GTA IV: Killing The Xbox 360, Boosting The PlayStation 3

For as much flak as Peter Moore got while leading the Xbox 360 team, it's hard to deny that his penchant for adorning his arms gave gamers a couple of very memorable moments. I mean, before Peter Moore's E3 2005 stunt, had you ever seen another executive get a (fake) tattoo for a key franchise (Halo)? And then, not to be outdone, walk into a second E3 with another (fake) tattoo for another franchise (GTA IV)?

If Peter Moore were still at Microsoft, I have a sneaking suspicion he'd be seeking out a tattoo-removal specialist. Because today, that enthusiastic showing two E3s ago that his "mission" was "accomplished" now looks like a 20-something inking the name of a one-night-stand on his bicep.

Because they are multiplatform makes it worse for sony because that means u could get the same game on a much cheaper platfrom with the same quality maybe even better (althoug i think all multiplatform games look the same on both consoles) also if u look at sales allmost all multiplatforms between 360 and ps3 the 360 sales nearly triple the ps3 sales of the same game and thats obviously because of install base soooo i dont see how thats goin to change this holiday season

This is bad news for sony, good for microsoft. This was probably the best game for the PS3 this holiday, now it is gone. And this game has a huge sony-fan following which will not help now for this holiady. Good news for MS because they have Halo and Mass Effect coming out before and after the GTA release was supposed to be, so they are good, some idiot talked crap about Mass effect earlier, clearly a jealous sony fan, MASS EFFECT IS BETTER THAN ANY PS3 GAME THIS YEAR AND PROBABLY NEXT ALSO. It's about console sales, multiplatform games aren't console sellers. The first party and exclusives are the games that drive most consoles sales. Halo, is the only game that I can see that is going to sell consoles for the 360.

Mass Effect and Bioshock are great games, but they are new IPs and won't draw console sales. If they had a Gear 2 etc.. that would have helped. But they were hoping to entice Ps2 owners to the 360 over the holidays by releasing GTA4, that was the whole point of the exclusive content.

M$ should have used that 50 million to make new IPs, like Sony did.

It probably would hurt MS a bit more but it will depend on how they spin it. MS could hurt Sony's rep if they reinforce the image of the PS3 as a difficult system to program for and the cause of the delay (an unconfirmed rumor speculated by Pachter).

My feeling though is that both versions will greatly benifit from the extra polish time resulting in a better GTA4 which is a win for all gamers. Also, with such a crowded slate of great titles coming for the 360 this holiday, it might now come out at an otherwise slow period.

The general consumer doesn't care if a game is harder to "PORT" to a particular console. If a game is "exclusive" you won't hear that complain, this is "exclusively" a multiplatform issue. But in general, an average consumer doesn't take devs problems with making a game on a system as a factor when buying a console.

I used to be a huge Ace Combat fan, until every game released was pretty much the same thing with better graphics. I was disappointed that AC6 was only coming to the 360 until I saw a demo video of it. Once again, new game with the EXACT same levels/scenarios. The city location on the sea front with the bridge...EXACT as the previous 2 Ace Combats with the same level. Bored. Looking forward to a fresh jet fighter game to come to PS3, just waiting for an announcement.

It has no benefit for either side. Although if I did have to take a guess at it, I would say Sony benefits the most from this. Not so much to do with GTA, Just it takes a very critical title away from Microsoft, when, be honest, Microsoft needs big titles right now to push hardware sales before PS2 converts hit the PS3, and apparently every single (non paralyzed) person on the face of the planet is a Wii convert.

Another thing is Sony is assuring the timid folk the PS3 is just about to truly hit full stride with a stellar game lineup, and still 2 gaming conventions to do before the holiday season.

I can some of the blogger's points. I mean, as far as "killer apps" for the 360, you have Bioshock (Aug), Halo (Sept), and Mass Effect (Nov). Now, Halo is the mass market game, but I don't know if Bioshock and Mass Effect will have that mass market appeal. I know I'll get Mass Effect (not Bioshock though) but can it move consoles?

GTA would have been that other big name game with wide appeal. Without it, who knows what can happen.

