Can Sony and Microsoft Replicate Wii's Success?

Given the success Nintendo has had with the revolutionary controller for the Wii, it was really only a matter of time before Microsoft and Sony followed the same path.

kratos175044d ago

i hate to say this but i hope sony and microsoft crush nintendo (i wont hold my breath)

nintendo have done absolutely nothing with all the money they made this gen

atleast sony and MS try there absolute best trying to beat out each other and giving us gamers cutting edge games every year

while nintendo just lay their fat heads on rehashed games and party games. i want to see new innovative IP from nintendo

oh and please give us a choice to use the classic controller for gamers that hate motion controlls like myself

Canucks235044d ago

I hope move and kinect fail horribly, so that Sony and especially Microsoft can get back to what people bought their consoles for in the first place, more hardcore focused games.

tunaks15044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

"nintendo have done absolutely nothing with all the money they made this gen"
I know 2 3d mario games that are now the highest ranking games of all time means nothing.

"while nintendo just lay their fat heads on rehashed games and party games. i want to see new innovative IP from nintendo

oh and please give us a choice to use the classic controller for gamers that hate motion controlls like myself"
how in the hell do you have 4 bubbles, oh right im on N4G.

I don't think Microsoft and Sony will be able to be as successful with their motion addons, because they are only addons. Anyone remeber the Sega CD for the megadrive? I have a feeling the Kinect will out sell the Move because of a huge marketing push from MS, though I think Move is better then kinect. Sony will advertise the Move too close to the wii that casuals are not going to see any reason to drop a huge load of money to get a slightly more sensitive wiimote. Even with some hardcore backing for the move(the people who will camp outside to get one-if that even happens) there won't be a big enough install base for any long term 3rd party support. If they do succeed 3rd parties will litter the hell out of the 2 motion addons with endless amount of shovelware.

kratos175044d ago

i realise my comment was a little harsh towards nintendo but i want to see nintendo do something different instead of another mario game and my opinion shouldnt be taken seriously because after all this is a discussion website and not everyone will agree

Poseidon5044d ago

The Move will replicate wii's success, think about it, hardcore/casual titles, great advertisement (coca cola cans) and a formula that works! :) i applaud sony for their realization that accuracy/casual/hardcore can all meld into a single great device.

-Alpha5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

You do not know that for fact.

Replicating the Wii's control with more advanced technology doesn't mean the success will also replicate.

We've yet to determine the appeal this will have on gaming, core gaming, casual audiences, hardcore audiences, the industry, etc. We simply have to wait and not get ahead of ourselves. Patience, my friend.

Dragun6195044d ago

I dunno if it will be an Instant Success, maybe a success over time more like it, but if there is a demand for Wii HD then there should be a demand for PS Move.

A great idea for Sony would be to look at the hardcore games Indie Developers have made for the Wii, and see if they want to expand that idea with PS Move. That would be cool.

Nicolee5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

i got Wii and for me i dont really play it anymore so i don't think i would buy move or kinect for casual gaming,

i need to see more titles of both move and kinect really but so far i want to play Sorcery on move and nothing on kinect . i guess it all about titles that will come out .

Nintendo innovates, sony steals and microsoft tries to innovate.
HOW ON EARTH WILL THEY CRUSH Nintendo?

As long as you can produce games that constantly gain super-high ratings all over the world and people loving it, why change the formula?

You seem to be pissed off because Nintendo don`t make teen games like cod and gow and gta.
Nintendo creates good entertaining and gameplay-focused games for all ages to play.

Ps:
Seeing you have kratos as an avatar tells me that you can`t be older than 14 mentally as kratos is the greatest character ever created to turn teen boys on.
No offense to God of war as a game.

The way M$ is exposing Kinect, I would say they have a very good chance of matching Wii numbers for the rest of this gen. The fitnect gaming alone will pull huge numbers. Then you have the kids factor, which is Nintendo's secret weapon against M$ and Sony. Kids are going to love Kinect. You can cry about it on N4G all you like. But Kids are a major consumer, especially around the Holidays.

Poseidon5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

the psmove is already a success when it comes to hardcore gamers, in the sense of a whole new ground breaking in the spectrum of their realities as gamers. i think the move will follow the wiis success.

xxLuckyStrike5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

a good shot... its a new refreshing way to play games...(no controller required) Move is too similar to a Wii remote just an upgrade. New consumers win not be able to differentiate the two. My money is on Kinect.. All the casuals that have a Wii will likely choose Kinect as it will offer a different type of gaming experience.

News Flash:

Microsoft is in a real sticky situation on exactly how much to charge for Kinect. Should the A. Be greedy and over price it as usual. or B. Charge very little and get kinect in as many homes now to set up the next gen install base.

PandemicPrawn05044d ago

If they are smart they will go with your second option.

I would expect Kinect to be priced lower than the $150 placeholder as I think they would have been listening to public opinion on that. I’m going to guess around $80 to $120 USD.

On topic: I would have to agree with Greeneagle, I think that the Move is going to sell well but mostly appeal to gamers who already own the PS3. I think Kinect has a better chance of cracking the mainstream casual audience, but it is going to depend on the price of the device and the software.

Casual Kinect games should really be priced at about $30 to $40.

IRetrouk5044d ago

kinect isnt new or refreshing its an eytoy copy we have seen the games and they could all be done on eyetoy.

xxLuckyStrike5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

and I suppose you think Move is new and refreshing. At least give credit to Microsoft for going out on a limb as opposed to just copying the Wii.

Last I checked a 2d camera compared to a 3d camera isnt even close. Sure Kinect launch title games will seem similar to eyetoy. But eventually you will see games only Kinect can do.

Ya! ya! I know Sony thought of everything first right(sarcasm)!!! Kinect= eyetoy and the Wii= Move. Live= PSN.

Just rediculous!!!

IRetrouk5044d ago (Edited 5044d ago )

not at all i have my 360 right here with over 70000 gamerscore so dont try an paint me as a fanboy, at the end of the day from what i have seen of kinect it is nothing more than an eyetoy 1.5 why would i buy something that is 10 years old and alredy proven not to work that well? its laggy and the games are a joke, i dont remember mentioning move but since you brought it up, at least its been proven to work, it does what its supposed to, i wont bother listing the games that are coming out for it because then i would be really making a joke of kinect, get those goggles off and actually look at what micro is feeding you.
microsoft is hardly going out on a limb, didnt they do that when they released the 360?, you know the console that failed more than it worked, yip i have had 5 replaced, am still very sore about it but i still game on because i like the service, but to say kinect is groundbreaking or refreshing is total bull and you know it.

frankymv5044d ago

I think it will be tough going for MS and Sony in the motion space.

SeanRL5044d ago

What I don't like is that a lot of wii owners instantly think that the ps move is a copy of the wii-mote when they see it even though Sony has been working on motion controls for longer and the ps move is more accurate.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow1d 17h ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo18221h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie11h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

RNTody1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno23h ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno21h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

6h ago
fsfsxii7h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno6h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
