The most overrated video games of this generation

GGG: "Last week, we paid tribute to some of the most underrated games of this generation (i.e. stuff you should have bought, but didn’t). Now it's time for the evil twin version! If you missed out on some of the overlooked gems from our previous article, it was probably because of these games.

While none of them are explicitly bad, they were all relentless over-hyped by games journalists and fanboys alike (seriously, even real life isn't worth 100%, so why award it to a game?).

I liked both, the only difference to me were the difficulty. U1 was tougher to me...I think U1 on Hard was harder than U2 was on Crushing.

I have to agree as well. I think the second one you knew where the story was going and who was the mastermind behind it all. The first one, on the other hand, had so many behind the plot that you couldn't tell who was the main villian of the game. Both have great gameplay and the stories are great, but if I had to pick one, I would definitly pick the first.

Of course it's just opinion, but I think the greatly improved gameplay, dialogue and presentation of the second one (and multiplayer, if you play it) far outweigh the slightly better story of the first one.

As for difficulty, I don't think there was much of a difference in terms of actual difficulty. The biggest thing that probably made it seem easier than the first one is that the checkpoints were much closer together in UC2. I know I probably died a lot more on Crushing is UC2 than Crushing in UC1, but it still seemed a quicker pace since there was less in between each retry.

Of course, both are amazing games, and I'm sure like you all, I can't wait for the reveal (and release) of UC3. Anxious to see what it will be about and where it will be located.

The first game's storyline was more difficult to figure out as you played. Never knew what was going to happen next. Uncharted was pretty mainstream with its storyline and easier to figure out, but much more exciting the way it unfolded with the Hollywood action movie scenes.

I enjoyed U1 far more than most games, getting the Plat on it was difficult, and enjoyable. In UC2 I agree it was too easy to beat it in crushing, but considering the co-op missions are near impossible on crushing theres so much more to do to keep you playing.

If you disliked the game thats fine, admit it and move the hell on. but dont attach monikers to a game which more than divlered on it's lofty promise on being better on all fronts of its predessors high accolade, who was greatly underrated and under appreciate because it came out in a time when the PS3 and Sony were pelted with hate from fanboys and idiotic media journalist who claim they were legit.

ND desreved every one of those 150+ awards and the 35 unanimously awarded game of the year awards it garnered for being a a significant cut above the the drivel and crap and regurgitated shooters released each fall with a new coat of paint. There is a reason why U2:AT released 10 months ago is still being looked at as the pinnacle of it's genre and a benchmark everyone in the industry is trying beat tells you something of the shear calibur of the game. The game is simply the best of 09 and perhaps the best game in a long time to grace this generation of gaming outside of mario galaxy 2 that is. :-)

It's a linear third person shooter. Possibly the most overrated game of all time. There's nothing special that sets it apart from other third person shooters other than the fact that it's pretty polished. Wow, big whoop. There are tons of games out there that dared to do something new, different and unique and were amazing for it. The Uncharted series has been playing it safe since the first one. GTA 4, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, LittleBigPlanet, MGS:4, Resident Evil 5, and especially Uncharted 2 are NOT overrated. I've had the most fun with all of these games this generation than I have with any other games that have come out this generation. Hey, they are fun, and pretty damn good.

And this article is so wrong about Uncharted 2. The story is brilliant (I always want to play it, not watch it), the controls are better than almost all games this generation (I love GTA4 and Read Dead Redemption, but they control like crap), and I still have not seen a game as beautiful as it is. There are better looking games, but know are as colorful and amazing to look at.

Whoever had a part in making this article should actually go play these games, because obviously they just copy what every one else says. I've heard these "It's not perfect" articles a million times.

Call of Duty W@W = While the original MW set the bar, W@W is more balanced and IMO is much better than MW2, arguably the best COD this gen.....Zombies = FUN

Uncharted 2 = This is where the author loses all credibility. UC2 is without a doubt one of the top 5 games this gen and will be on the list of greatest games ever.

I dont really agree with uncharted 2 being on there, its criticaly acclaimed and its graphics are second to none STILL. Its a game thats stood the test of time and most of all... it ISNT a first person shooter , like the majority in that saturated market.
Halo ODST was just one of those games that was there to milk the gullable ones. O.D.S.T. is actually an anagram for "Hey give bungie your money because we have master chief on the front cover", its just REALLY hard to make it out :P.
Dragon Age - Is one thats in a mix for me. Its got a great story line but the combat and graphics leave something missing, so yeah i'd probably agree that was over-rated.
Then theres modern warfare... definately worthy to be on this list in my opinion.