It all depends on how Bioware/Microsoft market Mass Effect. Honesty both PS3 and x360 are going have killer 3rd party games coming out in late October/November.

As far as marketing for Mass Effect, I don't think that'll be a problem. I'm sure they'll market the heck out of it. I just don't know if it'll have that mass appeal. It is a massive game that'll be methodical in pacing and story and etc. (if it's anything like KOTOR or Jade Empire) If most people had a choice between that and something like Madden or even Assassin's Creed, I don't doubt they'd choose the quicker paced games.

But one thing came up multiple times now, and that is the typical X-Box360-Fanboy statement that Microsoft should SUE R* etc epp. I ask on what grounds could Microsoft Sue R* ?

The only "details" we know about the R*/MS 50 mil deal are 3 points that have been semi confirmed by Peter Moore before he fled and burned the bridges behind:

1) The X-Box360 version of GTA4 shall not be released AFTER the PS3 version
2) Any official screening of GTA4 shall be on the X-Box360 platform
3) The X-Box360 version shall get downloadable added content that is exclusive to that platform.

1) check, the delay is not only for the X-Box360 version but for both versions, hence R* is honoring the deal
2) check, every screening so far was exclusively on X-Box360, even though R* said the PS3 version is not far behind the X-Box360 version. (On a sidenote, this part of the deal led to the failed analysis of the beloved Analyst M.Patcher cause no media was shown on the PS3)
3) As the game is not even released no one could verify the exclusivity of the downloadable content, but R* repeatedly assured the press that there is content that is and will be exclusive to X-Box360 (naturally that does not rule out OTHER content being exclusive for PS3 download)

So what would MS tell the judge ? "but ... but ... but, its delayed" and what would he answer ? "but they still honor your deal and delay ALL versions"

I fail to see any ground for a legal action outside of fanboys wet dreams of spite and hate.

And i do not believe this helps R* this X-Mass season. But neither do i believe this helps either MS or Sony, actually it does NOTHING to both. Microsoft still has Halo3, even though they apparently moved the release earlier to help GTA4 not getting drowned in it. But Halo3 will still sell enough games. Though i don't think it will move that many X-Boxes additionally. Cause Halo was and is a mostly X-Box centric issue, and whoever wants it already has his X-Box360 wired up for this fall. Halo3 could even hurt Microsoft, cause as its again a title that really taxes the system cause it can be taken for granted that it will not look shabby. And with the recent cases of Microsoft coming out with the truth on the RRoD issue, as it being a design flaw and related to system overheating, Halo3 could be the death of many X-Boxes and result in a flood of replacement action in the Microsoft repair centers. That normally leads to prolonged waitcycles and hence to frustrated customers and LOUD Internet chatter on sites like .. n4g .. And honestly the X-Box360 does not need yet another media storm regarding its faulty hardware, that could drive away potential customers for the X-Mass sellout.

For Sony its a missed great franchise for the X-Mass season, too, though its a 3rd party one, and Sony is known to focus mainly on 1st and 2nd party stuff.

So neither will sit in his office and weep that GTA4 has missed the X-Mass2007 fun, they will shrug it off as minor bother.

The only group that is affected is the customers aka GTA fans, cause they will not see GTA4 this season, and that makes em angry and sad. I feel with the hardcore fans regardless what flavor of console they own or prefer. It is still one possible great game less for fall 2007.

I dont think this is a quality article, and I hate it when people think when any idiot on the internet writes an opinion article its somehow 'fact', but I think that people will still buy GTA IV regardless of when it is released and for what ever system they own. The public perception is that the 360 version of the game will be superior because of the exclusive DLC so if people have a choice they will purchase the 360 version.

What I think does change though is that GTA IV will be less important as a system seller for PS3 and 360 as it misses the christmas lineup.

Sony's problem is that they have not got anything proven as a system seller to match Halo 3 (I dont think anyone could argue that Sony has a 'stronger' lineup than MS this holidays) now but Microsoft's problem is that the DLC they bought will probably have less of an impact now so it wont be as effective as it was before.

