We already live in a "finger pointing" society where everyone likes to blame everyone but themselves for their problems.

Dr. Phil has based his entire career on feeding off this finger pointing and exploiting it.

In turn, making uneducated opinions that he "forces" on his audience to believe that he is right. It's a total mind game and these middle aged to older women eat right out the palm of his hand.

Or even better, let's find a really dysfuctional family with an alcoholic father. Put him on national T.V., make him cry in front of the nation and say how sorry he is. Then, put him in a rehab center for a few weeks (because we really don't want to help him too much).

Perhaps Dr. "Yeew Neeed Tah Luv Yer Wahhife" Phil should crack open some world history books for a change...violence has been "part of the fiber of our society" looong before the existence of video games, movies, or even underwear, for that matter.

Funny how no one ever considers the remote possibility that violent video games may actually be therapeutic (for the mentally-mature) for a change; how it could provide a safe, alternate method of venting pent-up anger - as opposed to really blowing someone's head off.

Imagine that.

Maybe he should do a special explaining how even an asinine, one-dimensional television host can get achieve wild TV ratings by needlessly ruffling the feathers of over-protective soccer moms, and using video games as a scapegoat for the rest of our world's problems - and making lots and lots of money while at it.

Dr. Phil's show is a circus one step down from Jerry Springer. The stuff he pulls would cost him his license if done in a private practice setting - specifically the way he rudely confronts guests. Yes, confrontation is necessary, but you must be respectful. And he very rarely gets to the core of an issue - he is more of a "life coach" than a therapist - at least on his show. I can't comment on his therapeutic approach before Oprah took him under her wing.

As far as the violence thing goes, you all make the valid points about parents responsibility. What boggles my mind is this belief that video games MAKE us violent.

What video games were the Romans playing that led to the gladiator fights to the death and sending people to the lions in front of a crowd? What games were they playing during the Spanish Inquistition? What games were they playing when they invented cruxifiction and the guillotine? What games did Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini play? Were the Ruwandan's playing games that led to the massacre of millions by machete? And what game was Cain playing when he murdered Abel? Perhaps Adam and Eve should have checked the ESRB rating...

Please. As a kid, my dad ran around with a toy gun and played cops and robbers, and my grandfather with a stick before that. Our attraction to/fascination with violence is part of humanity. That doesn't mean we need to commit acts of violence. But what is better - fragging aliens, Nazis and zombies on a videogame or watching real life gladiators kill each other?

Violent Video games DO program kids and kids have NO buisiness playing violent video games, but I will be DAMNED if you can censor MY ability to play whatever I choose. If not for SLACK companies selling violent video games to kids and other issues like JACKASS parents who allow their kids to play any game "oh, it's JUST a game" we would all be playing Manhunt 2 right now...all of us that were OLD enough to do so that is.

Your comment reminded me of a study I read that showed that playing games REDUCED stress and aggressive feelings - rather than increase them. It can be an outlet for frustration and tension, similar to exercise.

The problem is that emotionally sick people get a hold of a game and it plays into their behavior. I remember in the 80s when I started playing D&D - and all the claims that it was demonic and influencing kids. The thing was - what these crazy people were doing was not to be found in the actual game.

People often assume a causal relationship where there is only a correlational one. If a serial killer plays games - they blame the games, but do not account for the millions and millions who play the exact same game and have never committed a violent act against society.

I hate Dr. Phil's evaluations, especially since the moron got his own show after having his nose up Oprah's ass for years. The man tends to steal the focus in every given situation, in lieu of his own alleged magnificence. I mean, the man is nothing but a PhD Marriage Counsilor, but somehow he tends to know EVERYTHING about drug-abusers, sex-offenders, mass-murdering sociopaths and now videogames. This is the generations fighting all over again. In the 40's it was swing and jazz, in the 60's and 70's it was Rock n' Roll and pot. Today it's videogames... the young ones move on, and the old folks are trying to preserve society the way it was at their time. Pathetic if you ask me.
