Xbox 360 Gets a price cut, will Sony follow?

Microsoft today announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 in Europe, effectively knocking £30 off the price of the standard premium version, making it £249.99 with the Elite coming in at £299.99, now as the Xbox 360 is selling generally well in the UK anyway this news can only boost sales of the console, but what are Sony going to do to combat this?

I would think Sony is going to look at what happens the first month after the price cut. Then take action if needed.

But no matter what happens Im sure Sony will cut the Euro price for the holidays.

The reason sony stated they haven't cut the price in europe already is cos it only launched in march, so ps3 owners who got it at march might feel a little resentful with a price-cut so soon. Fair enough, but the holidays is a good distance since march and an excellent time to cut the price(if not before; like NOW). I think we'll be seeing a price cut soon

Its not likely but not impossible but, if sony could match the price of the elite, that would be a different story. especially leading into xmas depends if there willing to gamble the loss they would take on each console.

I dont see this as an impossiblity as sony still has the ps2 and its games selling well so this could be a viable option

I don't know how many times i asked "Why we Europeans pay almost double the american price of PS3?" And people say "Well exchange rate, tax and so on makes the price higher". Ok i could believe that it is true(and it might is) But than how do you explain this?

Xbox 360 price in Europe is same(more or less) as in USA. PS2 price is same as in states, DS same, PSP close but its not huge difference.

Than comes PS3 and puts so high price that my head spins! All i am saying is that this is very fishy and there is most likely more than just taxes.

But i cant imagine sony dropping it that much if they did i feel at £299 would give ps3 sales the push it needs into xmas and beyond, once the game library is sorted, at £299 it will sell extremly well.

The failure rate is 30% (or around there), that means that you have a 70% chance of buying a working console. Let's say that you are unfortunate to buy a defective console, Msoft will replace it for free if it breaks within 3 years. This means that you can play games for 3 years without paying a cent for repears.
I bought mine last year and it's still going strong. Not one of my friends has a RROD. The problem with this site is that it was blown out of porportion. I admit that it's bad but it is not THAT bad. People not buying a Xbox360 is missing out on some quality gaming -> Gears of War, Bioshock, C&C3, Forza 2, Dead Rising and more. PS3 also has some quality games coming out but there is no reason missing out on some quality Xbox360 gaming.

It hurts really bad when your 360 dies on you the day before Bioshock comes out and I preordered it and it is paid for. I put in the lost planet disc yesterday and as soon as I starting shooting not even 1 minute into the game I heard a beep sound then got three red lights. I turned it off and then back on again without the harddrive and got the same thing. I called Microsoft and they asked if I did the recommended troubleshooting then they gave me a number to put on the box and they are sending me a box to send it in and have it repaired. They said it will be FOUR week turn around. So I will have a copy of Bioshock and Halo 3 that I cannot play until They ship my Xbox back. I am Glad I bought a PS3, and a Wii as secondary boxes or I would be screwed. The warranty is great but dam Why now. I only had my 360 since December 2006.

Sorry to hear about your lost. So, what are you going to play on your PS3 while the xbox 360 is being repaired? With so many games being released on the xbox 360 don't you wish it would be the wii or the PS3 that would be away for 1 month? Don't you wish it would be the PS3 with all those games?

I never had a problem with my xbox 360. But I knew this could happen. I was going to buy myself a PS3 but decided to wait at least until warhawk is released. Instead I bough an elite. It serves two purposes... 1) In case one of my xbox 360 dies I have another one. 2) If my wife is watching tv I can always play on the other xbox 360.

This is obviously very anoying and at least Microsoft is doing the best they can to resolve the problem (now adding heatsink and later falcon).

I plan on buying all multi platform games on the PS3 and the HAlo's and Gears of Wars on the 360 ( Still have to have these games). Right now I am playing Rainbow Six Vegas and Ninja Gaiden on the PS3 and with Warhawk coming out next week I will be fine. I might go to Gamefrog to play Bioshock still because I love that game.

Bladestar I was saying the same thing a week ago that I haven't had any problem with my 360. I didn't expect at all and I would rather none of my systems fail. I hadn't even played it in like a week and I got the red ring in like the first minute of gameplay. i was hoping that people were fabricating there stories but the $hit happens and I always have the a/c pumping when I play mines so it wasn't an abused system.

I dont understand how you can try and make microsoft look like the good guys.

They extended the warrenty great, but they had too it wasnt out of the kindnes of there heart it was the fact they had to or face a recall and court appearings left right and centre.

There doing there best to fix the problem, what by still selling the old design flawed systems without even telling customers at all, also at the same price as the "fixed one's".

But but, there fitting my console i sent in for free, yeh because they have too.

You can love ya 360 as much as ya want and hate any other console, yeh it may have better games atm, it may have a better online servie it may have better triple AAA games.

But at the end of the day microsoft are doing this because they have TO.

I Know many gamers only think about themselves... and that's how it should be. Who cares how much money loses in selling each PS3 or if they ever going to make their money back.

Sadly... decisions made by companies can have a great impact on their stocks and what investors do. Take Microsoft for example, how much just to fix RROD? 1.2 Bil If I am not mistaken (Though I think Microsoft added the price drop on the equation)...

I don't have a problem with Sony dropping the price to $99... but they are a business and as much as Sony fans want to believe that they are at the top of the people that Sony needs to please... It's not true... investors are. Investors don't want to hear that Sony will not start making money on the PS3 for another 2 years or when the next version of the XBox is released because of an early price drop.

Well Sony can blame only themselves for their mistakes. 499 would be great price a year ago, now it is to much(speaking of US market). Why am i saying this? PS3 is suffering for releasing a year after 360, now they have to catch up with them.
Nintendo did it in a lighting speed, for Sony it is going to take much more time. But at the same time Microsoft shoot them selves in the foot by making reputation of having unreliable system that bricks easily and in record numbers. A lot of people were turned off(like me). I admit 360 is great system but only if it didn't die so often. Maybe when they fix that and put 65mn chips in it...i will consider purchase. Wright now i am to afraid of 3 red rings.

Europeans prefer PS3 simply because it's region unlocked. European release schedule is pretty sad, and the amount of games out is just not as robust as the States, due to the smaller market, it makes business sense to make it over the States first. However, with the ability to import English titles from the States online, this is not the case anymore, at least for English speaking PS3 owners. This is why no matter how much you drop it, I, for one, will stick with the PS3, there are more games to choose from.

Yes region unlocked for games, not movies. Not that i care about watching movie(never wathced one single DVD movie on my PS2) but still when you are buying something you want to have it fully functional. You know how they say"Better have it and not need it, than need it and not have it".

I don't think Sony will do anything - yet. It's only £30. It's not going to make the Xbox 360 start flying off the shelves. One concern Sony might have, though, is that the Elite at £299.99 with 120GB and HDMI included will look better than the PS3 to the average shopper that doesn't know anything.

I think we all believe Sony will drop the price lower to the holiday season. I could see that price being around £329.99.

The reliability of the superior hardware, added with the plethora of new releases, and Sony's true love for the European market....They will respond to this. Microsoft does not have a "play catch up" type of lead on Sony. Do your homework fellas....when xbox 1 entered the market, PS2 had sold 28 and shipped 32 million consoles. That is catch up. And by the time Xbox 1 sold 8 million, Sony was at 52.3 or something, no joke.

so,what did sony do?they gave the euro market a bundle offering the same system with 2 games and an extra controller.that is a fair deal.i didn't get(in america) 2 games from sony or an extra controller from sony nov.17 2006.I HAD TO BUY THEM.
