Analysis: PlayStation Brand Reclaims Madden Crown

Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews examines how Sony reclaimed dominant platform-holder status for the Madden franchise, selling around 1 million Madden NFL 11 units across all three PlayStation systems -- after losing its lead to Xbox 360 last year.

wow. I never realized that there was such a direct correlation between PS2 and PS3 sales.

Mr Logic4980d ago

Now they just need to patch in Move controls.

Sheikh Yerbouti4980d ago

Sony has been slowly catching up and surpassing XBox in software sales for some major titles. This really isn't surprising. Maybe next year PS3 alone will surpass the Xbox if this trend continues.

WildArmed4980d ago

I'm sorry, but the author is just grasping straws.
I call it like I see it..

are we going to include PSP and PS1 sales too next?
Oh please.

With that said, is Madden 11 really that good?
I really havn't gotten back into these games since 08 (the last one I bought)

4980d ago
WildArmed4980d ago

Oh, that I didn't read. I just took a glance over the chart.. but saw that the ps3 had less sales than 360.

I'm not one to spend time reading sales figures, but if what you are saying is correct, I retract(?) my comment.

I guess Sony is started racking up MP game sales too :)
Good for Sony.

Oh, I'm sorry if I gave you the impression I was trolling x_x
With everyone on full alert on N4G, I get caught from the both sides and executed for being a spy from the other.

SasanovaS19874980d ago

maybe while ps3 userbase grows every year, the 360s keep rebuying after each one bricks, thus stayin the same year over year

StanLee4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Like millions of PS3 users didn't buy PS3 Slims when they were released and own multiple PS3 consoles? Regardless, the article is reaching at straws. Madden 11 on the XBox 360 still outsold the PS3 version of the title and with Madden 11 little more than iteration over Madden 10 ( . . . Madden 11 is truly garbage; rent it for a weekend, get all the achievements.) and being released weeks before Halo Reach, I don't think you'll find many XBox 360 owners chomping at the bits for Madden 11.

iceman064980d ago

I agree that there was probably a significant bump in sales, initially, from repurchases of the PS3. However, the sustained growth in sales can't be directly correlated to repurchases. It's well known that the 360 was attempting to solve the hardware issues and therefore people were trying to get the most stable console possible. Now, it is probably too early to tell what effect the new 360 model will have on long-term sustainability of sales. As far as the argument of Madden 11 being "little more than an iteration". Well, so was each and every Madden released before. Madden has a really stable community of hardcore football fans. They buy EVERY YEAR because it is NFL football! It's that simple.
I wouldn't make too much out of this article. Madden gained strength on PS3 because more people finally took the plunge (for whatever reason) on the PS3. This, by itself, is not ominous of things to come for the other console makers. However if the trend continues for other high profile multiplatform franchises, then there can be a discussion.

Redgehammer4980d ago

so three different devices VS the 360. lol

badz1494980d ago

1 year head start doesn't ring a bell?

Mr Exclusive4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

I belive you just Killzoned him badz!

(Too early for Killzone 3 jokes?)

kissmeimgreek4980d ago

i dont see a what a year head start has to do with comparing three platforms against one. maybe if it compared year over year but its not.

Sheikh Yerbouti4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Duh...install base?! How come you fangirls whoop up the 360 lead in users when it is only convenient to do so?

Bigpappy4980d ago

I don't see Madden growing anymore on 360. If anything I think they will loose more fans if they don't update that gameplay drastically.

Sheikh Yerbouti4980d ago

You could blame it on the bundle, but these sales don't include the bundle - may the PS3 passed the 360 on it lonesome.

Britney Spears4980d ago

the ps3 version sold very close despite the installed base differences. I think PS3 madden will sell more in a year or 2. PS2 madden sold less this time so they must have moved to PS3.

LordMarius4980d ago

20 million 360 compared to 12 million PS3 and the difference between the Madden sales are around 100k, impressive

Imperator4980d ago

I think it's obvious that the 360 install base is much smaller than the official numbers. A LOT of 360's are probably not functioning anymore given it's very high failure rate. How else would you explain the huge gap in sales? I'm piracy does not account for that 8 million gap.

