Gran Turismo Is A Disposable Franchise (RunDLC)

While perusing the list of PSOne Classics on PSN, I noticed that Gran Turismo and its sequels were surprisingly absent. Jet Moto and Rally Cross made the cut, but Sony hasn’t delivered the celebrated racing franchise that essentially put PlayStation on the map, and it’s clear why. Gran Turismo is a disposable franchise.

What's the point of playing GT 1 when you can play GT 5 Prologue ( and GT 5 soon ) ?

@ Alpha-Male22 : There are PS1 titles which are still enjoyable.

-Alpha5027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

The author seems to try and say that GT is no fun because it looks bad and it's not fun after it goes out of date.

But truthfully you can say that about any PSOne title today.

He says games like Burnout and Ridge Racer are still fun. Personally I prefer racers like Burnout. Just more fun for me. But it makes little sense to say GT is disposable in 2010 when it's blatantly clear that as a PSOne title most people don't really care for it.

The assumption that just because it didn't make it on to the PSN Store YET (I assume it could launch before GT5 releaes) doesn't mean no one wants to play it.

-Alpha5027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

@hyrius

Oh I definitely agree. I'm enjoying the Final Fantasy games for the first time. Very enjoyable and lovely experience. Hell I even don't mind the graphics (much, stretching the image sort of makes it worse)

Point is, what is being said in this article can be said for any PSOne title (pizelated blocky graphics, out-dated gameplay mechanics, etc). but we nonetheless have access to these titles in Digital Distribution. And not only that, but judging by the 5-star rating system on PSN a lot of people still enjoy these games.

DelbertGrady5027d ago

"But truthfully you can say that about any PSOne title today."

2D titles like Castlevania SOTN still work imo. I think his point is that games that strive for realism feel old pretty quick as soon as they get a new updated iteration. It doesn't just apply to GT. It's the same with most sports games, although their improvements are usually pretty minor in comparison.

ChronoJoe5027d ago

I think you miss the point though Alpha.

Subjective interpretation can allow anyone, to believe that FF7, right now. Is superior to FFXIII. It's a unique experience, thereby one can justify playing, and enjoying it more than FXIII.

However, games like GT, the Madden and Fifa games. Are feature for feature, technically superior. I'm not saying people wouldn't buy them, I'm not saying people wouldn't get some fun out of them.

However, I am saying, there's no reason for someone who say, owns GT5, to buy and play GT1, outside of notsalgias sake. There's nothing wrong with how that works though.

-Alpha5027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

I get what you are saying about technical realism. But I still don't think that makes GT "disposable". It's a game, and despite being old it can still sell as a PSOne title. Nostalgia's sake? Sure, but isn't that what makes up a lot of PSOne sales? I see your point though: GT is about realism and every iteration aims to get more realistic. In that nature it makes little sense to go backwards unless GT5 is somehow less realistic. Point taken.

Edit: DigitalAnalog said it really well.

zootang5027d ago

Maybe because no one would have bought GT PSP when you could just buy Gran tourismo 1&2 from the store.

PoSTedUP5027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

edit: lol i didnt even see your comment zootang, well said +bubbles. that is exactly what i think.

i still jump on GT1 every now and then. imo the reason it is not on the PS store yet is because they want GTpsp sales and id much rather have GT1 or GT2 on PSP because they are simply bigger, realer, more completed games then GTpsp.

a franchise that is in the top 10 for most copys sold and that helped build three consoles is not disposable. never will be. (i didnt read the article tho.) just saying.

i have a rare retro copy of FF7 and i just cant get into it. but ill STILL play the hell out of RoadRash3D,MGS1, syryo, crash, tombraider etc. thats bc i am a retro gamer tho, i really enjoy going back and playing my favorite classics, i really appreciate them.

Each re-iteration is just simply getting closer and closer to the real thing. It's not a game you play for the story, the unbelievable plot or the hollywood A-list acting. This is like saying, "hey, let's continue to use Firefox 1.0 even though we've got the latest version, you know, for the nostalgia?". The game already did it's job with 1, 2, 3 and 4 all updated and innovated to keep hardcore racers happy as time goes by.

TROLL EATER5027d ago

cos its a disposable franchise. get it

HelghastKid5027d ago

Dude....why don't you always just comment like this? keeping it civil and not being like "It's because GT is a terrible game and will be destroyed by halo in the coming months." You actualy have good comments when you arent being such a fanboy.....oh well you only have one bubble so i guess ii will neever know

OneSneakyMofo5027d ago

Way to build up his hopes and dreams and suddenly squish them in an instance, lol.

HelghastKid5027d ago

lol yea thats usually how i am, and i gave him a bubble

ABizzel15027d ago

There's no need for GT on PS1, since the PSP already has it's version of GT, and GT 5 is coming out.

