Treyarch confirms modding for Black Ops

VG247 writes: While PC modders were completely locked out of Modern Warfare 2, Treyarch’s confirmed modding tools will be available for Black Ops, no doubt to the delight of many.

good, this is how it should be, i wish we could do this on console like in UT3, well you do need to the PC to make the mods, but at least you can downlaod from the community, mods went crazy in that game

I don't know if this is possible. But I would like it if you could create levels on the PC and post them to a server and download them to your PS3/360. Is that possible? I wonder if programs like Steamworks or something makes that possible. Anyone know how that work?

Each case is different, but if it were something the devs wanted to do, it's totally possible. It probably requires some engine works, something to make anything created on PC compatible with the consoles, but Epic did it for Unreal Tournament, you could download mods straight from the PS3 browsers or by PC on a USB stick.

You sort of hit upon something I'm interested in, and thats the steamworks, I hope Valve allow PC mods (at least some) to work with the consoles (PS3 at least) and frankly I dont understand why it hasnt been raised in any interviews yet. It would be my first question.

Dont expect it from COD though, mod support basically means they cant charge for future DLC, thats not something I even see them considering.

yeah unreal tournament did it, only i havn't played in a while last i remember you just transfer it to your usb from the computer start UT3 on PS3 and can install it ingame

You hit every nail on the head. They could definitely make it so mods would work on the PS3, but they likely won't given the generally accepted console DLC model. If they did, though, they'd generate a sh*t-ton of good will from the gaming community.

This is great news for the PC though. Stuff like this is important if PC gaming is to survive in its current state.

Exactly, it would make the gamers extremely happy. Hell id go pre order it right now if they followed the UT3 model of mods. However we have to wake up and realize its Activision, therefore it wont happen. They rather milk our wallets with 15 dollar maps (some which will most likely already be made) instead of just making us happy.

I just wonder if modding will include zombie levels? Cus thatd be pretty fun to make.

No Activision is garbage, COD is actually a good series run, and has stood the test of time. Yeah, MW2 has left a sour taste in somes' mouths with all it's issues, but Black Ops looks really good in the gameplay department. And Treyarch deserves this, for taking so much sh*t from people. It just pisses me off Bobby Kotick will make a profit from this game.

they should bring mods to ps3, epic did it with unreal tournament 3, valve will do it with upcoming games on ps3 and other devs should seriously consider this..

people will buy the ps3 version just to create and test mods.. and people like me that love mods will invest in the ps3 version on top of the pc version..

as is i'll probably go with the pc version.. add mods to the ps3 version and i'll get both..

I would also love to see 360/PS3 cross-platform online play. There's no technical reason why it cannot be done...but there are plenty of business reasons, I suppose.
