IGN - Halo: Reach AU Review

The scale of the battles is far bigger in scope in Halo: Reach, allowing us to witness some pretty amazing scenes, including one where you're manning a gun turret in a chopper as it flies over a battle involving scores of Warthog jeeps and Scorpion tanks facing off against the Covenant in a land battle. Above this battle, the sky is thick with Banshee-on-Falcon dogfights, while, further in the distance, an immense Covenant mothership is bombarding the planet. It's absolutely epic stuff.

I am a playstation fanboy but this game looks good.

Makes me wish I would have won the Halo Reach contest.

saint_john_paul_ii5007d ago

to be honest, you're right. i also like how the reviews sound like they are not riding on the hype, but a true honest review. not to mention the game's story sounds really good, like Halo:CE.

DarkTower8055007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

I've been reading from different reviews that if Reach has any weak spot, it's in the single player. But to be real, people buy Halo for the multiplayer, and the single player is just icing on the cake.

GWAVE5007d ago

The single-player story is meh, IMO (after seeing the spoiler videos), but I am incredibly excited to play through the game co-op with all of the available tweaks to the game structure.

el zorro5007d ago

From the IGN review:
"The campaign is excellent, backed by solid storytelling and a powerful audio-visual experience."

Doesn't sound like they agree with you.

StanLee5007d ago

The problem with most reviewers who had complaints about the single player campaign is that they played the game on normal which is Halo's easy mode and always has been. There is a huge divide between normal difficulty and heroic and heroic is Halo's sweetspot.

RockmanII75007d ago

^^^ Heroic is probably too hard for them, lol

Lifendz5007d ago

Release date delivery for the effing win! The only drawback to getting Reach is being limited to playing because of school. Can't wait though. Great reviews across the board.

callahan095007d ago

About the difficulty of Halo, does this game have a non-regenerating health situation like ODST? I have avoided learning much about this game, I know it has nice graphics and jetpacks and that's about it, so when I play it I will be going in fresh for the most part, which is how I like to approach my entertainment (books, movies, games, I don't like to know too much before I get to experience it first-hand). But in this case, there is some information I guess it would be useful to know in advance that I haven't been able to learn while avoiding info. The health situation is one of those questions.

I found ODST to be a much, much more difficult game than the other Halo games because of the health. I found the game to be actually very hard on the normal difficulty. It probably wasn't as hard as it seemed like it was, but I just could not get used to playing Halo without regenerating health. In order to be successful, I had to completely rethink the way I was supposed to be playing Halo, which was tough to do. I hope Reach has the normal regenerating health again.

ginsunuva5007d ago

I've played the singleplayer.
It's slightly disappointing considering Bungie's hype.

The story is nothing special at all.
The covenant come. Everyone dies. Reach falls.
No plot twists or anything.

I'm trying to figure out what Rihanna said to Katy Perry. I keep imagining at the end of the gif they'll just start making out.

Oh YES. I saw that happen at the VMAs and thought THAT must be made into a GIF!

of course this review isn't honest. The site depends on its advertisers to stay alive. They're reviewing a game thats advertising on their site. You don't bite the hand that feeds ya. This is hardly an honest review without even having to read it.

RockmanII75007d ago

Most of the reviews have been 9/10 or higher.

SonyPS3605007d ago

You not heard of the famous Kane and Lynch review on gamespot?

It was advertised all over the website and got below 7/10 on said website.

Darkfocus5006d ago

bad example that review is famous for having the score raised because of the advertising...

outrageous5007d ago

I really like the idea of a surprise attack and everybody thinking it was rebels causing problems when in reality the covenant was attacking Reach. The story seems ( Haven't played it yet ) to be really emotional with moments of suspense like going and talking to farmers about " disturbances " that have been reported. The art direction looks incredible and having 3 of your friends along for the ride is the cherry on the cake.

The story is epic in a Titanic type of way since everyone knows how it ends but like a car crash, you can't help but look. I thought the commercial really captures the moment when all was lost, Nobel team being divided and the eventual destruction of Reach. I don't see how anyone, let alone gamers could be negative towards a game like Reach.

Here's the live trailer...If Marty doesn't win some sort of award for this soundtrack then there is something seriously wrong with gaming...Kat looking thru the broken visor was incredible...

I thought they gave it a 10. Anyways, great score.

Doletskaya5007d ago

I thought it was a 10 originally, but 9 is still a good score.

Good to see that Ign is finally not giving Halo Reach's graphics a 9.5+ cause I really don't understand how that's justified given that there are way more better looking games on the market.

the 10 was awarded by uk ign

danmachine5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

SaberEdge5007d ago

The graphics are really good though, so why wouldn't it deserve high marks in that area?

