Starcraft 2 – 5 million copies on launch day? Totally!

GTA IV sold 3.8 million copies on launch day and it established itself as the best selling video game in history. But then in November 2009 came Modern Warfare 2 and mopped the floor with it, selling an outrageous 4.7 million copies on launch day in USA and UK alone. That’s $310 million dollars in just 24 hours. Hard to beat, don’t you think?

buh, buh, buh - I thought PC gaming was dead and everyone just pirates PC games?!?!

peeps5032d ago

I imagine playing through battle.net reduces piracy?

itisa5032d ago (Edited 5032d ago )

85% percents of it obviously comes from South Korea.

Mmmkay5032d ago

i thought you were dead and everyone else were somali troll pirates.

XactGamer5032d ago

As long as people want elite gaming PC will never die.

Conloles5032d ago

Lol console players are so jealous of this game.

Imperator5031d ago

I think this game seriously has a chance at GOTY (at least for me). Only 11 more hours.

OwNizzleD5031d ago

It wasn't dead it was just sleeping zzzzzz

Shuklar5031d ago

It is in Blizzards best interest to liberate North Korea. More sales!

Perjoss5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

was quite amazed how many people were queued outside GAME on oxford street for the midnight release party. I was in the pretty fast moving queue for almost 2 and a half hours and I still managed to get an expensive edition, got it signed by a couple of blizzard people too, well done guys.

evrfighter5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

Looks like the 9000lb gorilla that was sitting in the room being ignored just got got up and started crackin skulls.

gg console gaming nice try.

better luck next time. Once blizzard drops launch numbers. there will be much tear buckets needed.

I was gonna wait till thursday to buy sc2 for my home lan. But wut the hell. 3 more sales of sc2 for blizzard incoming.

of south korea's population played the first one...so yeah, im getting mine tonight midnight release :)

WhatARump5032d ago (Edited 5032d ago )

"The target is 4.8 million copies, but I say it’s going to be least 5 million."

Isn't this just a random prediction? Just saying that the article writer is "assuming" it's going to be the best selling game of all time.

Anon19745032d ago

I'm very much looking forward to the new Starcraft game, but I find these type of predictions usually don't amount to anything. We always hear of games that have "OMG! XYZ titles has 5 million pre-orders! Wow!" and then the game sells 500,000 in the first couple of weeks and you're left wondering where the hell all those supposed pre-orders went.

I don't doubt that Starcraft 2 will be huge, I just have a hard time believing the "preorder hype" that so many get caught up in.

Spydiggity5031d ago

I don't see it touching 5 million. I'd say about 50-80% of the people i know that loved starcraft are convinced their current rigs can't run the new one. I think starcraft 2 will sell amazingly well, and probably shatter a buncha records...but i don't think it's going to happen opening day. it's just going to have REALLY LONG LEGS. Long, sexy legs

Kazu0 Hirai5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

He is not assuming it will be the best selling game of all time, he is predicting it will be the highest selling opening day, because of the awesomeness of the first one and it has 12 years of hype behind it.

I would not be surprised if it sold 5 mil in the 1st day because of its worldwide popularity, but I have my doubts only because it is a PC exclusive. I think over the next couple years it will become one of the best selling games of all time. Blizzard games have supreme longetivity (its been scientifically proven).

@Spydiggity: what kind of rigs do your friends have?? Starcraft 2 will run on pretty much anything unless you have a pc from the early 80s. ok maybe thats exaggerating a tad.

Spydiggity5031d ago

i'm talking about the misconception. not reality. and i don't know what they have, i don't goto all their homes and inspect their puters.

i should also clarify that i meant to say i don't see starcraft 2 touching 5 million the first night. i'm 100% positive it will sell more than that overall.

but i understand the appeal, the first game was excellent and SC2 will obviously will be on the same level.

btw i want diablo 3 dammit!

JsonHenry5031d ago

Me too man, me too.

I like Star Craft and I will be in line at midnight tonight to get it. But I really prefer CnC to SC RTS play style.

However, EVERYONE agrees that Diablo 3 is going to be the best hack and slash EVER!

Ilikegames765031d ago

made by Blizzards is an instant buy for me except for WOW.

Kazu0 Hirai5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

The first game was phenomenal and I would consider buying this game even if I didn't like RTS just because blizzard crafts such quality products. SC2 will have the best story in any RTS since SC1 guaranteed. You can't go wrong with this purchase, the game has been finished for 3 years for christ's sake, it took them this long to polish it. If it was any other developer SC2 would have been released in 2006.

PS: Considering Starcraft is a national sport in South Korea, and they have a population of 50 million, Starcraft 2 could EASILY break records for day 1 worldwide sales. Way more than Modern Glichfare 1.1

Kingdom Come5032d ago

I don't think theres a big enough market for the game to sell at that extent on launch day. It's only on PC and it's RTS, GTA IV was on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, was part of a long running series and was an open world action game...
Still, game looks great and I hope it does extremely well.

