BioWare: Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 release dates were 'too close'

BioWare VP Greg Zeschuk has said that he'd have much rather had "a better space between" the release of Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2, and that releasing the two games within such close proximity of each other "wasn't really ever our intent".

In my opinion Dragon Age is better franchise

/sure

dont forget to say imo
or the fanboys will attack

BeaArthur5038d ago

Greek God...he is a fanboy which is why he said it. He can't play Mass Effect on the PS3 so by his fanboy logic Dragon Age is better. I think they are both great franchises personally.

ExplosionSauce5038d ago

Dragona Age is better.
It's more of an RPG than ME2 ever was.

capjacksparrow5038d ago

I think Mass Effect is way Way Way better than Dragon Age. I thought Dragon Age was decent, but Mass Effect really captures my imagination, and the dialogue system is amazing. This is obviously my opinion, and I wish it were on the PS3, unfortunately I had to go out and buy a 360 for Mass Effect, I would never have done the same for Dragon Age were it not on the PS3.

Cheeseknight285038d ago

I think one of my biggest problems with Dragon Age was the lack of voice acting on your main character. It just seemed so... archaic. I don't want to play an RPG for 60+ hours if my main character is going to be completely lifeless for the entirety of the game.

Well, except for when he/she has sex.

throw_this_away5038d ago

I agree that the dialogue system was phenomenal in ME1 and 2 (especially 2). It really felt like a movie. ME2 was the most immersive game I have ever played for that reason. People argue that a large inventory system is "more rpg", but I argue that ME2 was more immersive (there is nothing that reminds you more that you are playing a game than spending tons of time swapping gear in a menu).

PLus, in this generation of consoles, the graphics of DAO were just shocking. Call me a graphics whore... but this is 2010, not the PS2/xbox generation.

chrisgay5038d ago

I don't think either of them come close to Knights of the Old Republic. Although, I'm yet to play Mass Effect 2- didn't enjoy the first one as much as reviewers and my friends did so I've been delaying.

MariaHelFutura5038d ago

Mass Effect 1/2 is the best reason to own a 360, IMO.

Darkfiber5038d ago

They are both better on PC.

Systematrix5038d ago (Edited 5038d ago )

There's a Mass Effect 1/2? What this before Mass Effect 1? :P

Does it only have 500 achievement points?

..ok, I'm done.

lelo2play5038d ago

Dragon Age is a good game... but Mass Effect 1 + 2 are much better games, without a doubt.

SephireX5038d ago

ME1 was a great game but had its annoyances and was an 8/10 for me at best. Those annoyances include: Poor Mako control, long unnecessary loading times, poor frame rates, repetitive side missions and imbalanced classes. Though, ME2 fixed those problems for the most part and is a well deserved 9.5/10.

neoandrew5038d ago

LOL, how can u compare such different universes ? This is just a fanboy opinion, really tell me how can u say that black i better than white, its all depends on taste.

Baka-akaB5038d ago

sorry i love and prefer my ps3 ... but ME1 and 2 were way better handled and overall better .

DA's dialogue system wasnt that good , the story was great , but the gameplay , due to some weird tentitve to fuse action games , and the good old D&d system from baldur's and Neverwinter , suffered .

PLus DA had plenty issue that relied on the mod community to fix .

Christopher5038d ago

Love both Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises. They really do a good job in their respective RPG genres (fantasy and sci-fi).

As far as distance? I think they need to release ME before DA just because DA requires so much more time to complete everything in the game. My first playthrough with trying to do everything I can with one character was almost 90 hours. ME2 was only about 45 hours, and I did everything.

ECM0NEY5038d ago

Better then Mass Effect 2? lol you must love slow boring combat.

StarCSR5038d ago

I like Dragon Age, but not a lot of WRPG's will ever be able to beat Mass Effect for me... But hey, that's the scifi nerd in me speaking :-)

When you look at a game like ME2 and then look at Dragon Age with it's subpar graphics, it really makes you wonder where the priorities are. There's no reason for Dragon Age to look as shoddy as it did, even if it played well.

Nihilism5038d ago

Have you played the witcher?...Dragon Age did not play well. It was Ok at best....broken at worst. Mass Effect had it's flaws but I wasn't snoring though the story or combat in ME

IaMs125038d ago

Man i just cant seem to get into The Witcher, i still have it installed going back and forth trying to get hooked, i want to be but just cant
course im not very far in it at all, soo maybe thats it

Nihilism5038d ago

It's a very different game. I don't think I got into it the first time either. But like you I had only put a few hours in.

It has the most mature story of any game i've ever played. You walk around the slums etc or the marshlands and it's raining and overcast and the whole game just sells the atmostphere. Everything from the music to the art style...and awesome voice work really makes you empathise with the story. Most games are shallow...and you are very aware you are playing a game. But in the witcher you follow all the quest lines because it makes you give a F about the characters and the outcomes.

I can't recommend it highly enough. Just delete your save start again, and get in RPG mode where you are willing to experience a new story.

It was my benchmark for the D.A....I said "if it's even half as good as the witcher I'll be happy"...and it wasn't. The witcher from 2007 has better graphics than 2009 D.A... Make sure you download the enhanced edition add on if you don't have that version already ( it's free to download ).

Baka-akaB5038d ago (Edited 5038d ago )

I agree with Dchalfont. DA was a poor man's "The Witcher" mixed with outdated baldur gate gameplay elements that never really meshed .

After a while i was appalled by the gameplay . Dragon age's concept and whole reason of existing , many years ago , was precisely to free Bioware from the outdated D&D system , and here they were recreating it , down to its worst aspects , mins the d&d license .

Now a poor man's Witcher can still be a pretty good game ...

IaMs125038d ago

I will thank you. I do have the Enhanced Edition, and i think ill give it another shot definitely. bubbles for ya guys :)

dragon age was just testing the water and it paid off big time

Alos885038d ago

You know how sometimes boxers can end a fight with just one good punch? That's how I feel here. Had they waited just a few months more it wouldn't have felt like Bioware was throwing everything at the wall at once and praying something stuck.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave38d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan38d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy41d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198941d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken41d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198941d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack41d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername41d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid41d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan42d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid41d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.
