GameSpot: NBA 2K11 Hands-On - His Airness Returns

GameSpot writes: "Michael Jordan. Sadly, that name might not mean much to younger fans of the NBA, particularly in an era where the most talented stars hold hour-long TV specials to announce which team is going to pay them more than the last. Still, Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest to play the sport of basketball, and his appearance on NBA 2K11's cover--according to developer Visual Concepts--is not only a celebration of that, but also an opportunity to expose the current generation of Kobe and LeBron fans to a man who took the NBA to a whole new level. To be clear, Jordan is more than NBA 2K11's cover athlete. In fact, there are a couple of modes in the game that specifically focus on number 23 and his career".

Can't wait for this game. I hate to purchase yearly sports games but with Jordan WITH NBA 2k, that's the only exception I'll take.

That and if NFL 2K series ever come back

I feel the same way. Also, they nailed how the players move/play. Just watch Rondo if you don't believe me, moves just like him.

Jordan > All That includes Kobrick Cryant 6-24 FG Game 7 Finals

KING854993d ago

Michael Jordan is certainly the greatest to ever grace the basketball court in many eyes of fans (including mine), as he transcended this game from more than simply a game of basketball, but a lifestyle. However, trying to point out Bryant's horrible game seven in last season's finals does not detract from Bryant's skill or greatness. If you try to look at it as objectively as possible, no one has matched Jordan's will to win and to do whatever it takes other than Bryant. You can just see the intensity when he plays and to me that brings those two men together. I do believe Jordan was the better player, but Kobe is also great in his own right and his five rings show that. Many argue he would not have won them without Shaq, but would Shaq have won them without Kobe or Jordan without Pippen?

iceman064993d ago

Plus, if you dissect Kobe's game you will find a tremendous influence from His Airness. Kobe has developed into the same type of player, maybe not at the same level, as Jordan was in his latter years. The back to the basket turn around jumper that he developed is all Jordan. He definitely has that same killer instinct and the desire to will himself to be successful. The biggest difference is that, in my opinion, Jordan had the ability to make good players great. He wasn't surrounded by a load of talent. (Scottie Pippen was a relative unknown until his time with MJ) The Bulls were the epitome of a role player's team. Not knocking Kobe, just pointing out the greatness of MJ.

Graphics4993d ago

Damn what Kobe did to you that you such a hater? Kobe may have shot 6-24 but he also had 16 rebounds which helped them win and made all his FG in the 4th quarter. Haters need to all die.

spektical4993d ago

its funny with gamers try to explain basketball... Magic Johnson is the best player ever.. thers a reason why Jordan had to switch with Pippin, because he couldnt handle an old Magic.. Magic is the only person who could dominate at every position.

Kobe is a better offensive player than jordan, simply because he has more moves. However, Jordan played better defense, and was a better leader. Kobe can still learn better defense, and his leadership is improving. With that said, I believe Jordan is better than kobe at this time; when its all said and done, i think kobe and jordan will be sharing a throne.

"Kobe is a better offensive player than jordan"

That is quite laughable.

Stats speak for themselves.

Wrong people who label others haters need to die.

mrcash4993d ago

lol they've all had bad games, kobe's 81 was definitely more impressive than any performance jordan had offensively. I think they are about equal thats my opinion.

"Michael Jordan. Sadly, that name might not mean much to younger fans of the NBA" ----- is this really possible? Is it possible for anybody to like the NBA and not know about Michael Jordan? Amazing.

Many of the younger fans know who MJ is, even my 10 year old does. But they never witnessed his greatness first hand. They never saw how much of a game changer he was. To many, he's better known as the Hanes guy than the basketball player. Its just the way the world works.

Crazyglues4993d ago (Edited 4993d ago )

Could not agree more, and I think, that is what makes those moments so epic, because I was right there glued to the TV watching the game live when he was kicking the knicks butt in the finals... when they where up and the bulls had just lost 2 games..

-the time when he had the flu, and was still killing it out there... OMG just amazing

Jordan was just amazing to watch, those games will always be my greatest memories of the NBA -I think those who know and grew up in that time got to see some truly amazing games...

For me, and many Jordan fans - this game is epic - this is a must have for any true fan, just like a pair of the Jordan 12's in red and white... (if you don't' have those, your not a real Jordan fan) You have to at least have some pair jordans.