Anon19744980d ago

Madden probably sells 95% in the US, and the US in the 360's stronghold. Almost 60% of 360's sold worldwide are sold in the US and there's quite a gap between the 360 and PS3. It's amazing that the PS3 is even close when you consider how far behind it trails in the US. I can't see the European or Japanese PS3 owners (who make up 60% of the PS3 sales) being big NFL fans.

commodore644980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Darkride66,

Please refrain from stalking me and attacking me personally with your multiple account 'ColJessup'.

The ps3 has indeed done well with regard to Madden sales.
Does that imply that proportionally more PS3 owners in the US prefer playing armchair sports than the real thing?

fuckoffodion4980d ago

Then again, you rarely make any sense. So the majority of people playing fps on 360 imply that more 360 owners prefer playing fps than going out getting a rifle and doing the real thing.

See, you don't make any sense. I'm not surprised from a troll like you.

Bzone244980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

A larger percentage of the Xbox 360 install base are smartening up, playstation owners haven't yet. I won't buy another NFL video game until ea loses it's exclusive rights.

nnotdead4980d ago

i haven't bought an NFL game since 2K5. don't know if i ever will again.

Apotheosize4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Why is this suprising, 3 platforms vs 1. America is where the 360 sells the best, and we all know no one else cares about Football

Oner4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

You are wrong. Look at the attached chart and you will see that in 2008, 2009 & 2010 that the PS3 (Red) was well below the 360 (Green) for those years, whereas the COMBINED amount of the PS3, PS2 & PSP where greater than the 360...BUT every year you see the PS3's GROWTH UP TO 2011 where it is basically tied with the 360. So by itself it has caught up and that is the point of the article. Not about the previous years combined sales. This is about looking current/forward not dwelling on the past.

Freshnikes4980d ago

What we should be talking about...is all these ppl buying a dlc fo $60 ...wow not me not this year they got me for 5 straight years but I have seen the light....

Lord Gunchrote4980d ago

Amen...they should just have inline madden servers and charge a subscription like they already are.

Political Pixels - 10 US Presidents In Video Games

There’s no doubting the impact that this week’s Presidential Election has had not just on the US but the whole world. While we can’t forget the result (be it good or bad, depending on your political leanings) we can at least distract ourselves with a few good old fashioned video games.

EA Loses in Madden Lawsuit Verdict – Jury Rules Statute of Limitations Has Not Run

A jury in U.S. District Court today ruled in favor of Robin Antonick, the original designer and developer of Electronic Arts’ (NASDAQ: EA) best-selling Madden NFL Football games.

terminalgamer.com
US8F3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

ouch, how many millions do EA owe Robin Antonick?
$200 million in revenues for games released between 1990 and 1996

Damages relating to 1997-2013 games will be tried in a subsequent phase of the trial. (I suspect $600 million more, just averaging out)

That is ALOOOT OF MONEY

EA is going to have to compensate 800 million dollar's worth!. Who wants to bet the next big EA title would be pay to win?

-Mika-3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

This is not a good thing, That is alot of money. This could lead to alot of game cancellations and like you said. Alot of DLC. Gamers should not be happy about this. This could possibly destroy the biggest third party publisher in gaming.

THamm3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

Well they pulled exclusive NFL deals and all kinds of anti competition pay outs, they need to change their ways and make better games, and the greedy NFL should too because they are next with the concussion lawsuits. Face it, Madden is boring and always has been, bring back 2k, Tecmo, heck even Konami

Theyellowflash303968d ago

I don't mind EA going down one bit.

pixelsword3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

They should have paid him when they had the chance. I don't care if this cancels all of their games and they close for good, you pay a man when they earn the money.

Enigma_20993968d ago

*plays wold's tiniest violin...*

Let's look back on how EA has treated employees, gamers, and competitors over the years. The only thing that would make this better is if they got Activision too.

Want some tissue?

ZeroX98763967d ago

Titanfall, battlefield 4 and plants vs zombies 2 seems to be amazing games. I hate what they did with most of their sports franchises, but they're still doing some good stuff here and there.

losing the sports franchise exclusivity would be great. I'd like to see competitors effort in sports franchises, like sony is doing with MLB and 2K with NBA 2KXX series.

noctis_lumia3967d ago

which is good
EA can go fck themself

Clearly you didn't read the article very well.

