DIYGamer: Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale Review

DIYGamer: "Next time you’re off galavanting around a massive RPG world, slaying monsters and fulfilling your destiny, spare a thought for the shopkeeper in the last town who sold you all your gear. Without them, you’d be a nobody – you’d have no sword, no armor, no healing products. Confined to a live of standing behind that counter, all for your benefit.

Except that, thanks to satirical shopkeep-em-up Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale, we now know the truth – RPG shopkeepers lead an even more exciting life than their customer heroes. Recettear is a wonderfully unique take on the genre, with great dialogue and plenty to see and do. It can be a little too difficult to begin with, but stick at it and you’ll find one of the best RPGs of the year."

The fact that you think Castlevania is a role playing game makes any opinions you have suspect at best.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2436d ago (Edited 2436d ago )

>_> A good number of Castlevania games are role-playing games, yes. I'm not referring to the NES etc. Castlevanias, I'm referring to the entries that are RPGs like SotN and AoS. And if you still argue that the latter isn't an RPG, then I guess I would question what exactly qualifies as an RPG. Is it turn-based combat? I should hope not, because a number of games on this list do not have that. Same with random battles. If it's leveling up, Castlevania has that. If it's customizing you weapons and armor, Castlevania has that. If it's character growth, Castlevania has that in numerous ways. This is not some situation like how The Legend of Zelda is considered an RPG, Castlevania straight up fits the bill. RPGs can be adventure games, or platformers, or any other genre. It seems kind of like a waste of time to make a list of RPGs that is just going to fulfill a very narrow definition of what an RPG can entail, so if that is what you want, I guess you will have to look elsewhere. I like to keep my subject matter interesting.

Last_Boss2436d ago

Not saying you're wrong, but I always put any castlevania still as action adventure, just like I put Yakuza as action, even though they both have stat management. It's the core of the games I initially look at.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2436d ago (Edited 2436d ago )

I definitely concur that there is a certain degree if overcategorization of any game with RPG elements as being RPGs thus diluting it, but my perspective is less that Castlevania is not an action/adventure game like you said, and more that its RPG elements are 1/3 of the core. I think that Cy's issue (beyond an embarrassing user profile) is that they simply have a certain perspective that doesn't really work. For example, what exactly makes the Mana games RPGs? They are definitely Action RPGs, but they're also adventure games and could reasonably be called Action-Adventure games with RPG elements. AoM is no more or less an RPG than modern Castlevania games, but they took a fairly narrow look at what an RPG can be and dismissed only one of them.

Not arguing against you, your perspective is entirely valid.

nitus102436d ago

I think replying to what you said is extremely difficult and any reader should read https://en.wikipedia.org/wi... as a starter and even if they do the term RPG can still be confusing.

The only Zelda game I would consider an RPG is "Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link" which allowed the user to control the stats associated with Link. While I have not played all the Zelda/Link games most don't allow the user to change Links stats unless you count weapons, armour and skills which could be considered as part of RPG elements.

Personally I would consider the Zelda games (exception Zelda 2) as Action/Adventure but how would you describe games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne which allow you to actually change the stats associated with the particular character you are controlling?

LOL MGSV, a role-playing game? That made me laugh.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2436d ago

I admit to being entirely ignorant to Metal Gear, but I guess I'd be curious to hear the thought process behind why V is an RPG.

Gamist2dot02436d ago

"A role-playing game (sometimes spelled roleplaying game and abbreviated to RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting."

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5077d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905077d ago (Edited 5077d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5077d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5077d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495077d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5077d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5077d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