Come on' you have to have at least owned one pair of Jordan's that your didn't wear.. just collected to be a real fan..

and this game is a must buy, they have really done their homework, they didn't just add him to the game, they brought those games back, with his play style, they aged him as the game goes on...

they made sweet sneaker unlocks as you progress, they allow you to add him to today's teams... - this is an epic Jordan fan dream - you can add jordan to today's Lakers or the Heat -how cool is that...

Really well thought out and done just right... not to mention the game is looking epic, movement is some of the best I've ever seen in a basketball game.. so fluid and smooth, and just really, really nicely done.. -Can't wait for this one.

This is the one you buy, this game is going to be worth the money..

Fury vs Stress Relief: How Video Games Rile Me Up But Keep Me Sane

“Violent video games cause children to be violent.” It’s a headline every gamer rolls their eyes at, and one we’re very sick of hearing. It seems every time a game with a mature rating comes out, there’s someone leading the charge against it because of it’s supposed to have an effect on developing minds. First and foremost, if a game has a mature rating, than anyone playing the game who is not 17 most likely got it through their parents. So blame them, not the game. Pictures from the recent Halo 4 release show a great deal of middle school students showing off their battle pose with an assault rifle. Take a guess who drove them there. But the point of this article isn’t to bash parents who buy games for their kids, nor is this about the rating system. It’s about an interesting anomaly regarding how people react to the games they play. I don’t know how many others see it this way, but games involving no violence end up being the most aggravating, while games that are all about mindless violence are an excellent medium for stress relief. From HalfBeard's HUD.

Rob Hornecker4179d ago (Edited 4179d ago )

Interesting story,But if the author gets worked up over a
NBA or driving game I could only wonder what he would be like if he was playing a CoD or a battlefield game!?!

If there is one thing that I have learned in my 30 plus years of gaming is :" Video games don't kill people,People play video games to keep from killing people"!!!

I have not found a better,Leagle form of stress relief than video games! As far as what games kids play, that should be up to the parents and the parents shouldn't use video games as a baby sitter.

An S&S Perspective: Is Buying a Sports Game Annually Smart?

Sports games have gotten pretty good lately, but there was a time when every year you had games that only made minor improvements, but we still went out and dropped the 65$ on it. Am I at fault for dropping the cash and letting the developers get away with a glorified roster update, or is it OK because I'm a hardcore NBA and NFL fan?

Short answer:no

Long answer: If they add enough to the game where its not identical to last years iteration and adds must have features to the games that make it more in depth (I.e. NBA 2K13, MLB 12 The Show, NHL 13) then absolutely. If its almost rinse and repeat and has a barrage of new features that almost get overshadowed by what was taken out from previous iterations then no.

spektical4236d ago

in most cases no.

However there are games that provide tons of new content yearly (besides team updates , obviously). Mlb the show, nhl and to a lesser extent nba2k13 are prime examples

TheShow174236d ago

I agree with you guys. NHL and The Show switch it up every year, which is solid. Madden goes back and forth between offense and defense orientation.

The problem is that it's difficult to change the video game when the actual game remains stagnant. Football is football, what can EA change in the gameplay? The thing that really annoys me, is the same bad commentary year after year. COD gets a lot of crap for being the same game YoY, but at least it's an upgrade and different levels. I buy Madden every year, and literally the commentary hasn't changed in three years!

ninjabake4236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

Madden is a whole nother beast. They simply don't capture the essence of the NFL the way their very own studio captures college ball in NCAA Football. Madden added some nice things this year but to me its overshadowed by what they took out of franchise mode, still no halftime show and still no post game show. Overall Madden just doesn't create that illusion or immersion the way NHL, The Show or NBA 2K does.

When you play those other games sometimes you can mistake it for a real life broadcast and others unfamiliar with gaming watching you play could easily make that mistake of thinking its real at first glance as well.

With Madden they just refuse to fully commit to replicating a broadcast and that'd be OK if we had an alternate NFL, or heck any football, game. But we don't and Madden 13 still is not up to par with NFL 2K5, an 8 year old LAST gen game smh.

Edit: when it comes to the commentary they have improved it this year but as always the play-by-play Guy (Jim nantz) gets repetitive and dull especially after a few years into connected career mode and he's still rambling on about the 2012 season storylines. I think the issue with the commentary is it isn't dynamic and is shortsighted and the script is a little stale as you'll still here Nantz spout similar lines as past commentators.

Finding a way to add dynamic commentary in sports games could be huge next gen.
