IGN: Metroid Other M Review

Metroid: Other M is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that’s been reluctant to push story over gameplay. It’s certainly possible that what the Other M team did for Metroid could potentially shape the direction of other Nintendo franchises, but for now this is a great first step.
Many of the issues in Metroid: Other M could have been addressed with the inclusion of nunchuck control, so I’m not entirely sold on the idea that single Wii remote control was the best thing for this game. But in the end, this is still an excellent experience with great, intense action and an engaging story that turns one of Nintendo’s beloved characters into something more than a kick-ass bounty hunter.

I bet it would have got higher if IGN hadn't changed their score scale.

deadreckoning6664998d ago (Edited 4998d ago )

Ummm..why would it matter if it got a higher score or not? 8.5 is a fantastic score....a score that ONE man assigned to the game out of the tens of millions of Wii owners in the world.

@Montrealien- Exactly. I don't understand why some gamers are so in love with scores assigned by random people they don't know. I've been looking forward to this game and I've been planning to get a Wii this year for this and Goldeneye. Just waiting for another price drop. The black Wii looks so sexy :)

"After SMG2 i was expecting metroid to at least 9.5, this is surprising!"

I don't understand. How can you expect a certain score for a game you haven't even played it yet????

colonel1794998d ago

I think is due to the change in their score system. They won't give 9 and 10 so easily anymore.

Anyways, 8.5 is a great score.

thereapersson4997d ago

Until the check from advertisers clears, that is...

mikeslemonade4997d ago

8.5 is an average score because every other game these days gets a 9.0 average. Whatever, I will just play the whatever clone that comes out for PS move. I ain't playing a sub-hd game.

disappointed it got a good score?

kids these days...too spoiled!

AWBrawler4998d ago

Funny since you never played it

specialguest4998d ago

Back in the 90's, a score of 8.5 was a great score. Anyone who were into that game genre would gladly buy the game.

thereapersson4997d ago (Edited 4997d ago )

I was going to say that exact same thing. I remember back when I used to read OPM in the late nineties / early 00's, any game that got 4/5 was worth buying, and even some games that got 3/5 were worth a weekend rental. Nowadays, people won't even bother playing some games if they're not 90 percent or above, which is petty and ridiculously childish.

People need to back off riding the nuts of the rating system to validate their habit, and just play what their instincts tell them might be fun -- even if a particular reviewer says otherwise.

TheGameFoxJTV4997d ago

Most gamers are stupid. You can't argue with that fact. Just look at all the fanboys, and people who base a purchase entirely on a review.

GiggMan4998d ago

I hope that doesn't mean you're not going to pick it up...

darkcharizard4998d ago (Edited 4998d ago )

No it doesn't :)

Montralien, I didn't know that IGN had changed its scoring system. And just STFU! stop acting like an 80 yr old grandpa who served in WW2 !

Montrealien4998d ago

Get your facts straight, is was the Ikari Wars conflict, not WW2. And I am 31.

darkcharizard4998d ago

Well I'm happy for you!

Now just leave me alone! The G4 review has left me devastated :((

*sob*

yoonakron4997d ago

Hey Montrealien, I'm an Ikari Wars vet, too! Did you serve with Colonel Ralf?!?!

Kos-Mos4997d ago

@ darkcharizard
Did you read g4`s review? It`s horrible. One of the big problems with the game is that Samus got big daddy issues. And that Samus is not tough enough. She was tough in Prime games etc. but not when she was young. How is that possible?
What kind of a "professional" reviewer would write something like that as a main issue?

G4 have never been a trusted source. They apparently don`t like or understand games produced outside us.

Ops, I realized now that the reviewer was a girl. Haha. No wonder.

Spider0504998d ago

wtf?

Metroid: Other M has better grahpic than Mafia 2?

WTF?

Marquis_de_Sade4997d ago

Graphics are scored relative to the system the game is on I think.

tunaks14997d ago

you forgot about something called art.

Kos-Mos4997d ago

I`m sorry, but you need to learn the basics before you create an account and write on a gaming-site.

ABizzel14998d ago

People are so stupid an 8/10 is a good score. Not every game needs to be rated 9/10 or 10/10 and many of the games that get those scores don't deserve them.

TROLL EATER4998d ago

nice score, good game to play while i wait for halo reach

PAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

*cough*

lolzers4998d ago

YEAH,I RENT GAME,NOT GET 10/10,NOT WORTH MONEY

/Heavysarcasmmode+3

handheldwars4998d ago

So you bought Mario Galaxy 2?

lolzers4997d ago

I buy all my games. I've never rented a game in my life. My father did when we had an Atari back in 1984, but I've never rented a game personally. I was just joking.

NewNameNow4997d ago

8.5 is good but there's never been a Metroid game that hasn't deserved a 10. Not that IGN isn't the biggest piece of shit site on the net, but seriously do they think they're awesome for not giving it a 10?

saimcheeda4998d ago

After SMG2 i was expecting metroid to at least 9.5, this is surprising!

Ether4998d ago

Jeez, 8.5 is a good score.

Say it with me, ggghhhhuuuuuu...ddhhh.

Neo Nugget4998d ago

Guhhh....guh...GUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHDUHHHH.

"Good" enough.....xD

ChickeyCantor4998d ago

For some reason i imagined Stewie from Family guy saying that.

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds473d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

deleted473d ago

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman69473d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees3474d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese473d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits473d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff2183473d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee719d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

Terry_B719d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM937d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
