Halo: Reach Handles 60 AI On Screen Simultaneously

If 40+ AI at once wasn't impressive enough for you then Bungie will make damn sure to change that. In the first Vidoc that Bungie released ( Once More Unto the Breach ), they said that Reach could handle over 40 plus AI in a one scene battle and is about to change that statement again.

I'll believe it when I'm in the heat of the battle.

But honestly I'm not going to be counting so it really doesn't matter to me how many AI they have running around on screen.

Konami's Ninety-Nine Nights 2

1 Miwwiion troops wow wow!
1 Miwwion twoops wow wow!
This angst extweme!
You will be sucked!

The engine has enough power to display hundweds of twoops on the screen at the same time.

Pff don't even mention Killzone 2

A corridor shooter with half or less the amount of AI found in reach and absolutely no usable vehicles or ships.

Reach has open worlds again like Halo 1, 60 (smart) AI at once and usable earth & flying vehicles.
(Warthogs, Forklift, banshees, ghosts, mongoose, pelicans, wraith, Revenant, Falcon)

No point in arguing

SOAD5051d ago

Well, now you're just comparing 2 games you haven't played.

PirateThom5050d ago

"no usable vehicles or ships."

I guess that mech I was firing about in doesn't count, or the tank.

Cevapi885050d ago

or when you were on one of the other mother ships destroying the incoming helghast ships....yeah definitely a corridor shooter /s

ThaGeNeCySt5050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

no useable vehicles? Isn't there a tank to drive and shoot rockets/cannons out of in the beginning of the game as well as some kind of mech machine to control and ride towards the end?

fooltheman5050d ago

hmm killzone had once of the best AI I ever seen...
and alot of people also think that... ^^

here they go again like kids

"My dad is better than yours"

"it only matters when Halo does it, apparently"

Its not about that kids

He is reacting like that because in the past a lot of "gamers" here have been trowing the excuse that some stuff like this one can only be done on ps3 and now those excuses are are just fading away so he reacted like that. But you guys just wanna keep judging and bring more excuses for no reason.

Can PS3 handle 60 AI in a game? YUP

Can 360 handle 60 AI in a game? YUP

RockmanII75050d ago

Just ignore them, it makes your life easier

SonyPS3605050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

Have we seen the Ps3 handle 60 AI in game? NOPE

DigitalAnalog5050d ago

I can say that the team of Bungie worked EXTRA hard to get this done. Do we really need the PS3 to come in and showcase 100+ AI on screen to end this argument just to satisfy your imaginary ego? I think a lot of gamers put more emphasis with console's power they neglect that the true potential is REALLY in the hands of the talented devs themselves.

When they say "A.I" they mean actual A.I, not multiple copies of the same enemy that stand there and let you hit them.

Sorry.

BannedForNineYears5050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

Mag much?
255 enemies on screen is possible. ^_^

crzyjackbauer5050d ago

yeah but nobody gives a rat's ass about MAG
or resistance 1 or 2 for that matter

mrcash5050d ago

I never saw that many enemies on screen at once in mag, everything was divided into sections. The most I saw was around 32.

NnT32915050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

In MAG you control your characters, its not Artificial Intelligence like Reach

nycredude5048d ago

Then you never played Domination dude. You can and do have that many people on Mag at the same time.

lol I really don't know y people are fighting, first... we haven't seen the game do this and if it doesn't a lot of people are gonna be reminded of this day for ever in n4g and vice versa if it does it. Any game can run 1000 AI's if the developer wants, obviously the quality of the AI is going to be way lower for it to work and not blow up the console or pc. Lets just wait for the game and see for our self's.

As for N4PS3G, he should be the last one talking, been caught lying many times and as everyone knows *blind fanboy*

Ai processing depends on the processor, 360s processer is great powerpc 3 cores but cell just does it much better.

lugia 40005051d ago

Bungie employees word:
Here's a little bit of behind the scenes in Game Dev for you: This is an illusion.

The majority of those enemies are animated bitmaps representative of actual enemies to fight. They are 2d, and have no AI. As you killed enemies in that fight, new enemies came in from the sides of the screen and the placeholder enemy representations were culled to make it feel as though you were actually cutting your way through a massive crowd of heartless.

The reality is that there was only 10 or so AI on the screen at a time.

This trick was made a big deal of when people started talking about it, but the only company I saw really execute on it was Square with this particular scene. And they really did nail it. The bitmaps are only obvious on the rare occasion that one ends up in the foreground, between Sora and the player camera.

The More You Know(tm)

http://www.bungie.net/Forum...

Ashriel5050d ago

that bungie guy was talking about Kingdom Hearts 2 :D

SOAD5051d ago (Edited 5051d ago )

That's true, but Heavenly Sword's enemy clusters were AI clones. Look carefully next time you play the game. Various groups, interspersed at different points on the map, just stand around and once in a while perform the same movement animation. It's not hard to do that. It's like duplicating an image across the screen.

I'm not saying Halo Reach's AI will be any better than that, though.

