Rumor: PS3 GTA IV "Unplayable"

A member of Britxbox.co.uk claims that the delay is due to development problems around the PS3 version and that the PS3 game is currently "unplayable".

"My mate is doing some work on the GTA and the game is running fine on 360 and is finished, they just can't release it becuase the ps3 version is unplayable."

Though this could easily just be another "My cousin's best-friend's sister's girlfriend's dad's nephew heard" type of rumor. His 4982 posts in the BXB community does give him some credibility. However untill we hear something directly from the devs this is still very much a rumor.

Im by no means a Sony fanboy. I dont own any Sony consoles and never have and I dont plan on ever getting one (a PS3). I own a 360 (have since day one on Nov 22nd, 05) and owned the Xbox 1, since day one. Bought both systems with 3 games, and even bought the VGA wire for $40 (which is way too much) for the 360 (and heck even had a VGA wire for the Xbox 1). Look at my profile and you will see that i have a gamertag. And have been on this site for a really long time. And i can honestly say this. The 360 fanboys are MUCH worst than the PS3 fanboys on this site. While its true that the PS3 fanboys seem way more immature and make weaker arguments. I can honestly say that the 360 fanboys are way more outrageous and way more fanatical, and complain way more. The thought that this site is ran by Sony faboys, is completely and utterly, ludicrous! Just look at how many bubbles the 360 fanboys have vs the PS3 fanboys. If this site was so full of PS3 fanboys, then none of you 360 fanboys would have any bubbles left. There is no such thing as a "Xbox" or "360" fanboy. Everyone that bought an Xbox was tired of Nintendo and seeking a different style than Sony. The most fanatical fans are Wii owners. GTA IV was due for release on 17th October. Rockstar have been using the Playstation 3 as the lead platform. An Xbox 360 team have been working besides the core team adapting code. Whilst the PS3 Blu-ray disc will easily accommodate the game, there have been problems fitting the game on to a single 360 DVD disc. Microsoft will not allow the game to be released on 2 disc as they are concerned the 360 will be compared unfavourably to the PS3. The situation has led to tension between Dan Houser and the Microsoft Empire as there is currently no way the game can fit on a single dvd.

Microsoft are currently working on a new compression technology for DVD9 discs, however this wont be available until next year. In a politically worded statement Sam Houser said "The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits. The top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are working closely with the team in Edinburgh right now, helping us to fully leverage the power of both platforms."

Whilst the PlayStation 3 version is all set for completion at the end of this month, Microsoft have tied Take Two into an iron-clad legal agreement that forbids them from releasing the game on any format unless the Xbox 360 is ready. This has meant that whilst the PS3 version will be ready for October, Microsoft have directly prevented its release. Second thought...I sure wish we did have the down and dirty goods as to why the game got delayed. It's pretty simple, this is what we know

1. Some time ago Rockstar announced the PS3 version would be 'weeks' later then the 360 version. First indication there is something wrong with the PS3 version;
2. All of the stuff shown, was running on 360 hardware.

I'll say 1+1=2. It isn't that hard to figure out with the facts above, that the PS3 version isn't running like it should. They might just need 1.5 month extra, but they don't want to launch so shortly before Christmas. So they put it way back to spring 2008, to get attention on E3 etc etc.

Yeah PS3 version did cause the delay. Why would it otherwise been pushed back some time ago already for 'weeks'? Why do all demo's run on 360's up till now?

I'm a PS3 owner and if my version is the reason for the delay then I'll accept it. If the 360 is at fault then Xbox fans should also accept it. I think I speak for all when i say that we all want a proper and more detailed explanation as to why a hyped-up, popular game has been delayed.

GTA4 was built off of the Table Tennis engine on 360, so it would make sense that the Xbox version was the lead dev platform. Porting to PS3 from 360 has been difficult for many top developers so I don't blame Rockstar.

I wonder then why they aren't going to finish the 360 version and release it first. Take-Two is having financial issues and the influx of revenue would certainly help them, not to mention the 50 mil contract they have with MS. Is Rockstar purposefully trying not to help one console over the other? Or is it that both versions really could use more polish time? The full story will no doubt be told someday...

