Lens of truth writes "
Head2Head: Ensalved Demo Screenshot Comparison

Well that was fast! Here we are back again with another Head2Head Screenshot Comparison. This time its the Ninja Theory developed, Unreal 3 engine using, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. The demo for Enslaved: OttW was released yesterday on the Playstation Network, and Today on the Xbox Live Marketplace (here in the U.S.). One things for sure is that this game was loads of fun to play, even with it being only a demo. Check out our HD rollovers after the jump to see which version you should be saving your cash for."

''Both versions looked absolutely beautiful, proving once more that sthe Unreal 3 engine has lots more juice inside. We did notice that both versions had their fair share of screen tearing throughout, but without running it through our analyzer, the exact amount can only be speculation. Based on this demo, Enslaved is shaping up to be a killer app, and the graphics in this build looked almost identical across platforms.''

RudeSole Devil4965d ago

I loved this demo and I love the Unreal 3 engine. uncharted Killer?

FAGOL4965d ago

uncharted killer no way.

StanLee4965d ago

Not even close but the demo was enjoyable. Trust me, Uncharted 2 will be unmatched this gen until we see Uncharted 3.

lastdual4965d ago

Uncharted is a 3rd person shooter. Enslaved is a action adventure in the vien of Prince or Persia. Totally different styles of games.

SeanRL4965d ago (Edited 4965d ago )

Not untouched, but pretty close.

Chucky20034965d ago

it looks the same, some of the shadows are better on PS3 but they are the same,UE3,Uncharted killer?lol, the game looks worse than Heavenly Sword and that is a 2007 launch game for PS3,the game looks really good for an UE3 engine, but its too old, developers need to change it

FACTUAL evidence4965d ago

Uncharted killer is an OVERSTATEMENT. If anything on the 360 HAD to go up against UC2 I would say Alan Wake, and that's still too weak of a comparison to UC2. Anyway, it looks/plays phenomenal of what I've personally played. I will say the ps3 version did look a bit smoother/cleaner. 360's was a little blurry, but I did see some places where the lighting looked a little better. Overall I will tie it, but if you had a choice, I would go with the PS3 version. Since LBP2 is delayed, I'll drop that saved 60$ for this or castlevania. Another good year for gamers I guess.

Pedobear Rocks4965d ago

wouldn't mention Enslaved in the same breath. Stuttery, pop-in, graphics and textures not even close (unless you are only looking tat Enslaved's cutscenes), typical unreal shinyness where it doesn't belong....a fun seeming game but no where near Uncharted in graphics or smoothness.

ThanatosDMC4965d ago

A console can dream... can it?

Dacapn4965d ago

Yeah, you can't call it an uncharted killer. Visually, I thought they were close till I actually got to play Enslaved on my screen.

Don't get me wrong; Enslaved is without question one of the best looking multiplatform console games to date, but if you've played UC2 or at least walked into a best buy or gamestop or whatever and seen the demo, you'll quickly realize that there is an extra layer of polish that really no game has been able to touch besides GOWIII and KZ2(at points).

However, Enslaved looks like it's gonna be awesome. The demo started out pretty slow, and I was actually slightly disappointed in how oversimplified the platforming was, but actually it was the gameplay clips of the game after you finish the demo, that actually piqued my interest. I probably would have been more easily sold on the game if they just released a video of that gameplay rather than the demo itself.

I don't how simple responses turn into freaking essays :/

SaberEdge4965d ago (Edited 4965d ago )

Yeah I agree, Uncharted 2 looks a lot better than Enslaved. But I still think Enslaved is an interesting game that I am looking forward to play. Mainly the characters and story interest me.

Edit: After looking at all the screenshots it seems the 360 version has better quality shadows than the PS3 version. The PS3 version's shadows seem to have banding or dithering. I haven't noticed any other notable differences.

P_Bomb4965d ago (Edited 4965d ago )

Didn't care for the demo. Camera felt, loose, or something. Gameplay wise I was bored before I got outside the plane. I'd rather play the Uncharted demos again.