-Most likely they ran into development problems because they were making the game for 2 different consoles simultaneously(first time ever), and one *cough*PS3*cough* that they hadn't ever worked on.

-Rock* is keeping to their deal with Msoft, but they also can't break the deal with Sony

Rockstar has no intentions to break the deal with Msoft, as they are still releasing the game for 360(with content not on PS3). However nowhere did it say that they can't release content for PS3(highly unlikely nonetheless), and this entire story is this journalist's opinion on the situation.

the wii sells because it's cheap. but the games for it are the same tired titles that were on the GC and N64. so this system is a fad that will die out when people realize they aren't getting new titles. plus, no HD capability. in todays world, that's ridiculous. the 360 failure rate is terrible and after halo they have no first party games that matter. plus, name three first party or exclusive blockbuster titles coming to 360 next year. the ps3 is a solid piece of electronics that has a great holiday lineup as well as huge releases for 2008. it also has BR built in the system which is what is helping it become the number 1 high def format. sony doesn't have to be "cheap" to be successful. they seem to have a cohesive plan in place for the long term.

Many of Sony's European developers seem to have not showed their stuff at E3 in July. It's possible we'll see several more exclusive titles coming to PS3 in a few weeks. Leipzig will be a MUCH better place than E3 to show them off this time around.

Yeah, totally understand, but really, I was so biased against XBox 1 till I played Halo last gen, and really feel kind of enlightened now(I know). But, I was actually just posting a comment in another section on where people suggested Sony just buying Rock*, or * saying they're PS3 exclusive after GTAIV, which isn't entirely a terrible idea (it would stop the Rockstar turf wars between sony/Msoft). The announcement of GTA 4 delayed made me happy since it was first announced. It's pretty obvious that everyone says PS3 is more vulnerable in 2007 than they will be in 2008. And this puts the GTA crowd on pause until the PS3 is in better position with better games in 2008.

Many predicted that XBOX 360 would knock PS3 out this holiday because XBOX 360 could entertain both the GTA crowd and the Halo crowd and PS3 was still vulnerable with unproven blu ray and a higher price tag.

But to my surprise some XBOX 360 fanboys have found a way to see this in their favor. Regardless I still honestly think the delay favors PS3.

I agree with this comment. Other than Alan Wake (which looks good and has me intrigued, but don't know much about it) what is coming out that isn't multiplatform?

Also, the idea that the 360 version of GTA is "still" the better version because of episodic content is speculative. If anything, it's not even a factor now because the first episode won't drop until the end of fiscal 08. Depending on how Take-Two keeps records, that is either march of april 2009. That means the second episode won't come until later in '09. Now two things come from that

--Going by how MS handles consoles, these episodes come at the end of the consoles life, so its a question of is it worth it to the gamer when MS will have their next Xbox out sometime the following year?
--other sandbox type games, specifically Prototype and Infamous will be out and they look pretty interesting. Also, there will no doubt be better games on both consoles before this EC drops that'll make people say "meh" to this content.

I suspect that many Sony supporters do so because the company has been reliable and for no other reason. If the video game industry is like a horse race, would you go with the horse that broke its ankle mid race last time and was prematurely sent to the glue factory (MS)? Or would you go with the horse that has won 1st place two times running (Sony)? I think the answer is clear.

Some people are bitter and take things too seriously and hate Sony, I am an adult and I understand business, and all hype aside, Sony has proven themselves a strong player in the video game industry, what does MS's performance with the original XBOX tell you?

At least admit that as a strong MS supporters this generation you are going off of faith and faith alone, like a neglected child waiting for that dead beat dad to show up for their birthday party year after year.

The thing that gets me with 360 fanboys ( I own a 360 but am not a fanboy--don't believe me, check the gamertag RHood022) is that they bash on the lack of PS3 titles coming out this year. In spite of the fact that there are numerous list highlighting at least 15 big name exclusive from competent developers no less and several high profile multiplatform games dropping before the end of the year.