Desecron5051d ago

Ninety Nine Nights, Dead Rising, even Kameo (a 360 launch game) had hundreds of enemy AIs on screen at once. Of course, their AIs were incredibly simple... Halo has some of best AI in the FPS genre, so 60 of those is quite impressive.

dizzleK5051d ago (Edited 5051d ago )

the difference is that 990 of that 1000 was simply animated, a.i.-less background animation.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

same with resistance 2, they were just dumb drones that ran at you.

edit-damn, beaten to it.

watchman5051d ago

ok if you want to bring it like that Kameo had 5000 ennemies on screen at the same time.(2005 game)

rest my case

Christopher5051d ago (Edited 5051d ago )

Just a bit of reality, technically that's not 1000+ AI at once.

The further the enemy groups are away, they work as a single AI set.

So, let's say the enemies are 600 yards away. The 1,000 at 600 yards represent 10 AI in groups of 100. As the individual groups of 100 slowly approach, at 500 yards they break into 10 more AI groups of 10 each. 300 yards, they break down into 2 groups of 5 each. And so on and so on until at 100 yards or so they break up into individual AI per enemy.

So, while there may be 1,000 different enemies on the screen, AI wise there's likely only a max of 60 or so controlled elements at once since the enemies don't continually approach, only when you have killed a certain number of AI within your close range.

Halo can do this exact same thing and make it look like you're taking on thousands at once when you never are.

palaeomerus5050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

" Heavenly sword had 1000+ enemies on screen
with catapults.

Ai processing depends on the processor, 360s processer is great powerpc 3 cores but cell just does it much better."

Uh huh. Next you can marvel at all the zombies in Dead Rising, Freak Peds in Crackdown 2, Orcs in Kameo, and MISS THE POINT COMPLETELY while 'defending your console' (that isn't really even under attack in this article).

Or maybe you can make some absurd irrelevant chirping noises about all the AI guiding the sprites in R-Type or some Bullet Hell type Shmup. LOL.

hmmm i wonder why? you're just mad because halo isn't on YOUR console of choice, and the fact that it has a hell of a lot more popularity/ liking from gamers in the community than any damn killzone will ever have.

wishy washy, hypocritical sony troll. <---that last statement, is ENOUGH SAID

dragon825050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

Since I have all three consoles I really don't give a rats ass what system it's on. The fact of the matter is in my opinion Halo sucks no matter what system its on. Because of this I will not be buying it. I am sick of you people calling everyone who doesn't like the almighty HALO a Sonly Fanboy. Since when does populartity make something the be all end all?? All I have to say about that is "Justin Bieber". I think you get my point.

Takoulya5050d ago

I was replying to big_silky, get over it. I did not bash or talk trash about Halo: Reach at all. In fact, I think it's going to be a great game. If you would stop whining for a second and get rid of your fanboy mentality, perhaps you could support an intelligent argument. In this case, I will reply any further as I refuse to argue with someone with the IQ of 30.

What does GT5 have to do with Halo Reach's 60 AI on screen?

BrianG5050d ago (Edited 5050d ago )

Nothing at all lol, someone just threw it out there to start another war. But seriously, how many people are buying halo because it is a good game? Agree to this. Cause I actually liked the first and third one, and I have a PS3, so none of those responses needed. But I almost get the feeling that some people just buy halo cause is halo, and thats it. Just like people are gonna buy GT5 just cause is GT.

Sounds like the battles are going to be epic.

8thnightvolley5051d ago

oh yes... 4 player coop all that enemies on screen..

EPIC

Traveler5051d ago

Yes, it sounds like it. I have always loved the AI in Halo games and I don't think this one will be any exception.

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion520d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad520d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90520d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183520d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90520d ago (Edited 520d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde520d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90520d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde520d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator520d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13520d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183520d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.

Awesome news - so can we look forward to playing Halo: Infinite with no online issues circa 2033?

just_looken605d ago

"You can download the improved Reach AI mod at Mod DB" This was a mod 343 did nothing so the online will be fixed in our dreams.

SullysCigar605d ago

Par for the course with 343.

Profchaos604d ago

They did say they had a 10 year plan for infinite we just all assumed it would be DLC could of been a 10 year netcode rollout.

But seriously this is a mod the community won't be able to modify infinite in the same way

Cikatriz_ESP605d ago

Combat Evolved was the best campaign, and it's not even close.

just_looken605d ago

You should have tried this version of reach when it first came out remastered for a year there was no sound because 343 could not locate the sound files.

It was a special challenge.

badz149605d ago

more like the bunch at 343i are simply mentally challenged

ACEMANWISE605d ago

Well I guess 12 years is faster than most fixes. I guess this is a cheap way to "remaster" something nowadays.....by just fixing something that used to always be broken.

zidane1341605d ago

Did you even read the article? This is a mod to improve AI from back almost 2 gens ago. Nobody is claiming this is remastering anything. Yeesh.

Crows90605d ago

Halo is dead. Microsoft has other shooter franchises it cares more about now. 343 are no longer Xbox golden studio. They are likely to shift things around or even close it all together and give the IP to someone else.

343i decided to pummel the IP into the ground...and when they see it didn't quite look like Glenn's face they decided to just keep on pummeling. Not sure if Glenn is the IP or the fanbase in this case though.

Profchaos604d ago

343 were never the golden studio they were a hastily thrown together b team when bungie said we want to do something else cya

Crows90604d ago

Well ...I didn't want to say it but I agree. Makes you wonder why Microsoft gave them the IP and didn't keep Bungie or any of the talent they acquired from any studio.
