I was on the fence for this game, but after reading the g4 review and watching the game trailers review, I have no desire to play it. It looks they're ruining Samus as a character and I don't care to experience that. I'll just stick with Metroid Pime and Super Metroid.

Millah4991d ago

If you're a fan of Metroid, and you honestly think that G4s (my god, of all places) or Gametrailers' reviews are the final word on this game, then you're a fool. I have been playing this game non-stop the past two days, and its fantastic. I like it better than Prime, simply because it feels more like a proper Metroid. If you like Super Metroid, then you shouldn't even question whether you should play this game.

But seriously, any true Metroid fan wouldn't be listening to G4 of all places.

hatchimatchi4991d ago

Well, I kind of worded that wrong. It wasn't necessarily the reviews themselves, (gametrailers scored it high) it's the footage I saw of how Samus is being portrayed. It just seems stupid to me.

Samus has been saving the galaxy since day 1 but now she has all these issues which have never been brought up before and shes afraid of ridley. This is the second to the last game in the storyline, so she's already fought ridley 4 times. Why would she be scared of him?

I was staying away from news on this ever since it got announced cause I didn't want any spoilers but now that I've seen clips and whatnot, it just looks really bad imo. Not so much the gameplay but just how Samus is portrayed. Samus has always been the #1 badass when it comes to female protagonists, I don't care so see her act as a hopeless girl taking orders from some faceless military guy.

swice4991d ago (Edited 4991d ago )

Ya know, there were limitations on the animations in the early hay-days of Metroid. How do we know that she wasn't scared? Because the sprite didn't show it? She seemed pretty emotional to me in the opening of Super Metroid.

I mean look at Fusion: She was bitter toward the Computerized Adam and disliked taking the orders. But once she found out it WAS Adam, you see her eyes widen, a lot. This obviously brought back some memories and emotions that we have no idea about (but will soon).

All I'm saying is that it boils down to your personal view of Samus. A lot of us are going to be wrong, because the devs can't please us all. Just try having an open mind when playing and look at it from her point of view. She's been through a lot. She's still mostly human.

I mean the Baby Metroid killed itself for her, and she had to blow up Zebes, where she grew up with the Chozo. Plus the murder of her parents.
How would you feel if you had to blow up Earth and your child sacrificed itself for you? I'd be pretty emotionally-scarred and a little freaked.

stragomccloud4991d ago (Edited 4991d ago )

Honestly.. I don't think so.
Tell me... if you're parents were killed, are you saying you wouldn't have issues? And then, are you saying that if the Chozo people who then adopted you were all killed, and everyone you ever knew died, you wouldn't have even more issues?

Just because she is a super badass, doesn't mean that she is dealing with some serious demons. In fact, it's those demons that helped to make her the super badass she is. Think about it, every time she sees space pirates, it reminds her of what they did to her family, AND her adopted family. It's natural that after becoming a soldier in the Galactic Federation that she would become attached to some sort of parent-type figure.

I'm glad they finally touched up on this. Samus Aran is human. She's not a robot. No matter how tough someone is, they will always BE human. some people don't like when heroes, especially of mythic proportions are humanized, but sometimes, that makes them more relatable, and more realistic. Sorry, if you and a number of other reviewers were looking for something more in line with a female Master Chief.

Also, add to the fact, this story is also canon. This IS Samus. So, you just have to get used to it. I don't say that to be rude. I only mean to say, that sometimes there are things in this world that people have to accept. And this is one of those things.

hatchimatchi4991d ago

But why now? If this game was a prequel all these things would have made complete sense. But it's not a prequel. Samus has already saved the galaxy like 5 times over. I find it stupid, and if this is how samus is going to be from now on then I'll just stick with the old games.

stragomccloud4991d ago (Edited 4991d ago )

The game is not a prequel, although much of the games story is from before she became a bounty hunter.

And in regards to her taking orders. Samus is often employed under the Galactic Federation. In fact Samus was following orders from the guys in the federation in Metroid Prime 3 as well. Furthermore, look at Solid Snake. Cool badass in his own rite. He's not under Colonel Campbell's command anymore, but you better believe out of honor and respect for his former commander, that he'll still do what he asks.

Samus behind the mask, and Samus under the mask are two different people. Like Batman and Bruce Wayne. Under the mask she is a hardcore badass. But behind the mask she IS human. Furthermore, no matter how much time passes, if something very traumatic happens it can take 20 years to get over it. Some people never do. Just talk to some war vets.

Anyway, if some of the cut scenes bother you so much, maybe you can skip them? I don't know if that's possible. Unskippable cutscenes are a gaming sin, by the way.

hatchimatchi4991d ago

I hear what you're saying and I agree with you in your points, but what I've seen just doesn't sit right. I don't view Samus as this ultra badass with no emotions or personality but at the same time I never viewed her as the person that I've seen in the footage so far.

I've been playing Metroid games as long as I can remember and I think I knew the justin bailey code before I knew the Contra code. Does it make me ignorant for not wanting to play Other M? Possibly, but I feel like it might be one those things like, "what has been seen cannot be unseen" and I don't want a sour image of Samus floating in the back of my mind when I play Super Metroid or the Prime trilogy. It comes down to personal preference for me, the game looks fun but I just don't wanna take that risk.

Plus & to be honest, I'll probably end up buying the game. lol

stragomccloud4991d ago (Edited 4991d ago )

That's fair enough. Finally some decent fair conversation on N4G.
I see what you mean now. It's true enough.

Crazy glue and some of my clippings samus wld be tier 1.

stragomccloud4991d ago

I wanna see a vote. Agree or disagree.

If everyone you ever knew was killed, would you or would you not be dealing with intense psychological trauma?

Agree= Yes
Disagree= No

By the way, this is a trick question. If you disagree, then you're lying to yourself. No one escapes that kind of trauma and stays a perfectly mentally sound.

Exhibit A:Batman
Exhibit B:The Punisher

I was interested about this game, metroidM, but because of the controls i know i will not like it. I am no big fan enough to pardon the game all its flaws.

Samus HD4991d ago

i thought This game will get at least 9/10 (from all reviews)

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds469d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

deleted469d ago

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman69469d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees3469d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese469d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits468d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff2183469d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee714d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

Terry_B714d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM933d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