Actually mintrieri, Rock* already got the 50 mil, because they said the delay of the game wouldn't effect their deal with Msoft(the content was supposed to come next year).

Rockstar had to ask for permission to break contract with Sony to get the 50 mil from Msoft, as long as they released both GTA IV versions at the same time.

And lastly, it will probably bring more profit next spring without all the extra competition. Rockstar and Take-two are looking to be sitting solo in the late spring/early summer block as far as big name titles go. Whereas this fall brings competition from the big holiday game rush, as well as Take-Two already having some of their other titles releasing.

Who cares about the console comparisons, what really should be highlighted in this rumor is that THIS GAME IS FINISHED!!! So that means all the bugs are ironed out, story is there, gameplay is there, and they've just been teasing gaming sites and magazines with early builds from last year right?! lol!!! (that'd be sarcasm for those who take it too seriously).

Unless they're the most efficient programmers in the world and have only been showing the public snippets of a finished product, i highly doubt this is a finished game for whatever system, which is why I believe this rumor is false :)

I would agree with that, development on the ps3 is fairly new and with something as new and complicated as the cell I would expect more problems like bugs and glitches. But the game being unplayable is a joke.

GTA IV was due for release on 17th October. Rockstar have been using the Playstation 3 as the lead platform. An Xbox 360 team have been working besides the core team adapting code. Whilst the PS3 Blu-ray disc will easily accommodate the game, there have been problems fitting the game on to a single 360 DVD disc. Microsoft will not allow the game to be released on 2 disc as they are concerned the 360 will be compared unfavourably to the PS3. The situation has led to tension between Dan Houser and the Microsoft Empire as there is currently no way the game can fit on a single dvd.

Microsoft are currently working on a new compression technology for DVD9 discs, however this wont be available until next year. In a politically worded statement Sam Houser said "The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits. The top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are working closely with the team in Edinburgh right now, helping us to fully leverage the power of both platforms."

Whilst the PlayStation 3 version is all set for completion at the end of this month, Microsoft have tied Take Two into an iron-clad legal agreement that forbids them from releasing the game on any format unless the Xbox 360 is ready. This has meant that whilst the PS3 version will be ready for October, Microsoft have directly prevented its release. That's what happens when the Houser brothers sell their arse for the Microsoft dollar. Stupid limey gimp-bags

Rubish, the problem is that you have the PS3's Blu-ray = at least 25GB. Then you have DVD 9 at 8GB, rockstart have already said their having problems fitting GTA 4 on the 360, so that that info away and work out the problem you're self.

my littler bro is 14 years old and he works for rockstars and the reason that GTA4 got delayed was cuz of the insufficient space the 360 has that it got delayed;) 10gig wasent enough so they had too cut out some things from both versions. and i swear this is all true since my 14 year old bro is working on the game he also worked on manhunt;)

ZyKlOn, are you an idiot? i just had to ask. the PS3 isn't the lead dev console, nor is the 360, they are both being individually developed, no porting involved. the PS3 is the cause because of the well known difficulties in programming, its so bloddy hard to program the damn thing almost every single developer who has made a PS3 game has confirmed it's nigh on impossible!

the only thing that the could be wrong with the 360 is compression issues, and thats not the system thats microsoft refusing to let more than a select few people make games that require a hard drive. final fantasy requires the hard drive but thats it for hard drive only games as far as I know, at least in north America. if either version would be released early, its the 360 version because it can actually be coded by your average developer. anybody who denies that is just a fanboy, R* even admitted the PS3 version is behind in development!

to put in short, neither console gets a port version, PS3 most likely the problem, microsoft is made of idiots who refuse to let devs use the consoles full power.

Ok, here's 2 cents for everyone - take it or leave it.

I work for a European QA company: Over the past couple of months a few of our employees applied and joined Rockstar (to work as testers on GTAIV).

Around a month ago, I asked one of the staff who keeps in touch with the aforementioned employees how they were getting on in their new positions with GTAIV - he replied that he was told "the PS3 version would be delayed by a couple of months, as it needed further testing".

And then just a few days ago everyone found out both versions would be delayed until March '08.

I don't know if this helps anyone's theories, but there you go.

@lavdrim - isn't it against UK employment law to hire 14 year olds?
