It does get warm yes but not to the point where it burns your had. Here's a tip after you finish playing leave the PS3 on for an hour or so, so it can cool off. make sure you have the PS3 on a hard surface where air can circulate well and not on something like carpet.

if it's getting to the point where it burns your hand then you need to move it from that location.

@Bellow: The PS3 dissipates the heat more efficiently and has in internal power source so that makes sense. Both produce a lot of heat, question is which gets rid of it the fastest and how well the solders handle heat.

At my gamestop a guy brought in his ps3 because it was sitting on part of his hdmi cord and burnt a hole in the cord. Its true as I seen the machine and the cord. The ps3 slim gets very hot so please don't downplay that either. Both machines get hot but several tests have shown the ps3 to run hotter but it does include the power supply so it should. I pointed this out over a month ago when they were releasing those comparison charts of 360 vs. 360s.

The new unit gets hotter at the surface because it has better heat dissipation. My 360 pro from 2007 feels like it doesn't get very hot, but only on the outside. The inner components of the console are probably much hotter, and it may crap out before my warranty ends in mid-November.

How hot it runs unless you plan on cooking on the damn thing. The only concern should be how well it performs and its components withstand the heat. My PS3 Slim runs hotter than my phatty. Do I give shit? No. I just want to play games instead of checking temps.

Now for the good stuff, "IF" any of you genius-chefs do indeed plan on doing some grilling on your consoles, I'd recommend using the Wii. The Wiii has the lowest temp which is gerat for BBQing. We all know the best Q is cooked low and slow.

I wouldn`t know, as I don`t have a slim. I can say however that the original 360s got very, very, very hot, especially back by the fan. It`s been said before, and I know it`s extremely fanboyish, and everybody is going to cry and stomp their feet when I say this, but, the 360 doubles as a space heater, seriously. It made my room very comfortable on cold nights.

Your PS3 gets much hotter because of the internal power supply. I'm guessing the power supply in the PS3 is in the rear, because that's where it's hotter. I'm not too sure about the CPU and GPU temps though...