I totally agree with you that ODST was a give Bungie $60 for a $40 expansion (the original price with expansion label) but since when was Master Chief in Odst? He definitely not on the cover...those were ODST, I'm pretty sure you didn't play it. I love Uncharted 2 and I'm glad it got numerous awards, great sales, & critically acclaimed.

I never played Modern Warfare 2 nor Halo ODST.

And I like Dragon Age.

What I don't like is Final Fantasy XII (not XIII).

I don't like the story, the characters, & the music.

I do admit the Gambit system & Active Dimension Battle is great.

But I'm not that eager to called it "overrated" as it also got amazing sales & awards.

Simply not blind enough to say "it's overrated because I don't like it."

Naughty Dog sent spells through the gaming industry and gamers themselves last year. It deserves pretty much all the credit it received.

Would you kindly point out another game like it, please? With similar gameplay, obviously. And don't say tomb raider, the shooting mechanics aren't even close.

No other game has the same level of interactive set pieces (barring GOWIII), or the level of storytelling of Uncharted 2. Not to mention the brilliant characters, and fantastic acting. Uncharted 2 is also the first game (and possibly the first in any medium) to record voice-acting and mo-cap at the same time (something inFamous 2 is now doing).

Uncharted 2 pretty much set the bar for storytelling in videogames. It's far and away the leader in that category. It's what many developers will be striving to match for a long while, and don't be surprised if you begin to see a much larger emphasis on story in future games. I think you're underestimating U2's impact.

Is it the best videogame of all time? Probably not. But most people aren't making it out to be, either. It's a 96 on metacritic - the same as Mass Effect 2, Half Life 2, Goldeneye, and MGS 2. There's 14 games rated higher, including a couple of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games. So is it really that overrated?

Regardless, it's one of my personal favorites, and I'd be hard pressed to find a game that I think is better. If anything, I'd say it's been underexposed to the average gamer. More people should play it.

And yes, Uncharted 2 will be remembered for years to come. Unless you have a poor memory, I guess. Spider-man on PS1, and Spiderman 2 on PS2 both were far from perfect titles, but I have many fond memories of both. So do many others. Why should Uncharted 2 be any different? It's a GOTY winner, for Pete's sake.

The fact that it does recieve so many awards CAN make it overrated, which in this case is the writer's opinion. You can't say a game isn't overrated by shoving awards at them. Actually, the multiplayer for ORATORS was only firefight. The multiplayer on disc 2 is actually just stand-alone Halo 3 multiplayer but it included all the maps that were considered DLC. When u play the 2nd disc it shows on ur profile that ur playing Halo 3. Also I like Uncharted 1 and 2 but I don't think the supernatural angle was the best choice. I still had fun though.

I'd say that GTA IV is the most overrated game of all time. Generic GTA story, fuzzy ported graphics on my beloved PS3, and a BORING city.

Even though I love Uncharted 2, the story is cracked up to be one of the best. While good, the story is simple and to the point; it is easily overshadowed by phenomenal voice acting however (the best in any game ever IMO). The game isn't overrated. People just don't want to admit that the story is no MGS3. Its a simple quest with TONS of set pieces and PERFECT voice acting. That's almost better than a story for an action/adventure!

BUT........

How in God's name is MGS4 on that list? In what ways does anyone overrate it? The story is the most complex in the genre, the graphics (when it came out) were considered a milestone in gaming, and the gameplay is stealth PERFECTION.

Overrated? I disagree for a number of reasons with a majority of the games on this list.

I feel like the author of the article took games that are popular, and then calls them overrated. What he does not seem to understand is that there is a difference. The games became popular for a reason-because they are a lot of fun to play.

It might be cool to be the rebel, to say "I don't like the mainstream games, they are overrated" and to cause a discussion such as the one everyone is now commenting on, but if you don't like the majority of the games on this list, then I have no idea what the hell you would play this generation.

Just because a lot of people enjoy it does not mean it is overrated. On this list, UC2, LBP (seriously?), COD4, DA, Super Smash Bros, and the others? REALLY?

COD4 was great, it was MW2 that fudged everything up so badly. And by reviewers, GTA 4 was overrated, but that still made it a fun game. I would even say that a few of the games on this list were not even hyped that much, making the "overhyped" argument pretty hard to pull out as well.

