Review Round-up: GrimGrimoire

The current release schedule (across all platforms) is so utterly barren, that GamerSquad thought it wise to take a step back from all its weekly "there's nothing worth playing" rants in order to double check on possible gaming gems that may have slipped beneath the quality radar.

While the likes of Harry Potter, The Transformers, and Shrek have all recently twisted consumer eyes away from videogames without the (undeserved?) public boost granted by a Hollywood license, the likes of GrimGrimoire have indeed gone relatively unnoticed. Hopefully this particular Review Round-up can change all that.

Let's see what the gathered critical masses thought of this magical PlayStation 2 adventure.

History of Real-Time Strategy: The Downfall (2004 - 2010)

VGChatz's Taneli Palola: "There's no question that during these years the overall popularity of the genre took a significant hit, as most games within it specialized even further by adding new elements from other types of games into their gameplay loops and consequently became increasingly niche as the years wore on.

However, this doesn't in any way mean that the period was devoid of great games. Quite the contrary, in fact. Arguably some of the greatest RTS titles ever made came out around this time, and much of this was because many developers were increasingly familiar and comfortable with adding new twists and gameplay elements to the familiar formula. As such, even when the genre's popularity dwindled, many studios were still creating excellent and groundbreaking titles almost every year, just for a smaller audience than in years past."

those were fun years red alert star craft command and conquer well when westwood studio made good games before EA brought them like bioware...

Vegamyster1815d ago

Aside from C&C 4, the other C&C's from EA were all good/great. The genre nose dived once Moba's rose in popularity, even Petroglyph Games (ex-Westwood employees) haven't had a hit since Star Wars: Empire at War (2006), all there games got abandoned after launch.

What do you need to know about Vanillaware?

2D games are great, right? If there is one Japanese developer that has embraced the idea of them and ran with it, it is Vanillaware. The company is committed to the idea of games that are incredibly artistic and totally flat. Just recently, Dragon's Crown came back into the spotlight with a PlayStation 4 release. But what do you need to know about this developer? Let’s go over some of the more important details.

It takes a ton of work to produce 2D graphics lavish enough to strain a contemporary game system. This is in fact George Kamitani's modus operandi, exemplified by both Dragon's Crown and its artbook. If the preface in the artbook is anything to go by, Dragon's Crown is George Kamitani's love letter to gaming as a whole.

And my issue with bringing back such games is that they'll forego their basic mechanics. Turn based RPGs made into real time action games or faux MMOs.

Suikoden III is a classic! I played through and unlocked all 120 or so characters. I've been meaning to play IV and V all these years later...

So happy to see Wild Arms 3 mentioned. It's one of my favorite JRPGs.

Hajime no ippo: victorious road

Chevalier2591d ago

Ippo is such an amazing game. Amazing manga and anime as well! Makes me want to play both Ippo games again. The PS2 ones were so amazing. The Wii version was so awful in comparison.

Nintenzo2591d ago

Yeah the wii game was hot garbage. There was 2 hajime no ippo games for the PS2 but there was a 3rd only released in Japan. VICTORIOUS ROAD. This version lets you create a boxer from scratch then delve into an extensive career mode where you can move weights, set your diet, choose your training and even develop special moves you see in the regular roster and much more. Such a gem of a game and probably the greatest boxing game ever

I also loved Black, Wipeout 3, and Killzone. I thought these were all underappreciated as well.

Abnor_Mal2591d ago

Many poeple seem not to like the very frist Killzone for some reason, okay granted it didn't look all that great but i was a great game nonetheless. I'm going to replay it soon and play through Hakka, Rico and the shadow marshall (forgot her name at the moment) parts on ps3. Black was a game that got the guns and sounds right, was light on the distruction but was a great shooter. Would love a remake of this game just as it was back in the PS2 days its another game that I played so many times. I remember when ending Black for the first time after the hectic shootout my hands were shaking a bit I was so ampped. Good times, good times.

Fist4achin2590d ago

Yes, that last scene in black was intense. It took me a few tries and when you finally did get it, it was like, what happened, did I really finish it, whew...

Definitely some good times. Good to hear from others who enjoy some good occasional nostalgia!
