SNK fans rejoice. The much-anticipated SNK shooter starring KOF favorites like Kyo Kusanagi and Terry Bogard is headed to the Xbox 360 this fall. The achievements for KOF Sky Stage were recently announced, indicating the game is coming close to release.
Console Monster: "When you think of the King of Fighters games you would probably imagine two overly powerful people competing against each other in an arena with punches, kicks and specials but SNK’s King of Fighters Sky Stage sees six characters from their popular fighting game fly through the skies in this vertical shooting game, battling robots and saving the world, of course."
MMGN: "The King of Fighters was originally a Japanese fighting game originally made for the Neo-Geo, but ported to many other consoles such as Game Boy, Playstation, Dreamcast and even the Nokia N-Gage. Sky Stage is, bizarrely, a vertical arcade shooter featuring King of Fighters characters, who now hold the ability of flight for some reason. Each stage, which takes place over busy cities and towns, plays the same; battle waves of robots, and fight a tough boss at the end."
What the? They totally changed King of fighters, the original one was a fighting game.
DHGF: You would think that putting popular franchise characters into a goofy, inexpensive shooter as a cute nod to fans of the genre and your games would be, or would have been at least, a common thing, but such is not the case. To be honest, the only game I can think of off the top of my head to do this thing is Gunbird 2 with its appearance of Morrigan from Darkstalkers, and while I’m certain there are others, it’s hardly a common thing. This is a shame, as you would think that characters from games like Castlevania, Dead or Alive, Street Fighter and the various Megaten games, among many, many others, would make neat main characters in shooters, but such things never seem to come to pass. Leave it to SNK to commission such a game like KOF Sky Stage, a game based around the King of Fighters universe where you shoot at other fighters and various spacecrafts while unleashing special moves and other such sillyness.
