner or later they will have to customize even that solution to fulfill their own artistic vision since no off the shelf middle-ware ever gives you that. They just will learn that the hard way (again).

He is fully aware of the comments he give would garner sensationalist headlines. Have you noticed this guy ALWAYS, have to clarify his statements only leaving us asking more?

I can only suspect he really, TRULY hates the PS3. Here are my reasons:

1. 1.5 million copies on HS is underwhelming.

2. Brilliant engine on HS (released only A YEAR after the PS3's entrance) and yet made no modifications for it to be utilized for their current game, Enslaved.

3. Tries to manipulate the media to hype up his game's visuals and animations to compare to Uncharted 2 (even though it never touched the original Uncharted) and then "clarifies" this is NOT the case. And then further advocates he is considers ND the "best" devs.

4. Early reviews indicate that the PS3 has a lot more issues than the 360 version of this game (EG may confirm this), especially when a reviewer stated that one of the cut-scenes rendered Monkey "invisible". (GamesRader review). Even Rocksteady (Batman: AA) somehow with less experience on the PS3 manages to get it multi-plats right.... THE FIRST TIME.

5. No credit to HS as inspiration or anything of the sort. As if the game never existed in their lives.

6. Giving out heated subjects by claming the PS3's harder without ever clarifying his statements. It always HAS to be after a full flame debate on forums before he responds.

7. And he's not making life any better with his new "concept" of DMC. Saying it's "cooler" than the previous Dante. This may have nothing to do with the PS3 in general, but let's face it.. the franchise started on the PS2.

-End statement

nycredude4962d ago

In his defense I think engine for Heavenly Sword is a propriety Sony engine. Sony funded the development of that ip and I believe is the sole owner of the engine and the source code.

darksied4962d ago

It doesn't have to be because he hates PS3 so much, it could be any number of reasons. Maybe he had a bad experience with Sony on Heavenly Sword, it could have left a bad taste in his mouth dealing with them. Maybe it was too much work for too little reward. Who knows.

jetlian4961d ago

you up... your just mad he isn't on sony ****!!! He never said anything about UC graphics and he wasn't even talking about UC2!! He said our animation will rival UC...1

And the engine for HS is totally ilrelevant. That game is nothing like this one. You only faught in small areas. In this you have wide open spaces and climbing. So your comparasion fails. Hell if you want even UC1/2 aren't as open as this to be compared. UC doesn't have a fighting engine either

Ju4959d ago

Its not a proprietary Sony engine. It is NT code. But what do you want to do with it, if you can't afford the engineers who wrote it? It's just collecting dust on some harddrive with nobody left to maintain it let alone using it to update it.

NT just stfu, no1 cares. They are like doing it on purpose to get in the headlines.

Syronicus4961d ago

Better results attained. The PS3 is the more far reaching console so the more efforts spent the better the games will be. Same cannot be said about any othe console.

Until you show me non-screentearing 60fps on BOTH systems, I'm not inclined to believe you... especially since you're using U3. Blech.

I wonder if Capcom will give the PS3 version special DLC a la DR2... I mean wasn't their reasoning that it's a "thank you" to all the fans who made the franchise a success?

Simon_Brezhnev4961d ago

you know Scamcom wont do such a thing hypocrites at its finest

Cloudberry4962d ago

.
However...

Let's see if Ninja theory & Capcom could pull a 60 fps using Unreal Engine for this game.

TheColbertinator4962d ago

I wouldn't trust Ninja Theory with my lunch let alone Devil May Cry

Apotheosize4962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

Who cares how bad or how well it runs on the PS3. This game is already trash.

BISHOP-BRASIL4962d ago

Exactly, I didn't see people preoccupied over PS3 port, we're all worried that NT has been with this game few months and already destroyed more than half of what fans loved about it.

It's not that we don't trust NT for PS3 version, it's that we don't trust NT period.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC12d ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Exvalos12d ago

What a weird name, it's essentially devil may cry, devil may cry lol

Cacabunga11d ago

Best to good for me: 3, reboot, 1, 5

2 and 4 are trash, didnt like any of them.
5 has very good gameplay variety but i hated the foes.. it is just insects the whole time. Reboot has the best foes for me

Friendlygamer12d ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey60212d ago (Edited 12d ago )

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya12d ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde12d ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

SeTTriP12d ago

This right here is my order as I thought DMC 5 was amazing and obviously 3 comes after 4 was great and 1 for the nastilgic value it holds 2 was so terrible that my local GameStop gave full refunds to people who returned it.