-Alpha5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Games don't have to be technically superior to be awarded high marks for graphics. In Reach's case Bungie may not have aimed for an artistic rendition, but that doesn't mean the game does not look great or have artistic merit. A lot of games pride themselves on artistic beauty. Games like Okami, Ocarina of Time, etc. will never show their age or at least can hang around with even the most technically superior game. That difference really needs to be understood by gamers who seem fascinated only with games that try to look as realistic as possible.

despair5007d ago

except Halo has some of the most generic looking environments and character models(except covenant ships and characters mostly) ever. I mean the world is bland with generic and nondescript buildings and for some reason bungie never can get humans to look good, the human ships and vehicles are ugly in both design and originality, with many looking like it was made to look like a block of iron.

Also the actual main characters having very nondescript armours does not help, at least this time we get to see the spartans without the helmet on, except Noble 6(if I'm not mistaken).

Halo designs have become borderline cliched and people keep trying to defend it. I have not seen enough difference from Combat Evolved straight through to ODST and now, though somewhat less, in Reach to warrant artistic merit.

At least Okami and Ocarina of Time were standouts and unique but this would fade into the background except for the Halo name(graphics I mean).

lowcarb5007d ago

This score although good doesn't make any sense.

Allowen5007d ago

it is complicated to give points for graphics and sound.

Reviews should make sub categories for graphics such Art design , level of detail (polygons), frame rate etc.

Art direction seems more important then how many thousands of polygons is in the face of a character for the reviewes at least. And I agree with that in part.

that is why Halo Reach got lots of 10s so far because of the beautifull art direction. Same like games such Mario Galaxy 2 or God of War3 in 2010.

But yah, as a PS3 fanboy I would say that UC2 ,tecnically speaking, destroyes Halo Reach because it has more body animatiom, facial animation, lots of beautifull cut scenes etc.
But when you consider "art direction" category then UC2, Metroid Prime 3m MG2, GoW3 or Valkyria Chronicles are "equaly"beautifull.

I respect that and grats to the Xbox360 users for getting an awesome game !

gamer20105007d ago

Depends on which aspect you are looking at. There are ways that Halo Reach "destroys" Uncharted 2 on a technical level. For instance, in terms of the scale, the open levels and the numbers of vehicles and enemies on screen at one time are all much greater in Halo Reach than in Uncharted 2.

Bungie Replaces Marathon Director Amid Leadership Shakeup, Fears of Layoffs

Amid ongoing anxiety within Bungie following layoffs last year, the studio is now preparing for another shakeup, this time on Marathon.

Kaii70d ago

Layoffs should be hitting the incompetent management at this point.

Profchaos70d ago

Talk about mismanaged Bungie is a studio of tremendous potential and have made some of the greatest shooters to date. Sony pushed them to just make another Destiny style game and consult on other studios live service games and are now getting thrown under a bus as the pivot away from predominantly gaas games is unfolding.

I'd love to see a world where Bungie can focus on telling great sci fi stories again away from a live service dungeon but we all know that's a pipe dream

Rynxie70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

Are you serious? Do you just talk out of your arse naturally, or did it take years of being a POS?

Profchaos70d ago

You normally get so offended by internet comments or did it take years of being soft

purple10170d ago (Edited 70d ago )

Yes I see your point mate, someone clearly didn’t read the article.

Specifically the bit:

“Notably, multiple sources at the time and since have shared that Sony has largely left the studio to sort out its own troubles and was not responsible for the layoffs, with CEO Pete Parsons taking responsibility.“

He’s just spouting nonsense

Huey_My_D_Long70d ago

lol what so fucking hilarious is that you called him out so bad he projected him being offended onto you.

Its been well documented that Bungie's management has been more responsible for their shortfalls, even mentioned in said article that we are commenting on.

Its ok, just admit you didn't read the article.

MIDGETonSTILTS1770d ago

Arrowhead Studios will be Sony’s GaaS consult now.

Gameseeker_Frampt70d ago

I like how for some, it is never Bungie's fault. Microsoft, Activision, and now Sony - it is everyone else who is pushing Bungie to make all these bad decisions.

-Foxtrot69d ago

Thrown under the bus?

Are you joking? This is all Bungie, we all thought it was 100% Activision but it's clear the higher ups at Bungie don't have a clue how to run the studio and are more bothered about saving their own skin and the money that they rake in.

Sony gave them an extra $1.2 Billion to make sure that employees didn't leave and they didn't have to cut anyones jobs. Where did that money go because Bungie still cut peoples jobs and I bet you the higher management still kept a hold of their big fact paychecks and bonuses.

Sony invested poorly in this and the best thing they can do now is throw the old Bungie management out and take hold of the studio fully.

MIDGETonSTILTS1769d ago

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Somebody at Bungie is the golden goose making great shooting mechanics, and the rest need to justify their paychecks.

This studio has had three owners and its never worked well with any of them....Management has issues

ChasterMies69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

Worked very well for Microsoft. Microsoft’s mistake was letting Bungie go.

Fearmonkey68d ago

it worked so well with MS that they so wanted to be away from them they bought the company back. Only to do it again with activision-blizzard, and then sold to Sony...Sony shouldn't have bought them...Bungie hasnt been the same for a long time..