It was a refreshing read, and you know what? A lot of those games do make a good case for being overrated. A lot of raving rabid fanboys won't be able to handle it, but the fact of the matter is that game critics routinely hand out perfect scores for games that they later berate and pick holes into with passing time.

I love LittleBigPlanet. I wouldn't exactly call it overrated, but it suffers from undeniable flaws. It's level editor is needlessly obtuse and seems to deliberately go out of its way to make things more difficult than they should be. There's little point in creating a level if there's no fun to be had. Modern Warfare 2 obviously deserves to be mentioned and it is. That game is an exact case in point to what I stated in the above paragraph. Perfect scores are dished out upon release, only for it to be the butt of all jokes in a never-ending stream of jokey articles from various publications, detailing the inconsistencies in plot, the lack of single player longevity and a wildly haphazard multiplayer that's prone to glitches and exploitative shenanigans. Why they didn't criticize these aspects in their reviews, I don't know.

And Metal Gear Solid 4 is the biggest pile of festering wankage I've ever been exposed to while gaming. I really wish I could have the hours back I spent watching that meaningless heap of cutscene-laden, expositionary, technobabble bollocks. FUCK that game.

Most reviewers no longer have the right to be called game critics, because they don't critique a game at all. They highlight it's good points with some glowing praise for the developer and quickly brush over the bad bits, which is almost the exact opposite of what a review should do.

U2 is a great game, but I have to agree, it's way overrated for the simple fact that the gameplay is ripped right out of gears of war, even the way the weapon select looks and works is identical, and mixed with some tomb raider in there.

There isnt 1 single original idea that U2 has, it just takes what others came up with and repackages it. So for that reason I can never consider it one of the best games this gen, just way too similar to other games out there that did it first.

Well theres really too many games that have been overrated this gen. The reason I thought Batman was overrated was because the experience was cut short so soon. I remember playing thinking there was going to be at least a few more hours of play time. Then I sh!t my pants when I seen the Joker on my screen ready to battle. Then I knew it was nearly over.

Graphics and sound were amazing, but the controls (you know, the actual GAMEplay) were 3rd rate. AI was horrible, and the puzzles were easy enough for a 4 year old.

Fun story, would have made a great movie, but way too linear. Just shy of a rail shooter IMO. Remember, we're talking about GAMES, so gameplay should be a big factor. Don't get me wrong, rehashing every other game play mechanic from Assassin's Creed to Gears of War is fun and all, but it's a situation of Jack of all trades, master of none.

Great game, definitely a 9/10, but come on, 9/10 games come out every month.

The AI in AC and Gears is dumb as rocks compared to the enemies in Uncharted, I know we haven't played AC and Gears that much when Uncharted is around, just trust me.

how did this game over rated when all the features like animation, story, gameplay, length time, online support, simple controls are top notch. Paying $60 is worth it than other games.

MGS4 has a different approach to the gamers, more of watching than playing. But i wouldn't say it over rated because the graphics and gameplay are top notch too.

You didn't explain why this game is over rated? KZ2 set up the bar in by graphics and animations. Gameplay is different because of the heaviness feel when you shoot ... so most of the players are frustrated. Some gamers can adjust easily using the controls and some don't. Still this game is not over rated as Guerrilla put a lot in the table to make this an AAA game. I wouldn't rate it 10, more likely 9.0 - 9.3.

KZ2-You make a terrible arguement as to how its gameplay should be allowed. Although, I must crazingly applaud for saying the correct word for KZ's gameplay: different, since it's not "realistic" like I've seen fanboys blurt out. The part where KZ2 shouldn't be considered AAA is the bland SP, while it has great enemy AI and gfx, certain situations are re-used and it has no story or artstlye whatsoever.

MGSIV-I find that to be about right with the average (93-94 average by critics) but previous entries have done extended cutscenes before IV, it wasn't anything new. Added good gameplay elements though

Bear in mind, I grabbed "simple gameplay" from the poster above me. I should add that the characters are great in UC2 as well but if you truly think the bread-n-butter of its story and storytelling is amazing then you're the one living in a fiction.

How can you possibly say "overrated" and "this generation" and "HALO 3" isn't the first idea that comes to mind let alone not make it on the list? (I seriously lost count of how many media outlets gushed about it's visuals and story, but I fondly remember the audible "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT!?" when everyone in the world finished it... yes, simultaneously) But oh no... Uncharted 2... that was overrated.