MaxXAttaxX4965d ago (Edited 4965d ago )

They need to improve the edges a bit on the 360 version, especially around the hair. I don't know what that is... aliasing?
http://www.videogameszone.d...
And also, things like his the tattoo around his lower torso looks a bit clearer on the PS3
http://www.videogameszone.d...
I'm sorry I'm just picking at straws here. Done trolling, they BOTH DO LOOK THE SAME.

moparful994965d ago

In the ps3 version quincunx is obviously in full force.. You can usually tell because you have great texturing and AA but there's a slightly blurred look... However to me in the closeup of monkey the 360 version appeared to have better definition in the facial features ie wrinkles, pores, eye brows... But in the rest of the shots the ps3 sported slightly better texturing.. All and all this game is almost identical on either platform that anything we set apart will just be nitpicking.. I didn't notice much in the way of screen tearing on my ps3 but the frame rate dipped a couple of times.. Like the scene on the wing while the engine is randomly firing before falling off I had some frame rate stuttering.. Wasn't huge but it was there.. hmm overall seems like a great game.. Might have to buy it seeing as I loved heavenly sword.....

Joe Bomb4965d ago

Uncharted Killer? Well maybe the first Uncharted but Among Thieves, your crazy dude!

Bell Boy4965d ago

not from what I played in the demo..didn't actually think it was that great to be honest

gamer20104965d ago

Ok, I have actually played both versions of the demo and I can't believe how dishonest Lens of Truth is being here. The 360 version of the demo has ZERO screen tearing. I even went back after reading this comparison to make sure I didn't miss anything and I carefully panned the camera over and over throughout the demo and there is literally no screen tearing in the 360 demo.

I can't believe Lens of Truth would mislead their readers like this. It's true that in terms of textures, anti-aliasing and lighting there is not much difference between them. The colors are slightly different and the shadow maps seem to be better in the 360 version, but basically all the stuff that shows up in a screenshots is fairly identical.

What isn't identical is the amount of screen tear. The PS3 has significant amounts of screen tearing. I would pan the camera around at random points throughout the demo and there was almost always noticeable tearing in the PS3 version. Again, the 360 version has no screen tearing.

Pretending that the 360 version has screen tearing and that they need to run it through their "analyzer" is downright dishonest. It doesn't take an analyzer to see that the PS3 version has quite a lot of tearing and the 360 version has none, it's plainly obvious. When actual analysis is done the truth will come out.

The PS3 version also seemed to have more stutter in the framerate when I would pan the camera around. I bet frame rate analysis will also prove this to be the case.

Due to the total lack of screen tearing and the lower amount of stutter the 360 version felt more solid and responsive.

Any of you that actually have both consoles I ask that you compare these two demos for yourself if you are wondering which one to get and I guarantee that you will see that Lens of Truth is misleading you. Don't take my word for it either, simply check both demos out yourself and you will see what I am talking about.

starchild4965d ago (Edited 4965d ago )

I haven't had a chance to play the ps3 demo yet, but I can confirm that there is no screentearing in the 360 demo so I dont know why lens of truth is trying to say there is.

pixelsword4965d ago

@ RudeSole Devil:

Gears killer, maybe.

nveenio4964d ago

I didn't like this demo because there were too many interruptions to gameplay. Every time I'd run a little, something else would interrupt gameplay. Run a little, interrupt gameplay. It was frustrating. I just wanted to play. If the whole game is like that, then I think people will be pissed.

MrMccormo4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

I played through the PS3 demo twice and also watched a friend play through it, all on my HDTV. There was maybe one hiccup of screen tearing. I didn't notice any other tearing at all.

I did notice that the explosion effects and other elemental effects (light beams, electricity, smoke) were kinda bad looking but I think that'd be Unreal Engine.

Ju4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

Don't get you guys. That game (err, demo) is outright bad.

A wanna be game and certainly a step back from HS. It has zero improvements over HS. Faces in character models look good, everything else is outright bad. Polyres, textures are low res. A pretty big disappointment, IMO.

It is a typical UE3 game. No triple buffer, no MLAA and typical "glowing" image. Everything closeup is almost decent, everything in the distance is bad.

4964d ago
BattleAxe4964d ago

They did a far better job with Heavenly Sword. I wasn't impressed with the demo.

masterg4964d ago

Comparing this the uncharted is way off.

