IGN Rock Band 3 Instrument Controllers Preview

IGN: At E3 2010, Harmonix revealed that they would be bringing the music game genre to a whole new level with the addition of Pro Mode, a new gameplay component that would not only allow you to emulate real musicians, but help you on your way to becoming one. The concept brings together software implementation and radical new hardware design, which involves creating new control schemes via wholly new instrument controllers that mimic their real-life counterparts but also produce functional in-game results.

To assist them in creating these controller solutions, MTV Games and Harmonix teamed up with Mad Catz to design and produce the new Wireless Keyboard Controller and Fender Mustang Pro Guitar Controller, as well as implementing a few notable tweaks to the Rock Band Microphone and Wireless Drum Kit. IGN was given an opportunity to take an extended look at the new hardware and how they performed in a real-life gameplay environment

Damn I was not into buying new equipment after the GHWT bandset I bought but seeing this sick guitar that AT LAST looks as my real ones, 6 steel snares, 17 frets and 102 positions to put the fingers on... Hell yes!

Good to see that kids will be more educated towards a real instrument this way also. For the keyboard I'll just want the announced Midi connector that connects my Line 6 KB37 to the 360/RB3. Hawt!

The instruments are looking really nice, but I'm a bit worried about the detachable neck. There were a ton of problems stemming from the detachable neck on those Guitar Hero III controllers, right? I know this is a different company making the instrument, but it's a real point of worry for me, especially considering this has 102 buttons (see: 102 possible malfunctions) versus 5.

Let's hope they perfected the design and the detachable neck doesn't cause so many problems like the Guitar Hero III controllers did.

SilentNegotiator5009d ago

You may as well just learn to play an instrument.

ThisPlaceSucksBye5009d ago

I find this trend very disturbing for some reason.
It's like these guys want to take over *everything*.

SilentNegotiator5009d ago

I mean, when it was just a couple of colorful buttons and nothing else, that at least made enough sense. You couldn't become a guitarist anywhere near as quickly as you could learn to press 5 or so buttons.

Now you may as well just take a slight step up and start playing music on a real guitar.

Redempteur5009d ago

well at least RB3 is the step between the two ..playing to have fun without the chore of learning ..but yu can still learn if you want laterfor many expert isn't enough and harmonix can please both sides with a simple mode like this

KratosGirI5009d ago

Playing on the drums will actually teach you how to play the drums, unlike guitar/bass.

Llama5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

Seriously? You're not realizing that these games are just another way of listening to music.

jerander5009d ago

I'm more interested in the Fender Squire Strat

BiggCMan5009d ago

how do u play regular guitar in the game though? i never knew. theres no colored buttons or a strum bar or anything. so how do u play like in rock band 2?

CaJuaLFeatPuFF5009d ago

Each strings are prolly one color or something
idk lmfao

BiggCMan5009d ago

me niether XD. if anyone knows, feel free to explain, im really curious.

poindat5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

Yeah I was wondering about this too...

There is no way that they can have 102 different on screen prompts. And even if each string is represented by one color, there still has to be a way to differentiate between the different frets.

That would be a ridiculous amount of memorization, like learning to play the real instrument twice over (once for the guitar itself and once for learning the on screen prompts). :0

Redempteur5009d ago

they said that they have prepared extensives tutorials for pro mode .. ( on each instrument )

Looking Back to 2010 and Rock Band 3 - the First Death of Rock Band

Dave writes: "Hopefully time will be kind to Rock Band 3. It’s the equivalent of a Blade Runner or Van Gogh, unappreciated and undersold in its own time, but something that has undeniable quality. We may never see another Rock Band, no encore to this great series, but in Rock Band 3 and Rock Band 4, we got some pretty awesome final tracks."

"It sounds simple enough, but due to the expiration of licenses, one of the four songs, Promised Land by Vesuvius, is no longer available to download. If you previously had it downloaded, it will *not* be taken away, so you'll still be able to grab this one."

Well damn it. I really dig that song from The Rocker and I did not know it was in RB3. I stopped playing after RB2.

franwex1994d ago

Online achievement/trophies are dumb. I’m not sure why they still include them. I recall the modern warfare games were applauded for not including them.
Unless the game is an online only game because what choice is there at that point.

Skankinruby1994d ago

Uhm trophies are fantastic, they give you real reason to keep playing a game after you beat it

Christopher1994d ago

If you need trophies to keep playing a game after you beat it, then is the game worth playing any further? It's imaginary points, not better gaming. Good games will be replayed regardless of imaginary points.

Skankinruby1994d ago

@Christopher
That logic makes zero sense. It's most definitely 'worth playing further' as you go and do things you clearly didn't do the first time....hence why do didn't get the TROPHY. It's not about better/worse gaming, it's about a replay of a game feeling fresh and not redundant.

"Online achievement/trophies are dumb"

Christopher1994d ago

***It's most definitely 'worth playing further' as you go and do things you clearly didn't do the first time....hence why do didn't get the TROPHY.***

If you need a trophy to do something and not the fact that you enjoy it, is the game actually worth playing? Seriously, how is that a foreign concept? How is that nonsensical? I guess it's nonsense to someone who plays for trophies, but that's about all you're playing for when you promote the reason for doing more to just get trophies and not because you enjoy it.

mkis0071994d ago

Chris

In fairness sony did have that gold trophy auction for all those commercial props.

Would have loved to have enough trophies for that.

Pretty ignorant statement to have... there are lots of fun achievements/trophies to be had playing online... I've never played through the single-player campaign in any COD... but had lots of fun playing online... Companies have to be sure to cater to all gamers when it comes to achievements/trophies... a good mix is never a bad thing...

franwex1993d ago

...except if you want to play a game online a couple of years later and not being able to, hence from getting all the trophies.
I’m not obsessed with getting every achievement/trophy but if I like the game I may try to. I’m simply being punished for not discovering the game earlier.

agnosticgamer1993d ago

Most games... minus complete failures last much...much longer online than I believe you are giving credit for...

OneEyedSteve1994d ago (Edited 1994d ago )

Half of these are false .. The Evolve one can still unlocked... Ghostbusters is only unachievable on PS3 its still online on 360.. Destiny 2 one is only unobtainable for a while as said by bungie... GTAV one can still be unlocked too in a private game. And the Black Ops 3 one can still be unlocked using a few different methods. Guy who wrote this is clueless.

Majors1994d ago

When a games server goes offline then they should allow users to create their own p2p servers to keep these games active. They should also unlock or delete the trophies from any list to those who havent got them.

darthv721994d ago

I can think of a few honorable mentions. there is one for smartglass seeing as smartglass is now defunct. there is also ones for 1v100 and dorito crash course 2 since both of those games are also defunct.