"The jury will determine what to award Antonick in allegedly unpaid royalties from more than $200 million in revenues for games released between 1990 and 1996"

EA made $200m in TOTAL between '90 and '96 off of the Madden series. Antonick isn't getting paid $200m. He's going to get a smaller percentage of that money, not the whole thing.

iceman063968d ago

He'll get paid that percentage. But then there is always the "damages", if sued for, which could very well be that $200 million mark. Juries LOVE to punish big companies for trying to get over on the "little" guy.

ftwrthtx3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

Antonick might be seeing hundreds of millions of dollars with this.

knifefight3968d ago

Plus 10 more every time someone plays online!

NYC_Gamer3968d ago

i hope dude wins the case if EA is at fault

-Mika-3968d ago

Why would you want him to win. This could seriously damage them. If this guys win hundreds of millions of dollars. This could lead to alot of game cancellations. As a gamer, You should not want that.

DragonKnight3968d ago

Who cares about EA? They are a blight on the industry. They think their size grants them power over everything and everyone. It'd be sad for the people who were the working class stiffs losing their jobs, but I don't give a damn about the greedy executive losers responsible for trying to screw everyone over.

Sarobi3968d ago

"Why would you want him to win"

If EA is at fault than they deserve to pay up. So what if a few games get cancelled?.. you can't just screw people over the money you owe them.

MrSwankSinatra3968d ago

first off business is business, if EA owed me money i'd sue their asses too. if EA has to cancel games, they should've thought of that before not paying people they owe in the first place.

rainslacker3968d ago

He won't get hundreds of millions of dollars. Learn to read, and read what was written. Total revenues for the games were around $200 million, this guy won't be getting all that.

Also, I'm a gamer. But I also believe companies should pay what they agree to pay. If they didn't, then they should be sued.

I'm all for more games getting made, but that doesn't mean I'm going to say a company should do whatever they damn well please, all while screwing the guys that did the work.

Your so concerned about the developer? Well this guy was one of them. He did the work. Now he deserves to be paid.

iceman063968d ago

Because he DESERVES it!!! Screw the damage and don't think that cancellations will come from this. There is a fund that most companies have just for these things.

badboy7763968d ago

Does this mean NFL 2K is back???????????

ftwrthtx3968d ago

It would be nice if someone could compete with EA. Not much new is added every year for Madden and having someone else putting out a game might force their hand a bit.

dedicatedtogamers3968d ago

I'd love to see Sony or SEGA do a Football game. SEGA has the pedigree (or does that studio belong to someone else now?) and Sony has been doing baseball for quite a long time.

THamm3968d ago

SEGA was the pub, Visual Concepts are the devs. They are owned by Take Two and are the makers of 2K sports games

ftwrthtx3968d ago

If they could use the MLB: The Show team and engine for an NFL title, I'm pretty sure it would be the best on the market.

punisher993968d ago

You know Sony used to do football games. Remember NFL Gameday on the PS1? That was from 989 studios which was one of their 1st party studios.

Rainstorm813968d ago

Punisher you beat me to it ...game day on ps1 was my go to football game

iceman063968d ago

@ftwrthtx...I'd rather let the Visual Concepts (2K Sports) guys run the show. Their games were excellent and still stand up pretty well today.

ftwrthtx3968d ago

@iceman As long as it's not the team behind the MLB 2K series. Those games don't even come close to The Show.

Outside_ofthe_Box3968d ago

I hope and pray it does. Madden is proof of what lack of competition does to the industry.

badboy7763968d ago

Yes and No. EA bought the licensed NFL they didn't earn it. Unlike how NBA 2K made NBA Live stop production and start from scratch.

Outside_ofthe_Box3968d ago (Edited 3968d ago )

You are agreeing with me. Madden has no competition at all due to NFL license exclusivity and thus now we have lack luster Madden games every year because they have no one to push them to do their best.

On the other hand NBA2K at the moment has no competition, but that's only due to them ACTUALLY COMPETING in the first place with the end result being them having a superior product to sole competitor in Live. This lead Live to essentially quit for two years in an attempt to finally make a product that can out due NBA2K. That is what I call competition.

Thanks to EA NFL monopoly, 2K or any dev for that matter can't make a competing product at all even if they wanted to.

There is a difference between have no competition because nobody is allowed to compete and having no competition due to just being so damn good.