I enjoyed the demo but to get to uncharted level this game needs:

1. About six months of polish
2. 10 times to animations of make every movement believable.
3. A perfect framerate.

gtsentry4964d ago

wow it jus killed uncharted, were already goin to uncharted 3,they have a lot of catching up to do

come_stains4963d ago

soooo digitalfoundry did his comparison and…

“On the engine-driven cut-scenes, Ninja Theory appears to employ v-sync on 360, with just the odd frame coming in over budget, resulting in an occasional tear at the top of the screen”….

Ahhh yeah soooo occasional is definitely a lot more “The 360 version of the demo has ZERO screen tearing” as you stated. So ask your self??? WHAT HAPPEN HMMMMMMM..... you LOOSE!!!

Like I said LIAR, LIAR, LIAR!!!

And since Digital Foundry is an XBOX fanboy site I’m sure it’s a lot more than “occasional”

colonel1794965d ago

I hate the graphics from Unreal Engine. I am not saying they are bad, or the Unreal Engine sucks, but the way things and people look is always the same (batman, gears of war, enslaved, mortal kombat). I played Vanquish demo after Enslaved and it is a huge difference, the models look cleaner, look more polished. The same with every other engine I've seen except for Unreal.

Now I am not a tech geek, so I am just basing my opinions on what I see.

xxchicago33xx4965d ago

This is a common misconception...they can actually make the character models look anyway they please...but I agree they tend to use stocky overmuscular builds when using this engine.

CobraKai4965d ago

I agree. All UE3 games have a similar look to they way it's rendered that makes it scream UE3.

Baron794965d ago

Nice to see the unreal engine still looking so damn good...and even equal on both platforms.

AKS4965d ago

@ colonel179

I noticed that you didn't list Mass Effect, Borderlands, or Mirror's Edge.

Ju4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

^^ I would think this requires them to customize UE3 which requires engineering skills. Something which costs money and some studios try to avoid. Looks like Ninja Theory went the later route...

UC2 Shambalah FTW. No graphics have even come close. I could not believe that I was controlling Drake at that point. The rain scene best in gaming period. I do not know a PC game that looked as if you wanted or could be there like some of the places in UC2. Enslaved looks very close to a buy for sure a rent. I need opinions and reviews to make up my mind here.

Jazz41084964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

If uc2 did not look so cartoonish it would have easily been great graphicaly. It reminds me of boarderlands with the cell shaded look everytime I play it. I played both uncharted games and I have easily seen better looking games that actually look real and not bugsbunny like. Screen tearing ispresent on the 360 version and I have not tried playing my ps3 version of enslaved since I'm afraid of all the hours of firmware updates I have to look forward too since I have not turned it on in about 6 months.

fuckitimout4965d ago

but get rid of that stupid ass hairstyle of the protaganist. Shit looks like a pineapple. He looks 40 years old for fuck sake give him a buzz cut or unkept survivor style haircut. If he's been enslaved then where the hell is he gettin hairdye for that stupid ass haircut? Damn! It's annoying

Sea_Man4965d ago

Its up there with Uncharted for sure.

JUDALATION4965d ago

But No Multi platform will untill Crysis 2. However God of war 3 Has slightly better graphics than Both. I think Uncharted had such a Unique game style that no other game has so it has been the Bench mark for graphics in Consoles... However God of War has the the most Jaw dropping cenematic graphics on any console in my opinion.

osamaq4965d ago

who said its unreal engine ?????????

its a different engine

djreplay4965d ago

It is the unreal engine, the engine they used for heavenly sword wouldn't run very well on the 360.

Ju4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

They fired most of their R&D after HS and started over with a licensed engine (UE3). HS was a financial disaster for them.

osamaq4964d ago

@ju thank you was helpful bubbles 4 u,

but are you sure enslaved is unreal because its look like HS a lot
and UN3 look a bit different .

Ju4964d ago

I think their HS engine would be on UE3 level today. It is a pity that they stopped investing into technology but went with a standard product instead. Enslaved is UE3 and as such pretty much on the same level as HS (which shows how far ahead HS was at the time).