There response, "Well, ours are better--we have Bioshock, Halo and Mass Effect (sometimes Ace Combat is thrown in there as well)" But for me, I'll get Halo and Mass Effect, I could care less about Bioshock (I keep thinking it'll be like Prey in terms of replayability), flight games and old-school jrpg (although Lost Odyssey is on my radar, I cannot get back into the turn based combat)

Also, they bring up these games that, outside of a select few I doubt the mass market would careless or even hear about.

All the people i know who are waiting for GTA to buy their consoles are buying on ps3 simply because they owned ps2's. Now that GTA IV has exclusive content for microsoft i am guessing this was how msoft planned to counterbalance this effect. Granted they are new IP's outside of Ratchet and Clank, but just like the 360 outside of HALO 3 all those games you mentioned are new IP's.

You 4got MGS4, GT5 and killzone as well. I don't know why i don't see how the 360 has a MUCH better games line up. Splinter cell is gonna be mediocre IMO, Bioshock and mass effect are going to be excellent games IMO but thats pretty much all that seriously interests me on the 360 side. PGR4 i don't like arcade type racers except for burnout and thats on ps3. Too human is going thru development problems and no one knows when thats coming out but it probably won't be this year.

Delaying GTA had an effect on both consoles, but more on PS3 in my opinion. MS really wanted GTA 4 to boost their sales alongside Halo3 and Madden (I think). With GTA gone, MS have to relay so much on Halo 3 + all of their exclusive titles. Sony on the otherhand has great titles, but most of them are new IP and it will be difficult to gain attention from the mass.
In the end, Sony will most likely be the ones to suffer from the delay.

1. First off The episodic content was not even suppose to come out till early 2008, and its still on track for that. So first point is invalid.

2. Where is rockstar going to find the time to create content for the PS3 and 360, when they have a timetable for the 360 stuff, and they have other games coming out meaning, we wouldn't see PS3 stuff till 2009, and who cares by that point.

If the 360 lineup is so great how comes I've only ever heard Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Bioshock mentioned...

...and those games are also the familiar 360 stereotypes as well in case you haven't noticed; FPS or RPG.

The best lineup is that which tries to include a game from every genre in order to get the largest variety of players interested in the console. If you were to do this you'd find that the PS3 has a better lineup than the 360 because it has a much wider variety of genres in there to attract a wider variety of gamers. In other words, Sony don't put all their eggs in one basket.

IMO, all the 360 seems to do is pump out shooters and action games. The PS3 already has an aura of variety with the PSN games and when you tuck into this years releases that aura just gets more prominent and more well established.

I'm sorry but saying the 360 lineup is better than the PS3 lineup because it has Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Bioshock is a very short-sighted comment. It may make the lineup better for people that like those games but that certainly doesn't make the lineup better as a whole...

Because 360 is making an attempt at a broader market(compared to XB1), just not a very good one, most broad category games for 360 have been good at best. The PS3 has a better lineup of a games if looking at a broad category range. But the 360 no doubt has the PS3 beat in the FPS and RPG category this Holiday, maybe not in the future. That list Xeoset posted is ridiculous. Yes, you did post EVERY "AAA" game MS has. Seriously. The majority are: Either coming to PS3 (Ace Combat 6, Eternal Sonata, Bioshock, Splinter Cell 5, Fatal Inertia), are already coming to/are on PC (Two Worlds, Huxley among many others), are NOT 2007 titles like my list of confirmed 2007 titles (Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery, among others), or are complete and total sh** (Naruto among many others).

Here Mart, Sony's GAMES which you claim don't exist. MS has 1 average/big release per month, Sony has 2+. If anything, MS doesn't have games and this is not just killing them, but SLAUGHTERING them. GTA4 on a cheaper console with Halo 3 as a double whammy was all MS could hope for to move ahead, now it's a clean sweep for Sony.

Lair got a 9 from Play, a ridiculously low EGM score like Bomba Dragon (which also got a low 6 score from Edge). Once more reviews come in we'll see - EGM didn't even bother reviewing the final master copy, seeing as it went "gold" 2 days before the publication was RELEASED (not even 2 days before the article was printed first).

While we tout real exclusives, you Marty boy shout about a non-exclusive, coming to PS3 AAA title - Bioshock. Which will unfortunately not sell well anywhere.