Most people who buy PS1 games, get them so they can also play them on the PSP.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony released GT1 on PSN right before GT5 comes out. Why not?

The scientific equation for the reaction boils down to mathamatics (algebra).

So he means the math.

What kind of oil? Are we talking brent crude or virgin olive?

Narutone665027d ago

that's been turned into lard.

ChronoJoe5027d ago

Yeah sure.

Well they're not, not fun. I mean they're not really less fun than they were then, the difference is you can have much more, playing the latest iteration, so that renders your fun on the past titles - seeming not so fun, when put into context.

Fifa 07 can still be fun. Nothin' wrong with it, but why play it if you have Fifa 10?

That’s cool! Knowing me I woulda still done the tests, but awesome they had cheats

Deathdeliverer403d ago

The article SHOULD say, “BLAST FROM THE PAST! Old school gamers in awe as GT4 cheat codes are discovered after 2 decades. These “cheats” offered free treats for gamers added time savers, additional ways to play, and more. Some magazines had sections or complete issues dedicated to them. Sound strange? Gamers today know them by another name, DLC or Downloadable content…

PhillyDillyDee403d ago

Sounds like a different article. You should write it. Can you do blogs on this site?

GT4 was my first ps2 game. I loved it, but the disc stopped working before I could complete it and I never got it replaced feelsbadman.

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part three - Gran Turismo 5 and the indie explosion

From Digital Foundry: "Welcome to the third part in the biggest DF Retro episode we've ever produced - a year-by-year look at how 1080p gaming fared on the PlayStation 3. Launched in 2007 touting its then-exclusive HDMI digital interface, Sony layered full HD gaming on top of its Cell processor and RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' as key selling points for its third generation console. Of course, we all know how that turned out - both Sony and Microsoft machines routinely ran the most advanced titles at sub-720p resolutions, often with questionable performance, so what happened to the 1080p dream?

In the first two parts of John Linneman's investigation, we've covered off the first four years of the Triple's lifecycle and moving into 2010, the overall fortunes of the PlayStation 3 continued to improve. The platform holder released - what was then - the most advanced motion controller in the console space, backed up by experiments with stereoscopic 3D, which turned out to be a short-lived but still formidable pairing. Combined with a strong E3 showing, PS3 was looking good.

However, it's fair to say that it was a fallow year for 1080p gaming on the system, with only Scott Pilgrim Saves The World's razor-sharp pixel art upscaling, Castle Crashers and Soldner X2's 3D/FMV stylings accommodating full HD output - alongside a wonderful Monkey Island remaster."

Just remember ladies and gentlemen, Sony never said all games would be 1080p. Only that the system would support games up to 1080p in a survey before the system was released.
https://spong.com/article/9...
And as we saw, some games did support it, some games tried their best to support it and some games didn't or never reached it.

Is a higher resolution great to have if you can do it? Sure. Is it necessary for a fun game? No

But what I find interesting is Eurogamer. Are they really talking about HD and PS3 in their article or are they really pushing their 4.50 Euros 4K video download subscription? Seems one is being used to sell the other. Just look at the bottom of the article.

Michiel1989649d ago

thats what every company tries to do, push for people to buy their products. Are you really gonna blame them for that?

ApocalypseShadow649d ago

Not all articles are about selling. They're about informing or entertaining.

Maybe I'm supposed to watch the video instead of reading. But I shouldn't have to click. But the article lazily tells us some games did hit 1080p and some didn't. I didn't learn anything new as I own the console. Then, they push a Patreon subscription.

Are you saying every opinion, preview, review and rant article requires a push to buy something now? Tell me which sites are prone to do so so that I can avoid them in the future.

Michiel1989649d ago

not everyone played during the ps3 era. I started during snes era but loved seeing articles/videos about how gaming evolved before that.

i dont think this article is trying to push you to get that patreon sub, it doesnt for me at least. I dont think theres anything wrong putting an ad at the bottom of the article. all the regular DF videos are free already.

SonyStyled649d ago

Wipeout HD on PS3, a remake of the PS1 game was 1080p 60fps. And that released in 2007-08

Christopher649d ago

This really feels like a filler article. I don't feel like I learned anything notable or substantial from this. I feel they could have reduced the unnecessary intro and over-explanation of things and put the whole series in one article for a more substantial and possibly informative piece rather than piece-mealing it out as they have.

dumahim649d ago

It's more about the video. DF Retro videos are for Patreon members first, and I think the whole thing was one big video. For the youtube channel, it gets chopped up and released weekly.

ApocalypseShadow649d ago

Chris is actually right on this one. Something known already was just kind of washed over in the article. Unless you're supposed to get more in the video. If more is in the video, then more could have been said in the article.

Only thing I learned new was that they are selling a subscription. My point though is that you gain more viewers by having better articles and content.