Noctis Aftermath5032d ago (Edited 5032d ago )

You underestimate PC gamers, especially how many korean gamers will be buying this.

I swear that most PC gamers will be getting this game as it just owns so freakin' much.
RTS might be considered niche(i'm unsure of this) but starcraft would be the exception.

5 Million copies does seem unlikely but this is a game that fans of the original starcraft have wanted for over a decade so i wouldn't rule it out.

FarEastOrient5032d ago

The numbers for World of Warcraft are very nice on each launch day even for expansion packs...

Baka-akaB5032d ago (Edited 5032d ago )

Of course it got the fanbase for it without the need for consoles .
You dont seem to get how popular starcraft is ... Korea and a few asian zones on their own would easily do a million at least .

Karum5032d ago

You are really underestimating the potential of Starcraft 2.

The Starcraft fanbase is massive and the majority of those 11 million Starcraft players have been waiting a decade for this game.

Will it hit 5 million on launch day? I have no idea but I'll tell you what, I wouldn't be surprised if it does.

peeps5032d ago

yep, i'm deffo getting it being an rts fan and i know several ppl who arn't rts fans who will be giving this game a go

The Great Melon5032d ago

Shoot, I don't normally buy new games or even know when new games actually release, but I am considering going out tomorrow to buy it. I have waited 11 or so years for this game.

PopEmUp5031d ago

but I already got mine :)

Kingdom Come5032d ago

Honestly, I have no doubt what so ever that this game will be amazing, I just couldn't see it making 5 Million sales on its opening day. I meant no offense, as I said, the game looks f'in Brilliant...

STONEY45031d ago

"Although it looks a great game...
I don't think theres a big enough market for the game to sell at that extent on launch day. It's only on PC and it's RTS"

Strategy games aren't niche at all on PC. Company of Heroes, Total War series, and the Civilization series are good examples and all of them have sold VERY well and are popular franchises.

This has to be fake because PC gaming is dead /sarcasm

Seriously why do people think PC gaming is dead? Is it because NDP doesn't show PC sales.

Johnny_Bravo5032d ago

"Seriously why do people think PC gaming is dead?"

Very high piracy?

Raf1k15032d ago

high piracy = lots of people pirating games = lots of people playing games

Johnny_Bravo5032d ago

@Raf1k1 - Seeing how the article is about sales, my post regarding piracy was about sales as well, not amount of people playing.

Gun_Senshi5032d ago

It has very high piracy and easier to pirate then PC. You also get to play games before

kevnb5032d ago (Edited 5032d ago )

and because the media wants it dead it seems. PC game sales are actually good and underestimated while console games are much worse than they make them out to be.

OpenGL5032d ago

Actually, most of Starcraft 2's sales should be shown on the NDP since Blizzard refuses to release Starcraft 2 on Steam. Sure you CAN buy it on Battle.net, but I imagine not too many people will since it's such a new platform. Most of this games sales will be made the old-fashioned way.

Cheeseknight285031d ago

Can't really blame them for no Steam. You'd have to sign into Steam and Battle.net just to play.

Not that companies haven't done it before...

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27171d ago (Edited 171d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris171d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster171d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris171d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT171d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster171d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Extermin8or3_171d ago

This right here is the fucking problem.

Don't really agree on Dead Space being number one. But usually come down to preference. Alot of good games on the list. I was hoping to see Aliens vs Predator by Sierra on the list, as it was a great game. Anyways for me the number one is still Halo but Mass Effect was really good up to the infamous ending of the third game.

Rebel_Scum1152d ago

I would put Flashback on my list. Its got such a great tone and background design. The cutscenes were pretty good too.

1152d ago
Master of Unlocking1151d ago (Edited 1151d ago )

DEAD SPACE 2 as number 1? Really? I've only ever played DEAD SPACE 1 (without finishing it) and, sure enough I liked it a lot, and have been yearning for getting to grips with an hd remastered trilogy for the PS4/XBox One/PS5/XBox Series X/S, but what about Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided? Alienation (to quench our thirst for twitching fingers' top-down dual-stick shooters)? Or even Cyberpunk 2077 (once the game has been re-released and all the kinks have been ironed out)?

If not at the #1 spot, it seems to me these games deserved to be on the list somewhere.

But what really strikes me as unfair is, if you're going back to the PS3/XBox 360 era with DS2, how could you forget to mention Killzone 2 & 3? The Resistance games? When it comes to Sci-Fi FPS, it's inadequate not to pay your respects to those stellar franchises! Heck, even the Crysis trilogy should've been there IMHO.