If you see similarities than these are because the same people who did HS did this game. Obviously a style of a game is more influenced by the people doing it than the technology itself (unless you make the technology part of your design process - which Ninja Theory definitively does not do - or does not know how to do).

INehalemEXI4964d ago

Does not even play or look as good as HS but still they did well for what there working with.

number474964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

Seriously.. People are so reluctant to give the PS3 credit for its amazing AAA games as well as their visual prowess and technical ability. Everyone always wants to get excited over some damn edge, or a slightly blurred frame. Yet no one ever just clearly says the PS3's titles are miles ahead of anything out. Not even 'close' if it was close, you would claim this thing is the Gears/Mass Effect/Alan Wake killer. But you never find that on n4g. I dunno, its just something interesting to point out. Despite the obvious reason this would be compared to Uncharted, everyone claims X game is better than either Killzone2, or Uncharted. Its never a 360 game. THe thing that makes no sense, is these games are used as some sort of console Technical Power calculator.."My version has less tearing ftw!" then the bar/graphics kings are ignored on their own, and the same people claim Alan Wake is just as good, yet don't target it.

units4964d ago

wasnt Quantum Theory hyped up to be the Gears killer

number474964d ago

Units,

No, QT's developers didn't go out claiming its visuals will be better than PS3 exclusives. QT was called a rip off since day one since its literally identical to gears style down to roadie walking. QT was also a gigantic joke from day one, there seems to be some belief on n4g that people hyped it to make it going multiplatform more significant, but since the first post of screens on this game, it was a joke.. Not only that, but anyone hyping QT for being a gears killer would be a ps3 fanboy, and they already have Uncharted to 'kill' gears which it does thoroughly. The hype behind QT was just contrived nonsense.

The art/gamedesign everything was terrible. Hyped by a few people trying to annoy fanboys and drive hits to their site? Sure, but not to the scale of Enslaved, Prototype, Crysis2, etc. Where people keep the popular hype going as well as developer comments, until the release of the retail game, when it under performs, then its off to the next hypefest. Now that enslaved is out of the way.. Its off to Rage and Bloodstorm or whatever the other unreal engine game is...

Sure we can pretend QT was hyped to be a gears killer, but who the hell would think so after seeing any screenshots or videos? Unlike these other games that actually put effort into the titles, and boast claims of PS3 dominance, Techmo did none of this. And thats 1 game to every single graphical hitting Multiplatform title in existence..

And im talking more about the community too... Its clear UC2 is the bar for console visuals, as God Of War 3 is for its genre, each PS3 exclusive dominates its respective genres, and you always see comments littered with people claiming them to be defeated by X.Multiplat blah... and never the other way around.

Dacapn4964d ago

To the unbiased, for console game visuals, there are 3 indisputable games: Uncharted 2, God of War 3, & Killzone 2. There aren't console games that look better than any of those games in or out of their genres.

I see your point when people say X game is an Y killer, but the thing is it's just too easy to go to google, and type Uncharted 2 into google images to find out why those people sound so foolish.

Tempjf4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

Dude your the big fat liar, I took your word for it and downloaded both version like you said and the Xbox 360 version 100% has screen tearing. Maybe not as bad as the PS3 version but its noticeably enough. To be honest both version run like poop. So instead of writing a novel of a comment which bashes a website just get to the point, because nobody really cares what you think.

Tempjf4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

Zero screen tearing on the Xbox 360 you say.
Check these images out for reference.LOLOLO who's the liar now.

n4gno4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

Just another ms employee, ignore him, he's ridiculous in every single articles comments.

they are always in full force on comparisons screenshot's articles (from biased sites most of the time), hoping for a ridiculous (and invisible on a huge tv) difference (in the disturbed minds, a multiplatform, even bad, with a little difference given to xbox, is someway like if they can have uncharted, gow, kz2's graphics on xbox :)), poor pathetics and desperated fanboyz (or employees)

by the way, they was hoping a great games (like ps3 exclusives), but too bad, it's not even as good as the 3 years old Heavenly sword (horribly scripted, you can't lose, it's perhaps the reasons why they like it, the new generation of gamers, especialy on xbox, like casual/arcade games, like cod, etc)

gtamike4964d ago

I didn't like Enslaved it didn't impress me in gameplay or graphics

CryofSilence4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

I ran a personal (read: not factual) tally of which I think is superior for each screen shot. The final tally I came up with is PS3: 7; Xbox 360: 6; Tie: 3.

