Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 enhanced with motion blur looks way better

With motion blur games look way more realistic. Especially in scenes with lots of action, the effect works really well. Following video shows a comparison with and without motion blur in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

True motion blur is done per object.

That way bullets flying by will be blurred correctly depending on speed and angle.

While as you turn the camera things that move by quicker will be more blurred in its corresponding direction than others.

Take a look at Killzone 2 for good motion blur. Some other games did it great too, but can't think of any right now.

Motion blur sucks. It is the most gimmicky pointless graphical feature i've ever seen.

You want motion blur...cap the game at 30 frames, there is your motion blur. People that think motion blur makes games look better or more realistic must have chronic eye sight problems or some kind of accute vertigo or inner ear balance problem when they move.

i agree with this. i prefer if the motion blur was naturally generated, say, from a fast moving image. i turned it off in just cause 2 and mass effect because it ruined the graphics for me. too bad i cant turn it off in mass effect 2 tho, but at least it wasn't as bad as the one in me1.

Exactly, the only motion blur we experience is when we turn so fast that our eyes cannot take the image in enough to keep it clear...and even a game at 60 frames will do this blurring effect because 60 frames is not enough to maintain a fluid picture when you turn fast in a game.

Human eyes can detect over 200 frames per second. I myself can see a huge difference between 50 and 60 frames, let alone 30 and 60...yet you have people praising addition blur on top of games already capped at 30 frames ( insane blur when turning by default ).

If you have ever used a CRT monitor...you will know the difference between 120 frames and 60 is massive.

Motion blur goes against the goal of realistic graphics. The only reason it exists is to mask poor texture streaming etc in games. Not for graphical improvement.

Vanquish has a ton of motion blur, but given the crazy nature and over the top theme of the game, it seems to match it.

Really? I think motion blur is a pretty dam important feature in modern games.

It gives the illusion that the game is running at a higher framerate than usual, and can cover up certain background details the console may not be able to run very well.

And also, the resolution of the game can be slightly lower (covered up by blur), allowing more details to be put into the environment.

And no, that was not a troll attempt. I think a slightly lower res game with plenty of blur looks better than a full res game without any. I value the smoothness of movement.

But then again, I know i'm in the minority.

You mean the people who stand in a remote corner of the map so that one of them can just continuously kill the other until he gets a nuke?

I have seen that at least a dozen times. You can always tell when one guy on your team has about the same number of deaths as the top guy on the opposing team has kills, or vice versa.

Let's not forget that (from my experience), the majority of the CoD community will exploit any glitch they can get their hands on. Glitches would not be that bad if everyone and their brother did not go out of their way to exploit them. You can be sure that CoD players will though. Got to get those easy kills.

Oh and if there are no glitches to exploit, they can just dual-wield shotguns, abuse the hell out of the knife, or spam M203 grenades until the end of time.

Oh and hey I guess it is perfectly fine for the headshot hitbox to extend past the actual head.

Edit: Face it, your average CoD player is going to abuse every cheap tactic and exploit that he can in order to preserve his precious stats, or to get titles. And if you were even considering trying to find any semblance of teamwork you might as well just hang that idea up.

What i mean is that it's very easy to get a tactical nuke via cheating. For example, there's always a retard that overuses the grenade launcher, or abuse the knife = Comando Pro+ lightweight pro+marathon pro. Or by using the models 1897 akimbo or whatever it's called. And guess what? Tactical Nuke...

@assassinHD harrier strike + attack helicopter= tactical nuke. They made it really easy to get tactical nukes, it wasn't like this in COD 4

Oh I know that there are people who get legitimate nukes with the harrier/attack chopper (especially with Hardline). I do not mean to take anything away from those people. I have witnessed people cheating their way to nukes though, which is especially sad considering that it is not all that hard to get a nuke the right way.

Depends on what kind of motion blur though, the conventional camera based motionblur can be distracting as it blurs the whole image, whereas object based motionblur used in KZ2, UC2, GOW3 and Vanquish vastly improves the game's look in motion.

blur didnt suck for me tho, i enjoyed it a lot. shame it didnt sell too well, but whatever hurts activision's wallet. it's one of those rare 4-player split screen games. nice to see a friend's reaction when i used power ups against them.

Motion blur is a great way to make something look as though it were viewed from a Film Camera. If you take your hand-held Camera and move it quickly in one direction or the other you'll notice extreme motion blur until the auto-focus kicks in. Motion blur has been incorporated in just about every single movie special effect that you have ever viewed. It's used to help sell realism and as others have noted to create the illusion of a higher frame rate. As for blurred background, that is a different effect called Depth of Field. This effect is also used in movies/photography and is another Cinema technique meant to imitate how a Camera 'racks focus'. Killzone 2 uses the effect nicely when in iron sight view, you'll notice the gun gets blurry. It's a great technique for First Person Shooters because it guides your eye to the important stuff, such as enemies.

Now I'll agree it's not realistic per say(as in how humans perceive reality), and admittedly it's sometimes overused but I do believe it has its place, especially when mimicking Film.
