Mafia 2: Graphics fails even at maximum quality

In the PC version of Mafia 2 you will get a lot of graphics fails, especially textures, color banding and low poly objects. That's pity because some parts of the game really look great. PCGH has 37 screenshot proofs.

Why would the graphics NOT fail when you increase the resolution?

BannedForNineYears5007d ago

Congrats. Your comment makes absolutely no sense.

Theo11305007d ago

At 1920 by 1080 the textures still look great. It's one of the best looking game world out there, and as open world games go it is. Especially on pc, where it looks fantastic on max settings, but I still wouldn't use pysx, it drains fps like nothing out there.

Theonetheonly5007d ago

this game takes a graphics engine where gta 4 couldnt hope to go. better optimization, better physx, better ambient occlusion.

i think these guys are full of crap.

one or two textures in an open world game that puts many others to shame on pc. these guys are downright irresponsible.

tdrules5007d ago

Well it still looks the "best" out of them, if that means anything...

JsonHenry5007d ago

I haven't bought the game yet. Gonna wait for a STEAM sale like always. However, a lot of PC games it is just a matter of going into the game files and setting the max texture rez to a higher than the default values. Is this an option in this game?

yewles15007d ago

This game's steam is starting to die out, quick.

8-bit5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

I was never really interested in the game, then after hearing about the half ass'ed PS3 version I had even less intention to buy it.

There is no reason what so ever for multiplat games to look worse on PS3 other than lazy ports and I refuse to support that.

starchild5007d ago

I guess 95% of developers are lazy. That's it! It couldn't be that the PS3 isn't as powerful as Sony have claimed or that it has a difficult, unwieldy architecture.

When 95% of multiplatform games are better on the 360 it's just ignorant to blame it on "lazy developers".

T9X695007d ago

There is no way those screens are taken from the maximum quality, my 360 version looks better than that. I've seen screens taking from the highest settings and they look much better than that.

JsonHenry5007d ago

The PC demo I played seemed to have looked better than that as well. But I could just be remembering wrong.

nycredude5007d ago

You guys are correct in your assessment. I finished the game on my gaming laptop and I can't attest that those screens are being played on an inferior computer. or maybe set at 720p. There is no way those are the highest settings or even higher resolution.

ProjectVulcan5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Seriously are they going to seek out every slightly rough looking texture or effect? We arent at photorealism just yet....you could do that with pretty much any game you care to mention.

The game isnt the greatest looking on Pc but generally it looks rather pretty overall, the lighting and soft shadowing in particular is lovely whether its day or night, snow shine or sunset. The car models are gorgeous and the main textures are pretty nice looking, some of the surfaces are nailed rather well, especially shiny ones: http://i731.photobucket.com...

This shot http://i731.photobucket.com... shows some nice effects like the tread marks in the compacted snow which look raised in headlights, parallax mapped. The snow sticks to the cars, building up a coating slowly. It even collects on roofs of them and slides off in one big lump when you accelerate! The road looks shiny with melted water/ice, the SSAO is subtle and adds good depth. The car damage model is rather well done and better than a lot of so called sim racers.

Not the most stunning games by any means, but certainly a long way from dodgy looking on PC. Play R.U.S.E and point out its rather shoddy looking visuals, get back to me...

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya476d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney476d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled476d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist475d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin476d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled476d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE476d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi476d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE476d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