They're both extremely well off. The PS3 has a bit more pixel definition in some of the environments and on most of the characters (and is a little more blurry on some environment elements--mostly the alpha mapping--strangely), while the Xbox handles shadows and lighting better for most of them. Either way you play it, you win if you like this game.

Both have screen tearing.

Tempjf4964d ago (Edited 4964d ago )

So you too saw screen tearing on the Xbox 360 as well? Because gamer2010 swears "The 360 version of the demo has ZERO screen tearing" even though Lens of Truth has images showing the Xbox 360 version screen tearing. Some people are so ignorant on this site.

@gamer2010

what happened cat got your tongue? Or you know, no matter what you say all of your previous comments posted have been falsified.

Again further proof.

Let me guess these images I linked are false and the Xbox 360 doesn't screen tear on you TV? What ever bro!

come_stains4964d ago

Because of your riDICulous comment I down loaded both version like you insisted....
You fool, they both had screen tearing!... YOU LIED.... You must be blind or have a hidden addenda but either way you slanderous comment fell on deaf ears... Don't worry you fool, the truth will come out and your outlandish and untruthful comments will be overlooked and laughed upon.... hahahahahaha... Get your coins ready for OCT and do your fighting in-game. This is the wrong time of the year to be playing console wars. May be after the Holidays when the dust has cleared and we look back at 2010. Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

Skuletor17d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6917d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno17d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming17d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 10 worst PC ports that ruined otherwise great video games

From Xfire: "It's not unusual to see the occasional bad PC port, but these ones make the bad PC ports look great in comparison."

Kados1024d ago

To be fair with GTAIV, it was a very CPU bound game, released at a time when the vast majority of PC gamers still believed that the CPU was nearly irrelevant, and that you only needed a good GPU. 95% of "gaming" builds back then were using turds for CPUs.

Giblet_Head1024d ago (Edited 1024d ago )

Ya, 2005-2010 was an interesting period. Entry/mid level CPUs have come a long way since then.

RonsonPL1023d ago (Edited 1023d ago )

The "majority" is still just as dumb as before. The game was simply f...d.
It had micro-stutters and never ever ran properly. People who say otherwise simply couldn't see the microstutter because of their LCD display's blurry motion. It should fly in 85fps or 100fps on fastest CPU back then, but it didn't. It was a buggy, awful port. I had a CPU over twice as fast as what x360 had. A GPU 5x as fast. And I couldn't do anything to make it run perfectly.
I don't know who's fault was this. Maybe it was not the developers alone. Maybe it was because of the drivers and the fact nobody gave a flying f..k about stable, high framerate on a PC game. We've had two different OSes then, and as I pointed out, microstutters were not that obvious on an LCD. There was no Digital Foundry to point such problems out and not many people still played on CRT monitors to be able to notice the problem (in like 2 seconds of playing, seriously, you don't need any tools. It just hits your eyes like a speeding truck)

GTA V continued the tradition. It manages the CPU resources so badly, it basically cannot run at locked 144fps till this day, or even 60fps in stereoscopic 3D mode (so 2x 60fps per second) because it's so dependant on single core performance and because it's so messed up by either port devs or Nvidia (who said they will fix it, then 3 years of promises led to shutting the forums down, which solved the problem in their eyes - no one complains anymore ;)

GTA III port was never optimized for even 60fps, not to mention 100 or 120.
The port of GTA V was hidden in their cabinet for almost 3 years, during which PC gamers were bein lied to about it.

See the pattern yet?
Yeah. They don't give a shit about PC gaming or assume a buggy, stuttery mess is good enough, as long as people keep buying the games.

Actually... to think of it. They didn't make a proper Lemmings game for PC either. There was Amiga version and that's it. Only later on they mercifully released Lemmings: Tribes sequel. Until then PC gamers could only dream about digitized (real recorded audio) sounds and music. So this tradition of shitting onto PC gamers is now 30 years old ;)
